There’s also a great Smegazine strip called “Evolution” that concerns the crew happening upon an E-cellerator gun (I think). Rimmer hopes to use it to become the next stage of hologram – a solidgram – but because the device is broken, it works in reverse and he becomes a silent movie. Kryten turns into a vacuum cleaner, Lister an ape, Cat a kitten, etc.

While Holly, Talkie Toaster and the Skutters attempt to repair the device, Lister’s bacon and chilli butty turns into an attractive pig-woman (ala the evolved Cat) who, upon discovering that Lister was about to eat her in a sandwich, storms out and locks herself in a stasis booth to wait for a more advanced species of ‘pigkind’ to evolve naturally, and join her. I’d have loved to have seen that adapted, actually.

    >Really excited about Behind The Curtains, it’s a piece of television that deserves a lot more attention than it has been given.

Yeah, I heard something about that.

Surely, it’s only a matter of time before someone writes a custom Smart TV script that, at least, makes digitext *look* like the old-style teletext. If it hasn’t happened already, I really hope it does, eventually.

The writer/director/producer commentary on the BFI DVD is great. There’s also a mini doco and some downloadable PDFs (scripts, short story). It’s fairly difficult to track down an original these days – not quite up there with The Stone Tape or The War Game, in terms of rarity – but every once in a while, you can find a copy in the ‘upwards of £20’ bracket.

The blockquote thing didn’t work for me initially (maybe I wasn’t doing it right?) For some reason, it just condensed *everything* into a grey box, despite copying in between the inverted commas. Will test now using Danny and HelloMabel’s last two posts. Hopefully two grey boxes can be seen:

That’s actually quite a tough choice! Of course, I would strongly recommend GW, but it all depends on whether the focus is to compare Dwarf to other circa-90s *comedy* shows, first and foremost. I might be bias, but I really think GW really shows Craig’s agility as an actor. He made that role his own.

…Can’t they just check out all four shows? And if not, why not?! :D

Cappsy, FYI – my most recent comment on the GHOSTWATCH thread looks a bit fucked up. Don’t know why, but I couldn’t add two > comments on one response (only one came up) so I responded to Jo and Danny individually, but I’ve just noticed that half of one reply seems to have encroached onto the other and of course, there’s no edit option anymore to try and correct. Weird.

‘Nitpicking’ suggests the above points are merely surface flaws. Maybe they are, but I see them as fundamental problems with the series as a whole. From a fan’s perspective, VIII failed for several reasons, but the logic of the story arc surely has to be a major contributing factor.

Series VIII in a nutshell, for me: Lifelong Dwarf fan, and I forgot to watch the final episode. :/

The series’ biggest problem as a whole seems to be consistency. Despite being a noble effort, with one or two memorable moments, overall, it was a step backwards. Red Dwarf at its best demonstrates how a television show *should* evolve. Each subsequent series (up to VII) builds upon the last in some shape or form. VIII almost feels like a faded memory – a throwback to some earlier series that never actually happened. Worryingly, at times, the show veers dangerously close to becoming the spoof it always promised not to be.

The characters don’t seem quite right. There’s very little logic to the situation, which makes for a very jarring viewing experience. The resurrected crew is clearly aware they are now three million years from home, but a command structure still exists onboard ship. Wouldn’t everyone start freaking out and mutiny? Red Dwarf is not a science vessel, it’s a commercial ship. The crew are mostly an assortment of miners, engineers, metallurgists and technicians. They don’t have a mission of exploration, as such, as they do a contract of employment. That contract is now null and void.

Above all, no-one seems to share Lister’s desire to return home, or find a new world to settle on. This could’ve made for some great conflict and comedy drama – do we continue to search for Earth, or join the rest of the crew on a new planet?

Furthermore, the only crewmembers who have any knowledge of this region of space are quickly thrown in jail without any kind of debrief (wait, there’s a jail?!) – the mostly-unhinged population of which are routinely armed with steyr AUG carbines and sent on high-risk missions to explore derelict spacecraft..? It just doesn’t make any kind of sense. And this coming from a show that introduced the otherwise entirely plausible, killer shami kebab and curry monster, among others.

Series VIII could’ve been so much more. But for whatever reason, it strayed from what made Red Dwarf so special in the first place. That is what made it so disappointing to me.

    >I’m apologising for not having seen it. Same as I’ve not seen the Alien movies etc. Lots of classics I’ve never seen.

Oh, wow. Check ’em out, Si!

    >I’ve never seen the Godfather trilogy either.

Oh, wow. Check ’em out, Dan!

    >Not seen the latest Hulk one, or Thor or Captain America.

They’re not bad films as such, but I found them fairly repetitive and/or underwhelming. They all look the same. They all sound the same. They all start the same. They all end the same. Pick one – watch it three times.

    >Robocop 3 has been sat unopened in my box set since i bought it.

That’s also probably for the best. Frankly, RoboCop 3 for the Amiga 500 has more depth, complexity and suspense than the film, imo.

If you can, do try and check out a copy of Frank Miller’s RoboCop 2 (the original story in comic book form). I think you’ll find it’s pleasantly insane.

Personally, I’m cautiously optimistic for the reboot. For me, Weller will always be RoboCop, but from a design perspective, this has definitely peaked my interest.

I’d say, futuristic eyepatch. Or maybe even sophisticated sensor that gives him even greater visual acuity..?

Ackerman’s personal preference to being eyeless aside, you’d think that in the future, nanobots wouldn’t have much trouble repairing injuries like that (after all, they can bring entire crews back to life despite their desiccated remains having been jettisoned into deep space centuries previously).

Also, if Kryten’s self-repair system could disassemble / reassemble something as large as Red Dwarf in a matter of hours, what’s the point in having a mining fleet, anyway? But then, Kryten was manufactured after Red Dwarf, so maybe nanos weren’t as sophisticated back when the ship was built (plus they had three million years to break their programming / refine their technique). But then, without nanos, how the hell do you go about building something as gigantic as Red Dwarf to begin with? But then– I’m reading too much into this, aren’t I?

I forget the ‘technical’ name for this, but I once heard that live studio audiences sometimes include a planted ‘laugher’ who has a really infectious guffaw that spurs the audience on if/when required. So, maybe even so-called genuine audience reaction can be manipulated *before* the edit, too.
