The title says it all. What opinions do you have about Red Dwarf that no-one else seems to agree on?

For me, it’s that VIII is my second favourite series (behind V) and that I prefer Chloë over Claire as Kochanski (this may be partially influenced by the fact that I’ve met Chloë).

    And please, no arguing.

Zachary Smith (from Lost in Space) is a better Rimmer than Rimmer

I think Pete Part 1 might technically be the worst episode of Red Dwarf, even more than Part 2, but it’s so hilariously shit that I’d still rather watch it than nearly all of VIII, even if it’s hatewatching.

Agreed. They’re both shit, but Pete Part 1 isn’t overtly sexist and transphobic. Well, it’s probably a bit of at least one of those, I’ve not watched it in a while, but definitely less so.

Yeah Krytie TV and Timewave are the all-time lows for me.

Although if I was compiling a SIX OF THE WORST vhs boxset then Pete would definitely account for a third of it too.

I like the time wand and some of the captain’s office stuff, the morse code bit, the first scene with the dinosaur. Honestly Pete doesn’t lose me until a little while into part 2 when the story gives up.

Yeah, count me as part of the “Krytie TV is the nadir” gang. Pete is inexcusably terrible, but it isn’t morally reprehensible. Although to defend Krytie TV just a little, I’m pretty sure the transphobia was just the leftover “Kryten is wrongly categorised as a woman” set up from Back in the Red. In which case Pete is guilty of that too because of the Archie stuff.

Honestly Pete doesn’t lose me until a little while into part 2 when the story gives up.

To me the story gave up as soon as “as punishment, I sentence you to play a basketball game” happened.

But I guess one major issue with Pete is that Lister and Rimmer barely have a plot at all. They’re mostly just fucking around until they can provide a convoluted way for the time wand to be aimed at a sparrow. They could have achieved that plot development just by making Birdman a quirky prisoner in the canteen and having Cat mess around with the wand and zap Pete by accident.

I’ll defend basically anything but I draw the line at that shite. Maybe they didn’t realise it would be so piss poor until they filmed it and by that point they couldn’t edit it out. But my God is it shite. Could have been done with editing in Series IV and I can imagine it being vaguely funny, but they likely wanted it all acted out for the audience they just got back.

The thing is, you could still take that performance and edit it to do the joke that way. Going with the ‘as live’ performance is just a baffling decision all round.

I keep telling you, I am in the process of watching through the entire show with a friend and we are currently in Series VIII. He described Krytie TV and Pete Part 1 as “asinine” but hasn’t begged to skip ahead so I’m committed to this. He doesn’t seem to dislike them as much as we do but definitely thinks we’re in the low point of the show so far. I’ve promised greener pastures in future series.

I’ve brought up VIII several times recently because every time I watch part of it with him I complain in the server about it. Except for Cassandra, where the Stockholm Syndrome of sitting through so much middle Dwarf led me to really enjoy it up until the point Rimmer gets all sex-pesty and Kryten figures it out. It’s not a great episode by any stretch but it at least resembles the show we’d been watching before VIII.

I watch all of series VIII on all my watch-throughs but I never ever watch Timewave anymore and I probably will never watch it again having probably seen in maybe 5 or 6 times before.

There’s barely a gag or even a moment where I smirk – and that’s not going into how tone-deaf and offensive it is.

Pete, both parts, have been known to make me give a little chuckle, if only for a moment. I watch the whole series for completeness when I watch through.

    But not Timewave. Timewave doesn’t count. It’s just…unrecognisable. I can’t and I won’t.

More of a mundane observation than unpopular opinion, but it’s so weird seeing Rimmer in a grey T-shirt after years of that blue tunic.

I think that’s what it’s getting at. They don’t know why they’ve got a Red Dwarf DVD order in their history that they didn’t buy (or don’t remember buying) and are correctly blaming the product itself.

Here’s a ripscorcher of an unpopular opinion.

Every single episode in series 8 outranks every single Series 12 episode (with the exception of Cured which is great)

Only completionism. I do a watch through of all Red Dwarf episodes now and again and Timewave was a Red Dwarf episode. So I’d just omit to skip it and just sit through it. After a few times, enough was enough.

There are no bad Red Dwarf episodes, all are on a scale somewhere between passable and outstanding

    …except Timewave, which doesn’t count

Mr Rat is especially unfunny. Sorry but that’s just how it is. Skipper as an episode is pretty dire. It’s like one of those filler Simpsons episodes where it’s just a clip show or the “Simpsons Spin-Off” thing.
