I read that Doctor Who was going to be cancelled after the Chibnall era with an open-ended, cut-to-black regeneration. The only future for the show was the Tennant 60th specials apparently.

Cutting to black from a regeneration? Open-ended? What were they thinking? Obviously they should’ve ended on a regeneration into Dan Lewis.

The Daemons was my favourite Pertwee story (I don’t really like him), but it’s not as good as Quatermass and the Pit.

Nearly thought for a moment you were referring to the VNA and got confused.

I’m really not big into the Davison era even though I like his Doctor and Tegan is one of my favorite Classic companions, I don’t think he got good or memorable stories and S20 might be my least favorite Classic Who season (between that or S17). I do like most of S21 though and Earthshock is a classic.

Day of the Daleks isn’t a Dalek story, Planet of the Daleks is semi-decent reheated leftovers, Death to the Daleks is insipid and Destiny of the Daleks is shoddy but sort of alright really I guess maybe.

I like all the Pertwee era Dalek stories for some reason, can’t entirely explain why. Destiny is just dreadful though. It’s harder to excuse a shoddy Davros than shoddy Daleks.

A lot of Fifth Doctor stories are complete bores worst one is Arc of Infinity. If it weren’t for S21 he’d have the worst stories in Classic Who for me hands down.

Speaking of lost Doctor Who stuff anyone remember this or played it? I remember screwing around with it during Season 7B’s airing. Its sad how corny little stuff like this especially during the Smith era I took for granted especially these days when Doctor Who outside the show is nonexistent.

No point arguing over the semantics of it when this becomes redundant by Doctor Who (2030 – 2046) which canonizes the Fugitive Doctor as the Curator’s 8th incarnation after having split from 14 who goes on to father Susan.

Gatwa has been superb in my opinion, just a shame he’s been shackled to a very wonky era for the show.

Gatwa himself I actually like a lot, he’s great in episodes that let him be great its just there hasn’t been a Doctor who consistently was handed dreadful episodes in successive order in NuWho (I’d argue the entire show but that’s probably more debatable). Series 2 is almost completely bad imo, Series 1 had good ones like Dot and Bubble and Rogue but otherwise he was given dirt and asked to make a diamond out of it. Its really unfortunate because Wild Blue Wonder is the only episode I’d say was a bonified classic of RTD2 and they gave that one to Tennant instead which is just insulting to me.

What did Chibnall do that went back on when the Fugitive Doctor fits in the Doctor’s timeline? From what I remember, she was introduced, then we got the Timeless Child revelation that seemed to neatly explain that she fits in pre-Hartnell. (Well, except for the minor inconvenient detail that her TARDIS was already a police box.)
After that, what did Chibnall do to change about her placement?

Its less in the show and more outside of it mudding the waters due to the backlash where Chibnall says “well maybe she is maybe she isn’t”. Within the show itself its also unclear I don’t *think* they definitively say within The Timeless Children itself where she is (I’m going to be honest with you, I haven’t watched it in years because I don’t want to) and you later have the Fugitive popping up between, iirc, Tennant and Gatwa for no logical reason in the seemingly chronological Doctors list that pops up in The Reality War. There’s also the dumb Shalka Doctor cameo we had in whatever episode that was.

I haven’t seen the later Chibnall era, but this doesn’t sound much different from Tom Baker’s museum curator Doctor or the “Merlin” Doctor referenced in Battlefield.

Merlin was a one-off mention and hardly comparable to Fugitive who pops up recurringly in several episodes, while the curator Doctor is intentionally an end-of-life thing you can presume happens after the Doctor “retires”.

I hate how fucked up Doctor lineups are now. Tennant appears twice on all of them which looks ridiculous, even more so to casual observers. And you have to have Jo Martin, which means you have to have John Hurt. It was always going to get crowded, but it’s rather silly.

People gnash their teeth about Jodie Whittaker til the cows come home but I still feel she was the last true Doctor or the last one that felt like all the others that came before her. After that you got 14 which reeks of cynicism to me, 15 who got delegitimized out of the gate with the equally cynical bigeneration nonsense, and Fugitive who never got anything to do besides appear randomly on the odd occasion whereas War at least had proper buildup and an entire special to build his myths with. We still don’t know where she is in the lineup because Chibnall ducked out of making her pre-Hartnell when everyone took up arms over it. And now we have a Doctor who may or may not be the Doctor. Just a travesty.

Possibly, but I don’t think RTD had anyone, be it at the BBC or Disney, giving him demands or attempting to reign him in like that during his second tenure so it was most likely his doing if I were to hazard a guess.

The lying about the scripts is absolutely horrendous

He may possibly be lying about not having written a script, Murray Gold said just recently that there were multiple scripts/stories on the go depending on circumstances/availability and some people think RTD feels scorned and is lying now, but wasn’t previously. Maybe we’ll find out eventually and maybe we won’t

Alternatively RTD could’ve merely completed an outline or a rough draft which he might not consider a “proper” script, and Murray Gold was just speaking broadly since he’s a composer and probably isn’t privy to the difference. That or RTD has lost it and is a compulsive liar, which not ruling out either.

It was a stupid idea to have a 3-4 series plan when you only had 2 series guaranteed. And just the plans for those 2 series were fucked up.

Wasn’t it 3 seasons guaranteed by Disney and RTD made the last season into the Sea Devils spin-off instead of another Doctor Who because he was confident he’d get it renewed for one anyway? Or did I pick up an internet rumor and take it as fact?

Susan in Interstellar Song Contest will never be topped for biggest waste of potential in Doctor Who history. Surely they knew she wasn’t even going to be in the finale when they wrote that?

I’m mainly not too upset about it because a) Doctor Who’s writing has gotten so bad its honestly better for it be dead then continue on embarrassing itself and b) some of my favorite Doctor Who stories comes from the Wilderness era, the Eighth Doctor is my second favorite Doctor and all his stuff is concentrated to books and Big Finish so I don’t even really see it as the end of Doctor Who for it to not be on TV anymore

RTD is either lying and he did write several scripts that were all rejected or he’s just casually admitting he committed fraud and never wrote anything ever. What a way to go out.

The new showrunner (considering when the show comes back could possibly be in the single digit age bracket as we speak) should ideally be a fan. I always liked that a lot of the NuWho writers like RTD, Moffat, Cornell, etc. were writers for VNAs so they were able to experiment a bit and get more comfortable with the Doctor Who world.

1) They reunite Tennant and Piper for an anniversary type thing, and they join at the end, creating the new Doctor.

This would have been RTD’s Christmas special if it actually ever existed I bet.

2) They just ignore it until the show is successful again, at which point there will be some throwaway line or story that wraps it up. 

If I were showrunner I’d just have Rose’s face morph into another companion’s and into another’s until it forms into the actual actor that’ll play the Doctor. Like it was going through a rolodex of memories or some nonsense. Although realistically they’re absolutely ignoring this ever happened.

I don’t mind the modern tech so much if only because Dave Red Dwarf just feels so much like a different show to me from the original where it would feel out of place, which already felt like different shows stitched together at times between seasons.

Reading about all the lazily returning adversaries in RTD2 puts me off those more than quality concerns.

Funny thing is of Gatwa’s 17 stories I think only 6 of them have returning villains as the core threat, but they came around for the finales and the plot arcs were built around them so their prominence is elevated a lot (also doesn’t help they were bad every single time).
