Potential Red Dwarf/Hyperdrive connection just spotted: Juliet May directed the recent BBC sitcom, ‘Miranda’ starring Miranda Hart. Interesting to see Juliet’s work, post-Dwarf.

Yeah, I saw this – Lister running in and out the GELF village, Starbug flying in and out of the lava pit, etc, etc. Truly hilarious.

Cheers, but sorry, Ian – my bread’s strictly butter-side up. :-))

Actually, just a thought, but regarding this whole ‘design a new logo for DJXVI’ competition-thingy, if not on G&T/dimesnionjump.info, how about opening a DeviantArt page or something similar for submissions?

You know, there’s some fantastic CG work in that first AvP. In a few of those shots where the pyramid’s walls are shifting, there are often completely digital walls in full view, and I can hardly tell which are real and which aren’t.

Even though they say Art thrives on restriction, AvP is probably one movie that I’d admit legitimately needed just a bit more money and a slightly more realistic age classification. Oh, and I suppose a script polish couldn’t have hurt. Conceptually, Andrerson made some great choices (the grid-alien, Arctic setting, etc.), but IMO, his vision was likely cut short by the budget.

The one thing I DID like was the low key music – a real change from the usual sweeping movie/opera-lite tracks that I usually use..! I’m sure it’s there to help the viewer focus more on the visuals, but as has already been said here, there and everywhere, the visuals are… well, ‘meh’.

    Hi there, David.

Yeah, I gave the trailer a brief mention on my blog. TBH, I was expecting a little more that what was presented (essentially, Aliens, ET, Minority Report, etc. in a blender), too.

Don’t get me wrong, the trailer’s clearly well produced – it just didn’t grab me the same way the Star Trek ’09 or Terminator Salvation trailers did recently. Word is, Avatar as a whole, works amazingly well in Imax, so maybe that’s the venue I need to see it in.

Still looking forward to the flick, though. I mean, it IS from James Cameron, after all. :-))

I would still love to see an anthology Aliens TV series – sorta like The Outer Limits with some stories set in the future, some in present day – just lots of variety in general.

If I recall, the ‘AvP III in space’ idea was to be the follow up from the guys who directed Requiem, but seeing as their film wasn’t exactly spectacular, it looks like Fox has decided to go a different direction with Scott Free.

IMO, a third AvP movie probably won’t happen for a while. If ever.

    >d) Bishop 2 is a human descendant of Weyland rather than a clone or droid, who rather looks like his ancestor.

Maybe he’s his time twin like in Kappatoo. Remember that? On CITV? With Denise (Van) Outen? And Andrew O’Connor? And Rula Lenska? No? Just me, then? Okay.

Actually, I always liked the ambiguity of whether A3’s Bishop II was human or not.

At best, it’s a question that needs no answer – just like ‘is Deckard a replicant? – the REAL answer to the question would just let the gas out of the balloon.

Though, I think the script for 3 stated that Bishop II was human, and there’s even a deleted clip of him screaming “I’m not a droid” after 85 hits him with the pipe/wrench/whatever. It’s more than likely he was intended to be human, but the reason why just got lost in translation:

“Bishop II turns. No wires. No milk. Real blood.”

…Oh, and yes. Henriksen is great in both Aliens and AvP. Met him at Memorabilia when he was promoting the latter. Nice guy.

    >The aliens escape by killing one of their number and using the acid to eat through the floor.

Yeah, the whole acid-attack begs the question, why didn’t they just spit it out (maybe, time was a factor, or something)? And don’t get me started on Christie’s self-sacrifice… If there had only been a justifiable reason for him doing so, I could understand. But if I recall, what remains of the dead alien is just hanging limply off his boot – why didn’t he just shake it off?!

I think on the page, Vriess carried him to the top of the shaft, not realising he was already dead. So much better, dramatically.

I know I’ve said this before, but Resurrection was the first screenplay I ever read, and for me, remains one of the best. Maybe it was just the particular draft I managed to get my hands on at the time, but IMO, the whole feel of the movie was quite different to what ended up on screen.

The trouble I find with Resurrection is that conceptually, it bears little resemblance to what was on the page. For a start, there’s more horror in Whedon’s screenplay, whereas the filmmakers themselves opted to go for a more Aliens-lite, action/adventure approach, cutting a fair amount of it out for no discernable reason.

Something that also sticks in my mind is the one line of stage direction which states the Betty and Auriga should not look alike, as to provide better contrast between them:

“A small vessel, it is every bit dirty and jerry-rigged as the Auriga is pristine.”

…I can’t tell you how disappointed I was when I finally saw the interior of the Auriga on the big screen for the first time.

Characterisation was also thrown out of the window to some degree. The music, although beautiful didn’t help, with its overtly ‘classic’ movie monster stylings. Some of the casting was off. The early CG effects were a bit of a miscalculation…

In short, I just don’t feel Whedon’s script was mostly to blame. Like all screenplays, his needed a polish here or there, but I have a feeling, if Scott, Cameron, or even Fincher had been behind the wheel on his shooting draft, Resurrection wouldn’t have received half the criticisms it did, and still does.

Great to hear Scott’s back in the driving seat. Though I can’t help but wonder what James Cameron’s story for 5 might’ve entailed. Perhaps, a sequel rather than a prequel?

Apparently, much of the original art for the first two MI games just isn’t up to scratch for this kind of hi-def 3D rendering. If I recall, the hand-drawn plates for the second game were just about the size of a postcard, with any flaws made imperceptible thanks to the low-res digitizing.

However, some better quality concept art is said to exist, so in theory, they could use the same process to make an MI:II SE. There’s some featured in the book, Rogue Leaders, which I’d love to check out at some point.
