Trust me and we will escape from the ci-day.

Yes, it was Sonic 3D: Flickies Island. Presumably in the hope that there might be more Sonic 3Ds to come, with other subtitles.

Well that’s true. I still remember my immense disappointment with it (and my almost immediate rationalisation that, like Sonic Spinball, it didn’t count as a ‘proper’ Sonic game).

there was no game called Sonic 3D. unless you’re talking about Sonic 3D Blast. but that’s got a Blast at the end of it, so you’re clearly just talking about a game that doesn’t even exist.

In Europe certainly it was released on the Mega Drive as Sonic 3D (without the Blast), but with the added subtitle of ‘Flickies’ Island’.

Unreal that some people think 10.20 is late, and don’t go to bed at 4am

I wouldn’t do very well on 1.5 hours of sleep.

I can’t be bothered waiting up that late for it every week. I’m pretty sure it negatively impacted my enjoyment of last week’s episode watching it so late. I’ll be happier to leave it for Friday night I think.

also it should be owned by someone called Daniel, or Danny or of that ilk I mean for fuck’s sake

No no, a book that’s written by Doug but signed by Rob should definitely be dedicated to a Daniel but owned by a Ben.

I think that the book’s owner no longer being someone called Daniel only adds another layer to the joke.

In fairness, there is a connection, given that the Leopard Lager listings on there at the moment for last week’s freebie are going for silly money (£20+ and rising).

Some non-ebay online auctions I’ve participated in have had quite a sensible provision whereby if a bid comes in late – say, within the last five minutes of an auction – the closing time is automatically extended by a further five minutes from when the bid is made, and so on for any subsequent bids.

It helps stop the sniper mentality and encourages people to simply bid what they want to pay for an item without worrying about these kinds of strategies.

Ebay has always functioned like that as far as I know.

(Huh, the forum decided to post that part before I had finished writing it.)

…up until the last minute, when you snatch it away from them.

I guess I don’t see the bidding process as a fiercely competitive mind game that I need to win, in the way that some people do.

You’re still thinking more along the lines of traditional auctions, whereas eBay ones are time limited. If you don’t give someone a chance to outbid you, by bidding late, then you’re less likely to be outbid.

I understand that. But I’ve never been disappointed by being outbid on something – I’ve just thought that the other bidder paid too much for it.

‘Sniper’ bidding has just always seemed like a bit of a wanky thing to do, for me – it leads to the other person thinking they’re likely to win

That doesn’t take into account the psychology of auctions, though. Someone’s more likely to bid a little bit over their general limit if they’ve already placed a few bids already.

Hence “the maximum price you’re willing to pay”.

If someone else is subsequently tempted to go over that level, then you don’t win the item – which is a shame for you, but it means that the other bidder has paid more than you think it’s worth.

    That’s how most auctions work.

Or just type in the maximum price you’re willing to pay for an item and then wait to see if someone else is willing to pay more.

Anybody who actually bids on an eBay listing more than ten seconds before it finishes is an idiot and just driving the price up.

    Well, that’s just nonsense.

    I think he means:

My advice is to give “Follow this article” and when you have a few seconds to bid put your price. That way you avoid raising the price foolishly.

Anybody who actually bids on an eBay listing more than ten seconds before it finishes is an idiot and just driving the price up.

Alternatively, if everyone just typed in the maximum price they would be willing to pay for an item and then waited to see if they would win or if someone else was willing to pay more, the system would work fine.

Snipping is a recognized technique for winning auctions at prices usually lower than other bidding techniques.

For anyone who has doubts, know that Keecua is not illegal or anything like that. He is a recognized and reliable sniper.

So it’s a system for Manipulating Illicit Last-minute Functions? You should get a catchy acronym for that.

I watched The Inquisitor first and was hooked. It’s also a good introduction to the characters, but not in as straightforward a way as something like Camille or Demons and Angels.

I thought the first Moffat series – series 5 – was as consistently good as the rebooted show has ever got, when taken season by season.

I liked a lot of the RTD era but I never felt like its highs were quite as high as the Moffat era (with the exception of a couple of the stories that Moffat actually wrote within the RTD era, like Blink and the Library two-parter). The Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors have been my favourites of the modern era. The 50th anniversary episode was a fantastic romp. And under Moffat, the show has had what may be the best episode of the rebooted series with Heaven Sent.

Either way though, I think there’s a strong sense that it’s time for a change again, and I’m looking forward to seeing what the future brings.

Thanks, that clears up a mystery for me. I know the first series I watched was V, but I also know that I saw Dimension Jump and White Hole before I saw any of series I.

So I reckon that I watched V from the Inquisitor onwards, then went back and watched the second VHS ‘Byte’ of IV, then watched the entire repeat run all the way through after that.

Potentially taking the thread off on a bit of a tangent, but for fans old enough to have kids of their own, have you introduced any of your children to Red Dwarf yet?

My six-year-old has been vaguely interested for a while (after seeing a few clips here and there), but had never watched an episode until last week. We watched The End together and it went down pretty well. I’m wondering whether to just carry on with the first series, or jump around a bit and pick out the more kid-friendly episodes across all series.

(We watch Doctor Who together too, so I’m thinking some of the time-travel stuff will be particularly appreciated.)

Actually, I can’t have “caught up” with ‘Six Of The Best’, can I, as the repeat run was before that. I must have only bought that for the CD and the hologram.

    35. I first caught it when The Inquisitor first aired (I vividly remember my first big laugh was the gag about the comicbook version of the Aeneid). Watched most the rest of V and VI, then caught up on the rest via the Six Of The Best boxset and the repeat run.

I think Doctor Who’s relationship with continuity is fine. When you can use it to strengthen a story, you use it. When you can ignore it to strengthen a story, you ignore it.

Give & Take is the high point of the Dave era, for me. That episode is the one that most feels like classic Red Dwarf. I’ll be very happy if anything in XII manages to be as good.

perhaps the original, much longer ending, should have been kept.

It’s weird to think that there’s a version of the episode without Tony Slattery’s vending machine reappearing.

The original ending does have Tony Slattery’s vending machine.

‘Tikka to Ride’ to …. current?

    Lemons and Twentica?

(I assume that stuff like Stasis Leak, Future Echoes and Give & Take don’t count because they’re closed-loop time-travel stories.)

I think they should have had Rimmer wake up on a train on his way to interview for the Second Technician job and realise the whole series had been a dream.

‘Additional: zero zero one’ is actually Kryten’s original registration from the Nova 5, and they let him keep it and carry it over when he first came to Red Dwarf so he wouldn’t feel too homesick.

As we all know, the ending to the Series VIII finale Only the Good was changed at the last minute to feature Rimmer kneeing death in his nether regions, however the rushed nature of this ending has led many to suggest that perhaps the original, much longer ending, should have been kept.

I think they should have taken both those ideas and the abandoned Ace Rimmer cameo and merged three separate endings into one.
