Red Dwarf XII title sequence analysis featured image

Part of the fun whenever there's a new series of Red Dwarf is in the anticipation, trying to skip ahead and find out what's coming up next. Having previously analysed the shit out of a teaser and a trailer, it's time to round off the trilogy of impatient speculation by combing for clues in the Series XII title sequence. This is the landmark tenth title sequence of its type, with a fast-paced montage of clips from the across the series, set to the guitar-based version of the theme tune. Several of the shots within are things we've seen in previous promotional material, and a fair few are taken from Cured, but there's a lot of new material to take in here. Off we go...

The long wait is finally over. Red Dwarf is BACK and so are our LIVE DwarfCasts - in a change from Series XI, these are now happening at UKTV pace, meaning they're back to being (almost) Instant Reactions. First up, a rather under-strength G&T team was represented by Ian Symes, joined by a trio of guests: Jo Sharples of The Official Red Dwarf Fan Club fame, Helena Raymonde of hanging round car parks with Robert Llewellyn fame, and Clayton Hickman of actual fame.

Yes, the former editor of Doctor Who Magazine and writer for The Sarah Jane Adventures and Wizards vs Aliens popped round to G&T Towers to chat all things Cured. Topics included Hitler, wheelchair ramps, shooting someone in the face, UKTV Originals branding, Hitler again, Stalin's lookalikes, the quality of Series XII's special effects, the quality of Series XII's episode titles, more Hitler, and whether or not Lister should just fuck off.

It’s been 349 days since an episode of Red Dwarf was released on UKTV Play. Well, they’re back at it this morning, or possibly this afternoon, or maybe even this evening. Yes, we’re not yet sure exactly when you’ll be watching a brand new episode of your favourite show; last year, Twentica was released at just gone 9am, so we’ll be surprised if it’s not there in time for lunch. Whenever it does arrive, the link will appear in large friendly letters below this paragraph. Unless you’re reading this after it’s been released, in which case the link is there in large friendly letters below this paragraph.

THIS IS A LINK TO CURED, THANK YOU BYE.

As should be plainly obvious by now, this discussion thread is intended for people watching online ahead of the TV broadcast. Our spoiler policy dictates that if you want to talk about Cured before 9pm next Thursday, you have to do so within a thread that bears the teal banner above. If you’ve not watched the episode yet, you’re strongly advised not to read the comments on this post for now, as it’ll be a spoilery free-for-all the very second the episode drops.

But do catch up before our first LIVE Instant Reaction DwarfCast of the series, which starts at 9pm on Friday. The link will appear on here, on our Twitter feed and our Spreaker page at 8:40pm, ready for you to listen and chat along live. We’d really love to hear from you on the night, as the live chat via Spreaker was a real highlight last year. If you can’t join us, the download version will be here on Saturday, and in the meantime, please use this thread for all your thoughts, opinions and theories on the series opener.

With just ONE DAY TO GO until Red Dwarf XII is unleashed to the world on UKTV Play, Dave have posted a two minute preview clip from Cured.

Personally, I’m not going to watch this now, as I’d rather wait a day and watch the whole thing, but for those who want a little appetiser before tomorrow’s main course, feel free to discuss below.

This one’s been floating around for a while but it’s remained on the fringe of our spoiler policy until UKTV started drawing direct attention to it. As it looks like they’re leaning into this as part of the Cured promotion we couldn’t rightly ignore it much longer. However, as a last stand to demonstrate our opinion that this is a reveal that we firmly believe should NOT be part of the pre-broadcast promotion and that we would’ve preferred was kept as a surprise on the night, we will keep everything after the jump…

It's October, the month in which Red Dwarf XII hits Dave, after having hit UKTV Play a week earlier. You can count the number of days to go on one hand, which means it's about time we prepared ourselves as much as possible to receive, process and dissect six brand new episodes. Last year, Series XI hit us like no other series had before, and lessons have been learned this time around, so we're making a few little changes to our plans. We've also taken the opportunity to make some small but significant changes to the site's structure, so allow us to talk you through it all.

Bit of a funny update this week, as the true premiere of series XII has kind of ended up sneaking up on people due to the fact that it will once again have its episodes streamed on UKTV Play 7 days before broadcast. More excitingly, however, four new publicity photos have been added to the XII gallery and they all look lovely so do check those out. Let’s start off today’s update after the jump with a great picture of Chris Barrie’s face as a concession that I am incredibly excited about what is to come over the next weeks despite my moan about the nature of its broadcast…

I really don't feel I should be bringing this to your attention, but here goes. Earlier today, the UKTV press office tweeted a picture of the latest issue of SciFiNow, which features an interview with the four main cast. I couldn't find the magazine in any of the shops I passed on my way home, but just from opening up the picture in that tweet, I can see that the very first paragraph contains some pretty massive spoilers for the first episode.

Honestly, I was at the recording, and the two moments that Craig gives away were undoubtedly the biggest comedy moments of the episode. If an audience member had posted this online, they'd be lynched, but we're reproducing it here because it's been printed in a fucking nationally-distributed magazine, and UKTV's act of tweeting about it implies that they're happy to draw attention to it. I sincerely advise that you do not read this article any further. It would be much better to wait eight days and watch these jokes unfold before you, but if you're morbidly impatient, were at the recording or the premiere, or are just a fucking idiot, read on.

Red Dwarf XII Trailer Analysis featured image

Just as we were all getting over the first teaser, news emerged today that a special preview would air on Dave during Taskmaster, foreshadowing the handover of the "most popular show on Dave" mantle, due to take place in just over three weeks' time. The "preview" terminology left us a little unsure what to expect, but we're definitely in full-blown trailer territory here - forty seconds long, loads of previously unseen clips, a classic rock soundtrack and even a specially-created graphics package in the middle.

Having aired once more during another Dave original, Porters, the trailer then turned up online, albeit in optimised-for-social-media format, with subtitles and big chunky borders to make it square. Worse still, there's a fairly substantial change to the soundtrack, which we'll come to later. There's no sign of a nice official 16:9 version yet, so the screengrabs below are taken from a slightly inferior-quality TV rip. (UPDATE: UKTV have uploaded a lovely high-quality YouTube version. All screengrabs have therefore been upgraded.) Let's take our customary closer look...

Well, this is unexpected!

At the time of writing we’re not sure what exact shape this preview will take, but this level of teasing would suggest it is not insignificant. Whatever it is we have to wait until it turns up during one of the ad breaks around tonight’s Taskmaster. It does seem a little odd that we’re getting a presumably significant bit of publicity debuted on a weekday night and not in the traditional Friday slot, but I guess UKTV are still figuring out how to debut things effectively.

Please do use this post to share your thoughts on whatever we end up with, and we’ll possibly be back with further coverage of it if we deem it WORTHY.
