Westworld is sort of a meta western where everyone is going through the motions of a traditional American western film as a theme park attraction. It’s not that meta, but it is a little bit.

Wondering how much Gunmen is riffing Westworld (1973) in particular after this line.

For a fun extra connection, the guy in the middle is Richard Benjamin, who starred as Quark in the short-lived late 70s sci-fi comedy series Quark which bears a passing resemblance to Red Dwarf but is more a parody of Star Trek (and was created by one of the creators of Get Smart, a popular 60s spy parody that Mel Brooks worked on). It features a character called The Head who is a disembodied head on a screen.

I’m not quite sure why this line gets a laugh. This is an extremely common alternate history premise. Would you get a laugh if it was Hitler winning WWII? I don’t get it.

I kind of love the way that mask looks. It’s almost like a cartoon caricature of Kryten in live action.

Robots drinking oil like a beverage is such a stock sci-fi comedy trope that I’m kind of shocked we made it to Series 12 before it came up with Kryten.

I recently slogged through VIII in a complete series watchthrough and basically any time Norman pops up after Back in the Red I’m like “Oh, right, Holly’s in this.”

I suspect that they were forced to lock both series for broadcast at the same time. Why let XII sit around unfinished for a year and then call everybody back to finish it instead of just doing it alongside XI?

Doubly so because a lot of the weird music choices in XI / XII (spamming the same music cue or recycling old ones where new ones were composed) make absolutely no goddamn sense to me unless they’re temp edits that never got finished. If you were going to just recycle old transitional cues why wouldn’t you make any attempt to vary them, and bookend scenes with the same one on both sides?

Also, XI uses markedly more of Howard’s new music than XII does, which is very odd.

to say nothing of the copious editing errors and occasional staging malfunctions like the Twentica ceiling

XI/XII have a lot of weird issues that suggest they were rushed in post, and I suspect that ceiling was meant to be replaced with a sky in the same way all that obvious temp music (especially in XII) was meant to replaced with Howard’s score.

Me wrestling with him largely having valid criticisms of the Dave era that even as a fan of those episodes I agree with, but then preferring Series VIII which is almost always worse.

My personal suspicion is that the pressure began to get to Rob, and he either couldn’t or wouldn’t admit that he was procrastinating.

Doug seems to handle the pressure of making the show given he didn’t flee the country during the production of Series X.

First seeing it as an 11 year old American girl, I was never confused by anything on Red Dwarf. No reference passed me by. Except offside. I know it’s a soccer thing and I literally work a second job at a soccer field during games, but I still don’t know what it means.

After all, Series 1 and Series 2 also have many differences, but you could easily feel like they are more similar to eachother than Series 3.

I would make the argument that Series 2 and 3 are a lot more similar than a massive aesthetic difference makes it seem on the surface. There is a lot of really wacky stuff in Series 2 that doesn’t feel in keeping with Series 1 but would be at home in 3. Better Than Life, Stasis Leak and especially Parallel Universe all come to mind to varying degrees. Meanwhile, episodes like Thanks for the Memory and Queeg feel more like an evolved, refined Series 1.

Not sure where to place Kryten on this spectrum.

My main point is that I feel like Series 2 would seem like a much cleaner half-step between 1 and 3 if the latter didn’t look and sound like a different show.

Another awesome thing from America, the best country in the universe.

(I think these kinds of train crashes were staged occasionally into the 30s but I’m pretty sure that’s the specific one I was thinking of.)

I concur. Series 6 is no different from 5; a series of episodic adventures.

By those standards basically every series is no different from any other. There is a fairly significant difference in the writing between V and VI and I don’t see how anyone could argue there isn’t.

It’s not always strange. In fact, I distinctly remember last June we tried talking about Series VIII. And we didn’t like it. But then Dave swarmed in with the Smegadrive memes and we just yummed it up.

The joke was that Moonlight was exaggerating how bad passenger rail is in the US by pretending that she’d never even encountered it.

I don’t think I’ve ever used passenger rail in my life besides the DC Metro. And I guess when I was 4 I got to ride that train done up like Thomas the Tank Engine.

I think the last time America did anything with trains we were crashing them into each other in the 30s as spectator events that killed many onlookers.
