There are a few similarities between the film and series: for one, Dark Star is a kind of mining ship (actually, a ‘star killer’ like the Nova 5), and is also a fair distance away from Earth. The senior officer is also not only ‘dead’, but is kept in (cryo)stasis for, I think, almost the entire duration of the film. BTW – I wonder if Red Dwarf could also be considered, ‘cyberpunk’..? Stylistically, this certainly seems to fit with the whole, postmodern, ‘used-future’ motif, IMO. Also, something I have to confess as far as Blade Runner is concerned: it took me such a long time to warm to it. But then, the first time I ever saw it was on a crummy quality VHS, played on a tiny monitor in an equally tiny screening room. Truly a film that needs to be experienced in a cinema (be it home, or theatre). Psychoville feels very LOG Series 3, IMO. Right down to the cliffhanger endings for each ep. As he is operating on ship projectors only, the objective of Mission Three is to recover the Bee so that Rimmer can become a fully-fledged member of the team… Or something. Cat could access hard to reach places – Rimmer too with walking through walls, etc. And Lister could be the tough-guy with upgradable Bazookoid. Nowadays the intention would probably be to squeeze every last drop of humour out of them. Totally agree. I remember once trying to convince one of my old Film Studies tutors how at it’s heart, Ghostbusters was really a Horror film. The only difference is that it just happens to be funnier than many other films of the genre. The sequel is distinctly less Horror, and as a result is just not as unique or engaging to watch. Saying that, I always thought the ‘new’ concepts in GB II were great: Mood Slime, Slime Blowers, the River of Slime, etc. Vigo was great too, IMO. Must say, I’m looking forward to the upcoming Video Game. And GB III, of course. Heard they might be filming as soon as the end of this year. May 28, 2009 at 11:45 am in reply to: Obscurities on VHS tapes #99246 p2p_productionsParticipant >When I bought Speed on VHS, also included on the tape was a documentary, trailer and music video. Which, at the time, seemed a rare and impressive thing to be doing? Funnily enough, they did something similar with Ghostbusters. For some reason, just as DVDs started to become popular, they re-released the VHS of the first film with almost all of the DVD extras tacked onto the end – including a doc that was only available with the two-disc boxset, released a few years later. I know! Never could explain it until now. All I can say for sure is that the tapes were definitely not S-VHS. But according to that page, at least some of the Teletext signal can be retained, so thanks for posting! “…unfortunately most domestic VHS recorders do not keep this information. You lose picture resolution when recording on VHS, including almost all of the Teletext signal. By all means have a go at viewing it, but you probably won’t get much more than the Teletext or Ceefax logo at the top of the screen. “ May 26, 2009 at 8:26 pm in reply to: Obscurities on VHS tapes #99216 p2p_productionsParticipant I remember, my Ghostbusters II VHS had a bonus Real Ghostbusters episode at the beginning, too. May 26, 2009 at 7:55 pm in reply to: Obscurities on VHS tapes #99211 p2p_productionsParticipant A few shows that I’ve recorded onto VHS over the years have somehow retained a partial Pg.888/subtitle track. Never thought that was possible, either. May 12, 2009 at 1:44 pm in reply to: Dave’s ALL SPOILERS Star Trek Thread #98799 p2p_productionsParticipant >I?m so glad it wasn?t an Academy film. What scenes we did get of that were all that was needed. For this story, yes. The thing is, I just didn’t find the plot immersing, or interesting enough to justify a ‘3 years later’ caption card. Creatively, there are just two ways to get Trek wrong, IMO. One is to be too reverential of what has come before, and tread over old ground. The other is to not be reverential enough… and tread over old ground. For my taste, there were just too many unwittingly rehashed concepts, and aside from the retconning, and some other minor aesthetic choices, the film didn’t really have much else to offer in terms of freshness. But most disappointingly for me, I didn’t really learn anything new about any of the main characters, which might have been different if we’d seen more of how they progressed from lowly cadets to revered Starfleet officers. As far as modern-day movies go, there were some genuinely impressive moments, but overall, it’s only half-way up my list of the better films. May 11, 2009 at 5:00 pm in reply to: Dave’s ALL SPOILERS Star Trek Thread #98782 p2p_productionsParticipant >the music reminded me a lot of the score in Starship Troopers. A lot of the film reminded me of Starship Troopers! The Academy costumes especially. I heard the original idea for this flick was going to be more akin to Top Gun, and feature bookend cameos from Shatner and Nimoy. Apparently, two prospective titles were ‘Star Trek: The Academy Years’ and ‘Star Trek: The First Adventure’. Personally, I’d have rather seen more of the film set at the Academy, and with less (or even better, none) of that time travel/alternate timeline business. It was just too distracting for me. On the plus side, I thought Spock and Uhura’s romance was inspired.
