Its more likely Naylor wrote several different plots for the movie considering he had a decade of free time to screenwrite, the Cat thing sounds like a completely different plot from the Homo sapienoid one he probably used for The Beginning.

Might be up to personal preference but one thing I like about the novels is they take the setting and situation pretty seriously, in the show it seems like a fun adventure most of the time but I don’t think I’d describe anything in the books as cozy at any point.

The highlight is the entire exchange between the Dwarfers and Peter Pettigrew for me, otherwise I’d put Holoship, Inquisitor (especially plot wise) and Quarantine over it (still a good episode anyway, 5 is my favorite series).

I never got the hype for Back to Reality. Its a good episode, but I don’t think I’d have it in my top 10.

I love the escape from the game in BTL. Only weak part of the novel for me is the Marooned adaption only because I don’t think it works in print form and they don’t add anything to it.

BTL has what, a bit of Marooned, pool with planets, and then most of Polymorph is tacked on the end.

Keep in mind the pool with planets in BTL came before White Hole, which adapted that chunk from the novel. BTL I think has the most original content of the novels, possibly rivaled by Last Human.

Richard unofficially served that role on The Promised Land with pushing for the contribution of the Moonlight scene I believe, he may have given his scripts a readthrough on XI / XII too. Funnily enough just for that contribution, Richard might’ve actually been Doug’s best script editor.

In fairness, we do seem to forget Marshall is the co-writer of this too, so he’ll be bringing his own creative twists and energy that we have never seen done in Red Dwarf before, that opens a lot of potential creative avenues and directions entirely new to the franchise. Also maybe Asclepius is a very big Whoops Apocalypse fan.

Skipper has another Dave Dwarfian quirk I really hate where Kryten makes sure to point out “the skipper does require recharge time between skips” and this gets referenced once and promptly forgotten about immediately for the montage gags. Someone on the Discord said a lot of Dave era scripts feel like they’re one draft away from completion and this is one instance where I think that sentiment applies, I wonder if anyone ever proofread Naylor’s scripts before he’d submit them.

I have always liked the “After all, that’s how it all started” ending. Its funny with the Doctor gets the presidency again when they do absolutely nothing with it, Colin Baker had to remind Saward about it at the beginning of Trial so he’d reference he got deposed in a throwaway line, that’s how redundant that was. Although apparently they did a Big Finish story where the Time Lords called back 5 to act as president and its really good, I haven’t listened to it though.

That’d explain it. Examining the lighting choices upon closer inspection in XI / XII is giving me a newfound appreciation for them in terms of their lighting choices, although I stand by thinking they went too far in certain places.

Oddly in this scene in M-Corp everything is lit in non-blue haze in the Science Room, much unlike most of XI /XII.

Feels more overbearing in XI / XII though, granted I don’t think Series III – V had so many corridor scenes but maybe I’m misremembering.

This seems to be just part of the studio set itself since its in XI /XII and The Promised Land, but the shadows from the lights (or in-universe from the ceiling of the corridors or something like that) overcast on top of the actors heads in scenes isn’t too appealing to me either. Just seems unnecessary, not sure the logic behind it.

I do think the Science Room benefits heavily from the XI / XII lighting, when its lit in The Promised Land it looks pretty obviously fake and like a studio set.

I don’t like it when it does the corridor fan effect in the corridors though, that I’m going to stick with it being overboard. Even practically that corridor is way too dark, its like the ship’s on low power.

I think the lighting for Moonlight scene/Starbug crashed scenes does work, though, since they’re supposed to be on low power while on the subject. I imagine if they were still using atmospheric lighting they wouldn’t have made the distinction when lighting the cockpit for the scene since they keep it pretty uniform when they stick to something.
