The jokes by themselves aren’t amazing but I always thought Chris Barrie and Mac McDonald’s chemistry played off each other really well enough to make them funny.

I know there are some examples of ‘proper swearing’ in the bubble era, and I’m no prude, but I’ve always found this a bit much. 

His delivery is too much like he is trying to make the audience laugh (his entire performance is imo) and less that he is actually calling Rimmer a twat.

Can’t say I’m a fan of retconning the Rimmer brothers to also be losers, just took away from Rimmer feeling uniquely like a failure in his family for being the only one who didn’t succeed. Although as an addendum I did like the idea proposed in that 6 deleted scene that they all went insane and were terrible captains.

anyone noticed that Lister/CC seems to be at the peak of fitness in series 7 and 8? Like relatively slim and buff looking?

For me I notice that that’s when Chris Barrie really ages from when the show started. The jump between 8 and Back to Earth isn’t jarring in terms of physical appearance for me, but comparing Barrie between 1 and 8 is pretty stark.

Just found out Verity Lambert was a producer on Creek. Between that and Davies being in an RTD show I’m pretty surprised he was never in the show itself at any point.

The War and Curator Doctors were already playing with fire (even though I thought they worked) but I really can’t get over Tennant as 14, its going to be the nadir for me.

Remastered: Series IV And V

Worst part of remastered frankly is they didn’t get around to remastering 4 to 6, I still haven’t watched them to this day because they’re too ugly and unfunny for me to do so.

Top 10 things to fix in 4-6 remastered:

1. Explain what happened at the end of Legion. How did they fix the hole in Starbug? Makes no sense and pulled me out of the episode.

2. Have a cartoon bonk sound effect play instead when crushed Kryten lands on the Psiren to make it clear I’m supposed to find it funny.

3. Instead of Lister saying “Don’t Nixon me, man” have him say “Don’t Trump me, man” because Nixon wasn’t president for a while therefore its an outdated reference that’ll scare and confuse casuals.

4. At the end of Camille, have a new CGI shot of Camille and Hector’s ship crashing into a nearby asteroid because the current ending is unfunny (I don’t know what Casablanca is and this should also be removed, but I’m realistic and foresee this being a harder task so this ending should make matters easier to resolve)

5. In Meltdown, there are too many unrecognizable celebrities and historical figures nobody born this century will know (Stan Laurel, Noel Coward, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Abraham Lincoln, etc.), so we must CGI them out for AI recreations of modern stars. I leave the new choices to the whims of the director.

6. With the advent of CGI and visual effects since the episode’s airing, now will be a great time to cut a good 5 minute chunk out of Back to Reality and insert an epic space battle when Lister views the AR game of the other Red Dwarf crew. This is simply cooler, worth the expense, and improves a pretty dismal and dated episode.

7. Cut out Mr Flibble he’s not funny, make him a Mr Blobby hand puppet instead because I know what that is which makes it funny.

8. In Rimmerworld have a line that explains how the Rimmers procreate.

9. For Gunmen of the Apocalypse redo the menu screens to match Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter complete with CGI models of the characters they can select because the current ones match old games that nobody born in century has played or can be bothered to emulate.

10. And finally, for Out of Time, instead of the future Dwarf crew dining with the Hitlers say they went to Epstein’s Island.

I know this is in reference to Back to Earth, but this also happened in the Gatwa Episode Lux, which I don’t know if you’ve seen and know about. 

I don’t know how that part wasn’t universally reviled.

No, you don’t get it, the remastered episode of The End exists in the same universe as that alternate universe in Skipper where Rimmer is still holding the time device despite being pre-radiation leak and soft light. Easy mistake.

I liked the Skutters running in the foreground, the comedic plate shattering sound when Rimmer runs offscreen, and the ending to Polymorph finally being explained because the original didn’t do that and that perturbed and frightened me.

Would be good if Rimmer accidentally dropped the quantum rod and caused another ship-destroying calamity.

Wasn’t the quantum rod supposed to be a series-long story arc or something stemming from Rimmer fucking with it in the first place? I thought I heard that, don’t know.

Book came in today. Sadly it is just the strips, none of the promotional material from the time or interviews. For that purpose it’s okay, I can read the writing well enough even though it’s been condensed on the page. I haven’t found any printing errors so far but maybe that’ll change as I go through the book. Also felt like mentioning I actually cancelled this but my girlfriend noticed and reordered it for me, but because of that she got it on sale now and I saved 15 bucks so there’s that.

Is it any good as a story?

Ultimate Adventure? No, it’s for little kids, but it’s technically the only time the Daleks and Cybermen met in the Classic era (the play ran concurrently with S26). If you don’t like Colin Baker I don’t know how much you’ll enjoy this although he’s toned down a lot from his TV persona. I can put the Archive link here if it’s allowed (it’s not copyrighted but don’t know the rules).

Mr Jolly … film remaster

Now if we’re talking The Young Ones or Bottom I am in agreement. It’s usually film elements that if they’ve been ported to an inferior medium I find hard to watch. There’s a lot of Comic Strip films that suffer from that especially the first Bad News and Five Go ones. I wonder if they have film masters of those or not because they weren’t upscaled on the Severin for some reason.

Watching Jodie was easier than Gatwa because I never held Chibnall in as high esteem as I did RTD so seeing his writing ability degrade in real time was just painful.

If anyone watches NerdCubed he ranked the NuWho episodes in a tier list but I haven’t had the time to listen to it though (2 fucking hours). I just quickly skipped to the end and jaw dropped from seeing a lot of Capaldi rank lower than nearly of all Gatwa’s run unless he put the episodes he hadn’t seen at the bottom or something. Hell Bent worse than Reality War? Every opinion is valid but you have to draw a line somewhere now.

I love the look of old film now (even unimproved), but it used to look less defined and washed out (to me) compared to the familiar studio stuff. But it did nicely add to the grotty feel of some stuff like Blackadder 1 village scenes and Rik & Ade’s Comic Strip films compared to Bottom.

I couldn’t watch Mr Jolly until the film remaster they did for the Blu ray a few years back, the video of it looks so washed out without it and ruins some bits like being unable to read Ade’s head.
