Who took the picture of young-Rimmer’s dorm room that he uses to go back in time, in Timeslides? And how is adult-Rmmer in possession of it in the future?

The more I think about this the more it bothers me.

I somehow never noticed until just now that this same nonsense concept is in a Star Trek episode, but played straight.  (They leave it at “somehow,” obviously).
    ‘Quarantine’ broadcast: 12.03.92
    ‘Rivals’ broadcast: 03.01.94

They mentioned (later, I think) it was making more subatomic particles spin in one way than the other, thus apparently changing probability.

That was a traceable effect that led them to the source rather than the cause itself, as far as I understand. It was magic alien technology that they show a bizarre lack of interest in studying and harnessing, just shoot it so O’Brien & Bashir can get back to their space squash.

Oh yes, I remember now.  Nobody knew how it worked because the guy just replicated (and enlarged, in some cases) the one he’d originally been given.

With regard to Kryten’s head, I can confirm it is a monstrously better looking effect if you snip the roughly two frames of dummy head they inexplicably kept in. I almost have to feel like it’s on purpose even though that’s unlikely for the show to do, just because it’s so ludicrously easy to fix. Or maybe something went hideously wrong.

That sounds more like Red Dwarf obviously…

Rimmer’s parents, his mum and fake dad (not Dungo/Dougie), what are their names?

At least one of them is probably called Frank.

His stand-in wife-mother in the BTL novel was called Helen. That doesn’t really help, but it shows that I’m operating on an advanced level.

Where does Kryten get his human outfit from in DNA?

Are these some badly combined Cat hand-me-downs, building on his collection from the crap ear-ring he palmed off on him in The Last Day perhaps?

Are they just random clothes he’s claimed from what has been left on board ship?

Is it something he created himself based on his bizarre concept of what would make a good “humanoid” outfit?

I read somewhere that it was supposed to be an amalgamation of sorts of his crew mates outfits

Yeah I can see the logic in that, in terms of Kryten’s psychology at least – not sure I can see much of the others style in what he’s cobbled toghether though!

Why does Lister go to the lengths of having a meal with some class by raiding various medical equipment, including from the – probably quite sizeable – bovine insemination department, rather than just taking some fancy cutlery from the officers’ or captain’s private dining rooms?

    He thinks he’s Heston Blumenthal.

I’ve always been fond of that “sketch,” but it feels more like a Grant Naylor radio sketch about a scrounging, desensitised medical student repulsing his flatmate/date than very Red Dwarf.

You’ve always got the backup excuses of “he’s gone a bit mad what with being alone in deep space with some pretty shit company” and the related “he deliberately does shit to wind people up as it keeps him going”.

Plus y’know it’s Lister, LOL wot a slob, he luvs curry!!! etc.

They repeated Polymorph on Dave last night, and something that’s sort of bugged me for years is the fact that Lister doesn’t question the fact that he suddenly has an extra kebab on his plate, when he’s just stated “one kebab for me”.

I’d say at that point Lister’s thoughts were 5% “wait, didn’t I only get 1 kebab? Maybe I spaced out for a second there and actually got 2” and 95% “mmmm kebab”.

That gave me the mental image of the Homer Simpson drooling gif but photoshopped with Lister’s face.

The conversation in the dark observation thread about Me2 got me thinking.

Rimmer 2 says ‘well, he did warn you’ as soon as he’s booted up, suggesting he had the memories of Rimmer 1 right up until being booted up, however the whole plot of the Me2 is about how they are different as he hasn’t changed over the last few months like Rimmer 1 has due to his getting closer to Lister. So which was it?

Ah yes, I remember this being a discussion point in Refresh for the Memory.

It wasn’t actually made explicit in the episode (unlike in Infinity) that the 2 Rimmers had different memories. So either they don’t, and it was the psychological impact of knowing that he wasn’t the original that made Rimmer2 behave differently, or they don’t, and Rimmer2 was put into a kind of virtual waiting room where he was caught up with the situation before he was fully switched on.

Why the fuck was Bird Man in The Hole? He doesn’t even remotely fit with the depiction of the other prisoners, let alone one bad enough to end up in isolation.

Don’t let his sweet and confused demeanor fool you. “Birdman” is an uncontrollably violent individual.

Wouldn’t more RD over the next decade or two become more like the later seasons of Dad’s Army and Last of the Summer Wine?

Not unless I missed the seasons of Dad’s Army and Last Of The Summer Wine that were set in deep space, three million years into the future.

    #289476

I know. I’m just thinking of Lucile Ball’s failed comeback in 1986. In her middle seventies trying to do the same “Lucy stuff” she did in her early forties.

If you mean more formulaic, catchphrase based and lacking the emotional content of the early series, then no, we had that in series 6.

I think Only Fools and Horses is possibly a better comparison, occasional specials that never quite hit the peak comedically, but have character moments that make them worthwhile.

Obviously I’m happy in my world where OFAH ended in 1996.

Why didn’t the skutters clean up the dead crew after the accident, rather than leave them all lying around for Lister to eat? They had 3 million years to do it in!

As per “keep an eye on that lamb”, their AI is very literal in its interpretation of duties. Perhaps without an actual crew member to give them the instruction, it simply didn’t occur to them to do it.

My head canon is they swept them all up and then deposited them in neat piles where they died for cataloguing/ CSI reasons.

I suppose you could say “well why didn’t they stop Lister before he ate them” but Holly was in the middle of informing him, probably should have got the “they’re those white powder mounds” in faily quickly after telling him they’d died though.

I’ve always wondered, did the drive plate accident vaporise their bodies and turn them into piles of dust, or did they just decompose into such after three million years?

There’s a conservation of mass issue going on, unless the ashes are incredibly dense and filling.

If Give & Take is any indication, he probably tricked him into it.

Or he snuck up on him and chloroformed him, as he did to himself in G&T

Rimmer’s death tribute video does seem to suggest they had enough time to utter last words, which would lead me towards them being overwhelmed by acute radiation poisoning, rather than being vaporized in the moment.  But of course, it also suggests Rimmer and Hollister got blown to opposite sides of the drive room when their respective piles of pathway grit are right next to each other, so who really knows.

Me2 is basically Series 1.5 so it’s a totally different continuity.
