Probably down to the secrecy of the thing to stop spoilers getting out. Now they’re all recorded, and i imagine once the screenings are done, then the publicity machine will be fired up. Dave are actually one of the better channels for advertising their new shows.

I think it’s because she was finally used for what (i believe anyway) she was meant to be for. A potential lover for Lister that he would reach out for but could never quite grab a hold of. In Series 7 she turned up just as the most popular character had left, and was just a whiny bitch, and in Series 8 she was a spoilt teenager. ‘We’re not friends anymore!’ indeed’.
No fault of Chloe Annetts of course.

It still annoys the shit out of me that Chloe is credited on the cover of the DVD, ruining the impact of that ending.

Anyone who has the Bluray, check out if the copy LIster picks up of the DVD has that credit on it :D

, I’d also like to mention he complete surprise I got when Kochanski showed up at the end of part three. How that wasn’t leaked (that I saw), I’ll never know.

Yeah, i actually almost, ALMOST let out an audible gasp when she popped up. It was an extremely nice surprise to be….well surprised in this era of spoilers all over the place.

It was actually the only time i actually gave a shit about Kochanski too. The first time i thought her presence actually helped the story. Chloe Annett was really good too.

The vibe i got from ‘Back to Earth’ was that of an (admittedly very well made) fan film. There was comedy there, but it wasn’t close enough to original Dwarf style to be right, and there were deliberate gags put in which harked back to the shows history, almost in a ‘look i’ve seen the show before’ type way that a lot of fan films often do. LInes like ‘This is worse than Rimmerworld’ spring to mind.

If i’m honest, i found the cast commentary on the DVD infinitely funnier than the show. it’s the only reason i bought it.

But the one thing which i will always remember, is that it was really fun watching it on original broadcast, and i was hooked all the way through. It’s just one of those shows that just isn’t worth rewatching.

Was it just my Sky box, or did the last 5 minutes of BtE tonight not happen? All i got was Craig Charles face static for about 5 minutes. Turned the channel over. Eventually turned back and got the credits. Did anyone apologise?

Was the Bluray version actually new? As they made it originally for films, could they have not just got an HD copy from a 35mm print?

Incidentally, that new Universal ident is great. I really liked the 1997 theme, but always found the graphics a bit bland. Now the theme is even better and the graphics are great. Only the ‘Comcast’ bit ruins it :)

I just tried uploading something copyrighted (yeah, naughty me). YouTube/Google’s copyright filters are now so advanced they had flagged it up as an infringement within about 10 minutes. I applaud their efforts.

Tip. I noticed that UK uploads of US series on YouTube don’t tend to get torn down because of the fact that the NTSC to PAL Conversion speeds up the audio by just over 4%. So whatever system they use must scan the audio in a Shazam type way. So if ever i have to upload anything with a copywritten track in it, i speed up the track by just over 4%, and it never gets taken down :) Most people don’t notice the difference.

Any chance of uploading Red Dwarf content to YouTube and it not being removed straight away?

I don’t know if anyone remembers, but i did that Directors Cut of BtE literally a couple of days after it had been broadcast on Dave, as well as that vid adding a fake studio audience to it. Not only did they not remove it, but i think people like Bobby even linked to it.

I took the Directors Cut off YouTube for that reason, as it was nice not to have it forcedly removed, and so felt bad that i could potentially be losing GNP sales of the DVD. I kept the audience laughter vid on though. Unfortunately i lost the directors cut when i had to make space on my hard drive. Shame really, i was really happy with it, and was surprised when the actual Directors Cut edits were almost exactly the same, even down to removing single beats in editing.

You would think it the digital age they would have facilities in place to find out to the exact number how many viewers are watching something live, at least.

I’ve often thought this. But I can think of two reasons as to why they haven’t. Firstly i imagine there would be an uproar with regards to Data Protection, i.e. how dare they spy on me, and record what i’m watching etc etc. Secondly i reckon they’re probably too scared of what the actual viewing figures will be. They’re probably worried that they invest money into finding out actual viewing figures, only to find out they’re half what BARB says they are, and they lose advertising revenue.

Of course, i have no facts to back any of this up, it just makes sense in my own head :D

Ha, look at those Series 8 ratings. It’s amazing how the ratings coincide with most of fandoms opinion about Series 8. Real excitement for episode 1, then suddenly the ratings drop substantially over the next few episodes, only raising again when we got ‘Cassandra’ and therefore the possibility of the series getting better, dropping again when we saw ‘Krytie TV’, then seeing ‘Pete Part 1’ and realising all hope was lost. I’m surprised ‘Only the Good’ got such a high rating.

I think Unplugged would be the best thing, as it would be unique. It’s something that would work very well, that not many other shows could get away with doing, as unlike Dwarf they don’t have the entire main cast with live performance backgrounds.

Plus i think with the DVDs we’ve got all the retrospective documentaries we could ever want. I don’t think there’s anything new that could really be done. Not to mention the Comedy Connections programme and A-Z.

What defines Canned laughter? Can a recording of people watching the edited episode be classed as that? Like Series 7 of Dwarf was? Or does it only actually mean when a laugh is artificially created using a sound library or whatever. How I Met Your Mother i believe does it the same way as Dwarf series 7 did.

Oh they’re not. But Big Bang studio audiences tend to react even when anything vaguely geeky is mentioned. But with Dwarf, not a titter.

God, that Red Dwarf reference didn’t even get a slight reaction from the studio audience. Usually a reference will have them laughing or reacting in some way, but Red Dwarf got complete silence. Sad really.

Even if Series X is shit, Doug can be depended upon to do a nice, candid interview. I miss Ed Bye and Paul Jackson for the same reason.

Dunno about these releases though. The Series 1-8/Bodysnatcher DVDs were retrospective documentaries, so you can be a lot more candid about a series after its been off the air for a few years. But I have a feeling that with a release being so close to the broadcast of Series X, they’ll probably be a lot more positive on these DVDs about even the worst aspects. The ‘Back to Earth’ DVD documentary didn’t exactly go out of its way to highlight problems that occurred with the production. But then again there probably wasn’t any time to have any problems!!

I have to admit, after just purchasing ‘The Next Level’ Bluray preview of Star Trek The Next Generation in HD, and seeing those ILM miniatures of the Enterprise in HD, i have to say i really am looking forward to seeing some HD models of Red Dwarf and Starbug. So SO much more realistic than CGI. Quite astonishing just how good those Enterprise beauty passes are in HD.

Would the models actually stand up to HD? They are great models, but i think an HD scan of them would show up their defects, i.e. the model kits stuck on afterwards, the different paint job, the lack of detail in places. Especially as the camera was so close to the models in most of the flybys.

Not just his improvement from Series 1 until now, look how much better he was in ‘The End’ compared to the original pilot recording.

Just listen to how he performs the ‘You’ll just go in there and flunk again’ speech in the pilot. His delivery is so forced, it’s unbelievable. You cannot so much see the cogs turning as be deafened by the sound of them.

That graveyard scene in BtE shows just how much hes matured as an actor since those days. Bloody fantastic proper legit actor now luvvies!

I’ve spoken to Iain a couple of times, he can come across as a cunt on TV and/or radio because that’s his ‘character’ if you like. It’s the personality he seems to default to, but in real life he’s a perfectly nice chap.

I’ve never understood why age has mattered so much in TV. As long as it’s believable that these characters would be in this situation, and their age isn’t completely glossed over, there’s no reason why it couldn’t carry on. ‘Back to Earth’ did a great job of pointing out the fact that Lister had gotten quite a bit older.

Is it really that people are worried that the young’ns simply won’t watch a TV show with middle aged people in it?

I’ve long been a fan of this guys reviews. He not only makes his reviews extremely funny, especially for the sh*t stuff like Star Trek V, his reviews go further than any review i’ve ever read or seen. You’ll see what i mean when he reviews the more techno-babbley episodes of Star Trek, or the episodes of other shows that involve deep character arcs or complicated episode concepts.

His Red Dwarf ones i think are not his best, and that’s saying something because his Red Dwarf reviews are still great. His best reviews are without doubt the Star Trek ones for me. Especially the terrible episodes of Voyager and Enterprise.

I love Jasper Carrott. He’s one of my favourite comedians of all time. But he is the king of reusing old material. I went to a standup show he did here in Jersey a couple of years back, and was mouthing most of his jokes as he was telling them. I suppose he’s from the old stable of standup comedians before they were big on TV, where you could use one set for years and get away with it.

Most of the full series DVDs are cheaper too….. Though I will say Series 1 is 1p cheaper for the ‘Just the Shows’ version. Are the extras worth 1p??? ARE THEY?

I have to say, i’m a big fan of RD, but even i have to say just how many times can you re-release the same stuff??? Including the Re-mastered, how many times has this stuff been re-released?

The only thing i’d be worried about if they did that is that the HD picture would show up the lack of detail in the original Red Dwarf model (by their own admission the original model didn’t have as much detail in it as they would like). Some of the smaller Starbug models used in some shots wouldn’t look great either.

But sure yeah i’d love to see it!

But yeah hasn’t it been pointed out that the film of 1987 Red Dwarf model shots had been lost? But then they did say that about the first Kryten shoot, and they eventually found that. So who knows!

Bobby did seem like he wanted to ask Rob the questions about why he left Grant/Naylor and what he thought of ‘Back to Earth’, but he was restraining himself, you could tell. Probably because it’s clear Rob Grant has eaten Mac Mcdonald, he could be next!

People do slate Fox, but shows like ‘House’ prove that Fox can handle really decently made drama, as long as you get the right people involved.

Much better a US Torchwood than a US Doctor Who. I see Torchwood as a show the US could probably do better anyway. But then they’ve done a lot more of these types of shows before. I’m not sure it would stand out massively if it was made.

RTD is going to have fun trying to get his gay references in though! In a TV landscape where you can’t even make jokes about toilets, try anal innuendo. The censors are gonna love you Russell :-D
