I’d like to file a complaint. The American VHS has the episodes in the correct broadcast order but retains the UK tape order on the box. I just wanted to watch Confidence & Paranoia on VHS in 2025 at 1:40 AM like the obviously stable and functioning woman I am and here I am watching Waiting for God. The play button doesn’t work on the remote anymore and I’m too lazy to get up so this is my reality now.

You also want some stuff at the beginning of the episode before that happens, a purpose Hogey serves as well. Debate all you want how good those opening bits are, but I fail to see how they’re inherently structurally unnecessary.

because Doug has actually found meaningful ways for Holly to contribute. In the Promised Land, he outwits the crew, then saves their lives and also blows up a whole moon. That’s pretty badass.

I don’t think you could find a way to incorporate Holly this heavily into every story, though.

The bunkroom scenes in Samsara are some of my favourites. “I’m dead, how unlucky is that?!” “You’re dead but you’re still talking!”

I absolutely love the opening scene of Samsara. It’s one of the few times Doug solo writes a Rimmer / Lister banter convo that feels truly on point to me.

I feel like all the overplaying people criticize Chris for in the Dave era is pretty much absent in Back to Earth and only starts in X.

The only context you need from VIII can be gained from watching the last three minutes of Only the Good and then waiting ten years to continue.

They would 10,000% be deepfaking that, not using CGI, which would be infinitely cheaper. And I’m pretty sure money was never mentioned in relation to that specifically, just in a broader “there’s no money in television in 2025” kind of way.

Mundane observation (unrelated to those currently under discussion): Lister’s anti-war crusade in Meltdown about how the wax droids are people with independent thought that deserve to live is slightly undermined by just two episodes earlier when he’s pretty unrepentant about murdering the Talkie Toaster. 

To be fair, in the shooting order he would’ve been driven insane by Talkie after Waxworld happened.

I’ve been showing Dave Dwarf to a friend of mine who only saw the BBC era and it’s still slightly jarring to me just how good the Cat is in Series X compared to VII / VIII.

Marooned is cool, but I do think it’s slightly overrated. I wish there was some kind of conflict going on there beyond the chest/guitar, or that the anecdotes were more personal. It feels more like an extended sketch than a fully formed story. 

That’s a fair criticism. I just think it’s really, really funny throughout.

I’m 100% certain I would have already said this in the thread, possibly two or three times, but on my original Genesis I could not for the life of me beat the Wing Fortress boss. If I made it through the rest of the level at all, I always arrived at that boss on my last couple lives and never had enough tries to trial-and-error my way through.

Bodyswap has Chris and Craig do physical impressions of each other, and they’re both really cute. Chris is like a kid in Lister’s clothes, and Craig hams it up as Rimmer. 

Bodyswap is the best episode of Series III that isn’t Marooned. Fight me.

Bodyswap is a special case where I think the characterisation of Rimmer is entirely off.

To be fair, there’s HEAVY precedent for Rimmer going this insane and stealing Lister’s body. It’s just that it’s in Bodysnatcher.

I think Bodyswap might only feel off to you because they don’t make a big enough deal out of how miserable Rimmer is being a hologram in the earlier part of the episode. They tell you about it but they don’t show it so much. I guess. It never felt off to me but I’ve been watching these episodes for the best part of two decades at this point so everything in them feels “in character” to me.
