It’s not that meta, but it is a little bit. May 3, 2026 at 8:41 pm in reply to: Mundane observation dome #319604 MoonlightParticipant Wondering how much Gunmen is riffing Westworld (1973) in particular after this line. For a fun extra connection, the guy in the middle is Richard Benjamin, who starred as Quark in the short-lived late 70s sci-fi comedy series Quark which bears a passing resemblance to Red Dwarf but is more a parody of Star Trek (and was created by one of the creators of Get Smart, a popular 60s spy parody that Mel Brooks worked on). It features a character called The Head who is a disembodied head on a screen. May 3, 2026 at 8:10 pm in reply to: Jokes you don't/didn't get #319598 MoonlightParticipant I’m not quite sure why this line gets a laugh. This is an extremely common alternate history premise. Would you get a laugh if it was Hitler winning WWII? I don’t get it. May 3, 2026 at 7:04 pm in reply to: Squiffy Kryten meets Chris Barrie #319589 MoonlightParticipant I kind of love the way that mask looks. It’s almost like a cartoon caricature of Kryten in live action. May 3, 2026 at 5:46 am in reply to: Mundane observation dome #319564 MoonlightParticipant Robots drinking oil like a beverage is such a stock sci-fi comedy trope that I’m kind of shocked we made it to Series 12 before it came up with Kryten. This game is older than Sonic 1 was when it came out. It is the old games. Why let XII sit around unfinished for a year and then call everybody back to finish it instead of just doing it alongside XI? Doubly so because a lot of the weird music choices in XI / XII (spamming the same music cue or recycling old ones where new ones were composed) make absolutely no goddamn sense to me unless they’re temp edits that never got finished. If you were going to just recycle old transitional cues why wouldn’t you make any attempt to vary them, and bookend scenes with the same one on both sides? Also, XI uses markedly more of Howard’s new music than XII does, which is very odd. April 28, 2026 at 6:37 pm in reply to: Doug had updated his Twitter #319317 MoonlightParticipant to say nothing of the copious editing errors and occasional staging malfunctions like the Twentica ceiling XI/XII have a lot of weird issues that suggest they were rushed in post, and I suspect that ceiling was meant to be replaced with a sky in the same way all that obvious temp music (especially in XII) was meant to replaced with Howard’s score. April 25, 2026 at 7:34 pm in reply to: DwarfCasts and feeling old #319208 MoonlightParticipant Me wrestling with him largely having valid criticisms of the Dave era that even as a fan of those episodes I agree with, but then preferring Series VIII which is almost always worse. April 25, 2026 at 1:02 am in reply to: Smugle or Strugle? – Dispatches From Smegle #319191 MoonlightParticipant #RedDwarf #Smegle 25/04/2026 Demons & Angels (blind guess), Polymorph (maybe it’s the bit where it’s on the floor? It’s clearly not but I have no idea) April 25, 2026 at 12:33 am in reply to: Mundane observation dome #319189 MoonlightParticipant Clearly, he was. April 24, 2026 at 10:10 pm in reply to: Doug had updated his Twitter #319185 MoonlightParticipant My personal suspicion is that the pressure began to get to Rob, and he either couldnβt or wouldnβt admit that he was procrastinating. Doug seems to handle the pressure of making the show given he didn’t flee the country during the production of Series X. BUT HOW DOES HE HAVE TWO APPENDIXES April 23, 2026 at 5:36 am in reply to: Misunderstandings from my childhood #319094 MoonlightParticipant Subsequent references to the song seem to favor the idea that he hates it. April 22, 2026 at 8:37 pm in reply to: Your Red Dwarf Art #319076 MoonlightParticipant Iβm sorry Podey, you now need to finish that kids book so I can buy copies for my army of nephews and one niece. April 22, 2026 at 3:33 am in reply to: Misunderstandings from my childhood #318989 MoonlightParticipant First seeing it as an 11 year old American girl, I was never confused by anything on Red Dwarf. No reference passed me by. Except offside. I know it’s a soccer thing and I literally work a second job at a soccer field during games, but I still don’t know what it means. Nobody tell me. April 22, 2026 at 3:28 am in reply to: Smugle or Strugle? – Dispatches From Smegle #318988 MoonlightParticipant #RedDwarf #Smegle 22/04/2026 Beyond a Joke (I was banking on that green blob being Able during the red alert) April 22, 2026 at 1:45 am in reply to: Your Unpopular Red Dwarf Opinions #318986 MoonlightParticipant After all, Series 1 and Series 2 also have many differences, but you could easily feel like they are more similar to eachother than Series 3. I would make the argument that Series 2 and 3 are a lot more similar than a massive aesthetic difference makes it seem on the surface. There is a lot of really wacky stuff in Series 2 that doesn’t feel in keeping with Series 1 but would be at home in 3. Better Than Life, Stasis Leak and especially Parallel Universe all come to mind to varying degrees. Meanwhile, episodes like Thanks for the Memory and Queeg feel more like an evolved, refined Series 1. Not sure where to place Kryten on this spectrum. My main point is that I feel like Series 2 would seem like a much cleaner half-step between 1 and 3 if the latter didn’t look and sound like a different show. April 22, 2026 at 12:41 am in reply to: Chris Barrie has updated his website #318985 MoonlightParticipant Another awesome thing from America, the best country in the universe. (I think these kinds of train crashes were staged occasionally into the 30s but I’m pretty sure that’s the specific one I was thinking of.) April 21, 2026 at 2:50 am in reply to: Smugle or Strugle? – Dispatches From Smegle #318947 MoonlightParticipant #RedDwarf #Smegle 21/04/2026 Holoship, Terrorform I was reading it as the Starbug midsection. April 21, 2026 at 2:46 am in reply to: Your Unpopular Red Dwarf Opinions #318946 MoonlightParticipant I concur. Series 6 is no different from 5; a series of episodic adventures. By those standards basically every series is no different from any other. There is a fairly significant difference in the writing between V and VI and I don’t see how anyone could argue there isn’t. April 21, 2026 at 12:57 am in reply to: Did somebody turn over two pages at once?! #318942 MoonlightParticipant It’s not always strange. In fact, I distinctly remember last June we tried talking about Series VIII. And we didn’t like it. But then Dave swarmed in with the Smegadrive memes and we just yummed it up. April 20, 2026 at 10:17 pm in reply to: Your Unpopular Red Dwarf Opinions #318933 MoonlightParticipant I like Holoship and The Inquisitor more than Back to Reality. April 20, 2026 at 6:21 am in reply to: Your Unpopular Red Dwarf Opinions #318884 MoonlightParticipant Justice is pretty high up for me. April 20, 2026 at 1:48 am in reply to: Chris Barrie has updated his website #318881 MoonlightParticipant The joke was that Moonlight was exaggerating how bad passenger rail is in the US by pretending that sheβd never even encountered it. I don’t think I’ve ever used passenger rail in my life besides the DC Metro. And I guess when I was 4 I got to ride that train done up like Thomas the Tank Engine. April 20, 2026 at 12:50 am in reply to: Your Unpopular Red Dwarf Opinions #318879 MoonlightParticipant Quinn, explaining why VI is better than V by listing all the reasons why I like V better than VI. That’s what Your Unpopular Red Dwarf Opinions is all about, Charlie Brown. April 19, 2026 at 4:53 am in reply to: Chris Barrie has updated his website #318827 MoonlightParticipant I think the last time America did anything with trains we were crashing them into each other in the 30s as spectator events that killed many onlookers. April 19, 2026 at 4:51 am in reply to: Red Dwarf frames with threatening auras #318826 MoonlightParticipant I also need a Frinciac for King of the Hill. I have good news. There is one as of very recently. April 19, 2026 at 2:38 am in reply to: AI frames with Red Dwarf auras #318823 MoonlightParticipant That exchange is like 90% of my interactions with other people.
