Does this mean the competitions are null and void, then? Shame, as I was looking forward to seeing the ‘Design a DVD cover’ entries.

In fact, it looks like all their other sites are down too. Weird. It’s been like this since before the weekend, with no announcement made or anything.

My old man watched the first ep. I was a month shy of my third birthday. If I recall, I first caught the show around Series II/III.

I like how a lot of fan plotlines include ‘business’ as a theme. After all, the first film was more or less a ‘going into business’ story, so it makes sense at least one sequel should be a ‘going OUT of business story’ (on account of rival companies).

I always thought a great opener for GB3 could see the original Ghostbusters watching a trailer for ‘Ghostbusters: The Movie’ in the boardroom (kinda like the opening of Goldmember), or an update of the 80s cartoon.

I remember, after signing the VHS, she looked up at me and said (in full luvvie mode):

“Oh dear, I’ve gone over his face..!” (having accidentally written over Rik’s picture) “…Nevermind. There’s considerably more face in the movie!”

I bumped into Fenella Fielding once and asked if she’d sign a Guest House Paradiso VHS cover… She was all smiles until she saw the sleeve.

I’ve always wondered if those Series IV scripts were recycled for the movie/live shows or are still sitting on a shelf somewhere waiting to be filmed…

Yeah, I absolutely loved the TV run. Bottom Live I, II, & Hooligan’s Island too.

I actually saw the fourth show live in 2001 – miles better than seeing it on DVD (even the ‘mistakes’ were identical…). Still, at least I managed to salvage several charred pieces of Dave the Parrot from near the front row. :)

If only Guest House Paradiso had fared better, Series IV might’ve naturally followed. I’m sure it’ll happen some day though. Maybe a channel like Dave could pick it up. If left to do what they do best, the ‘Rik & Ade in a care home’ idea could be great.

First time I’ve seen it. Nice find, Dave! I picked up the Bullseye one for a darts night a couple years back – Super Smashing Great, etc.

Love how the advertising blurb states this new Red Dwarf model features “screaming” and “more screaming” among the sound clips… ;)

    >The tinkering?s interesting, but it?s not a ground-up overhaul; I don?t see ?phenomenal? at all.

‘Phenomenal’ as in, for a fan edit – workload must’ve been intense. Admittedly, a completely rejigged/remastered official version spanning both films would be more than difficult, but yeah, I’m sure some kind of special/anniversary edition is possible, down the line. Maybe not The Definitive Take, but at the very least, something fun for the fans. :)

I’d still love to see a Series IX book happen in some shape or form. Imagine a ‘making of’ concerning a series that never happened… :) Could be great.

My main issue with The Donner Cut is that, in a weird kind of way, it isn’t really The Donner Cut, or even an Assembly Cut for that matter. If anything, it’s more of a remastered Superman II, with a couple of deleted scenes/screen tests shoehorned in between stuff that actually works.

I actually prefer a lot of the reshoot material in ‘II’. It just feels better, IMO. I like that Superman’s biological mother plays as much of a role in his life that his father did in the first film. I like that when Superman gives up his powers because he loves Lois, he softly asks for permission and guidance rather than getting tetchy and defensive with Brando. I like that Zod and his cronies are portrayed as more ludicrously fun than ludicrously sinister. I like the magic kiss over turning back time/hitting the reset button.

The Lester Cut just works so much better for me – at least it’s complete, I guess. An even better version was on Youtube a while back, called The Selutron Cut. Sadly, the account later closed, but while it was there, the work was just phenomenal. For me, it had just the right balance of Donner to Lester, pleasing both crowds by presenting the best movie possible, rather than just a single directorial vision.

I’m a pretty big Superman fan and have always preferred ‘II’ to ‘The Movie’, though I think they’re both great. I remember, years ago, a Film Studies tutor of mine tried to argue that the third film was the best in the series… :-/ Even so, TBH, I’d still put III and IV above Returns on the ‘watchability’ scale.

And yeah, GB II = Pretty Good. IMO, the first film was a knockout – the second (while there are moments of greatness: River of Slime, Vigo, etc.) just doesn’t quite hit the same level of greatness. Too much, too soon, perhaps..? Trying too hard to appeal to wide audiences..? Who knows. Anyway, here’s hoping GB III will fare better…

…Pic above not by me, BTW.

BtE should, at the very least, have won ‘Best Marketed TV Special’, or something, somewhere.

Personally, I thought the little tie-in sites, etc were great – just made the run-up to the premiere all the more special, IMO. In retrospect, they almost suggested an even more ‘grand’ affair than what eventually went out. The Lister postcard for instance, (if I recall) was worded as if the rest of the crew were searching for him. Kinda reminded me of Backwards (the novel).

Agreed. BTW – is it just me, or did the Red Dwarf theme sound a little more… ‘movie-style’ at some points? Could’ve sworn I heard one or two extra flourishes. Wonder if Goodall has altered the sheet music lately…

Man, I’d love to hear Howard’s contemporary take on the theme. Nothing drastically different, just perhaps a more experienced, refined take on the original.

    >How come Kochanski and Lister never dated in Series I and II, but in Series III they used to date? And how come she looks different when she?s a main character?

Ben, don’t you remember that great Series IX episode, ‘Revenge Of The Inquisitor’?

Centuries before his final Series V confrontation with Lister, the original Inquisitor created a time clone of himself in the event that his ‘glorious work’ might one day be undone.

After being reactivated following his ‘father’s’ death, Inquisitor Jr. erased the original Kochanski and replaced her with a new uptight version as payback. He also changed the timeline so that when Lister first discovered that she had died, he was even more heartbroken as they had now dated in the past.

Always thought it was such a great move that they managed to get De Niro in to play Inquizzy Jr…

The Blue Midget Mk II ‘Walker’ Class STSV has an on-board sensor array capable of 1:1 replication of any visually-identified ambulatory form. The Navi-Comp converts the raw sensor data into vector points, and then relays them to the hydraulic servos with virtually no lag time.

This enables large fleets of Blue Midgets to traverse irregular terrain with just a single lead vessel, thereby reducing the need for each ship to make complex course corrections, and shortening both mission time and booster fuel usage dramatically.

    …Or something.

    >From a studio?s point of view, maybe. But if that?s the creator?s motivation, then the creator is a cunt.

Someone once suggested this is where the biggest difference between films and movies collide. It’s just a shift of emphasis where art and money are concerned. Sad I know, but one could argue, entirely necessary for future (and past) big budget classics. Saying that, Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity might argue differently…

    >Surely Peter Kay wouldn?t trot out an unoriginal, minimum-effort, insubstantial cash-in, based on someone else?s work and not his own, just to make money? Oh.

But of course, all movies are there to make money. If when released, one happens to make the world a better place, or achieve anything other than recouping its budget – that’s generally considered a bonus to investors. I mean, Kay makes money – hence Fox’s apparent willingness to allow him to ‘remake’ a longstanding action/comedy franchise, singlehanded. As long as it isn’t just ninety minutes of him, Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman jogging on a treadmill to the tune of ‘Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow’, this could potentially be worth watching… He seems sincere about doing a good job with it, at least.

    Also coming soon… Jackass 3D!

    >Wait, shit, I meant Curse. Escape is the shitty 3D one that I have for PS2 and gave up on pretty quickly!! So, ignore that? I can?t convince Curse of Monkey Island to work on my shiny Vista laptop. This happens with most good old games (especially Discworld II), they will start to work and then crash after about 15 minutes?

    >It?s interesting that Curse of Monkey Island, while very different from its predecessors, still manages to retain the spirit of the series while Escape from Monkey Island was a towering shitstorm of half-arsed decrepitness.

Know what you mean. CMI certainly has its fair share of asthetic differences to MI:1 & MI:2, yet still feels very much a part of that family. As far as EMI goes, with the exception of the Red Dwarf references, I can’t think of one moment worth remembering from that game. Not a joke, a character, nothing. For me, the puzzles were mostly annoying, rather than challenging, and the 3D design work (although a brave choice at the time) does little to draw you into the Monkey Island universe.

Actually, aside from the humour, that’s probably the most important aspect of the series, IMO. If you don’t feel like you’re actually on one of those islands/settings, then you’re not playing Monkey Island. Pretty much why I absolutely adore the work that guy on Youtube is putting out. It feels immersive, and therefore, it feels like Monkey Island.

…God, I’ve gotta go play, CMI now! :))
