It’s definitely funnier than the Original Assembly of ‘The End’ in my view. I reckon if it was given a full series and a decent Rimmer actor found then it could have been really good.

That could have been funny for me, but the bloke they got to do it was a lousy actor so ruined it for me.

For me it was Peter Serafinowicz saying ‘At last i shall have my revenge…’ in his Darth Maul voice. Comedy gold!

Despite having BtE on DVD i bought the Bluray purely because i’d just bought a 63 inch TV, and if anything would benefit from Bluray it would be that.

The Bluray is miles ahead of the DVD in quality. Not if you’re watching it on a 40 inch or less TV, but anything over it is miles ahead.

Where it does go wrong though is the digital zooms that they did. The shots that are zoomed in are very bad quality in a lot of instances on the Bluray. A shot of Lister in the ‘ironing sneezes’ sleeping quarters scene is especially bad. Considering they had 4k to play with, that surprises me some, but it’s bad. The shot where Katarina is talking a load of crap about mining lasers and it digital zooms into her, you can slowly see the pixelation appearing, whereas on the DVD you just didn’t (obviously because it wasn’t high definition enough to see the dodgy bits).

That was brilliant overall. I’ll do what others have said and start with the negative and end with the positive:

    1. Firstly, the recording quality as has been said was a bit ropey in places. No matter how good the lines are, that will always distract from the scene, because in your mind you know that these people aren’t even in the same room together.

    2. The Lister lines and perhaps maybe the Kryten ones drag on for too long. Listers especially though. Kryten and Cat seem to get all the gags. In real life Craig Charles would hate that, ha. Where’s me gags eh kid ?

    3. Rimmers costume is a little too green. I’d bring it down a few levels.

    Now the good:

    1. Some really good lines in there. Most fan productions tend to steal Rob and Dougs lines and slot them in badly. You’ve used the Rob and Doug style, but put your own slant on it, and while very occasionally it falls flat, overall i think it worked quite well.

    2. Voice acting from Rimmer, Cat and especially Holly was spot on. Holly was the best. Alwight dudes….

    3. The animation was good. Yes it wasn’t Futurama quality, but it worked for me. A little more movement in future episodes would be better, but overall good.

    4. I actually liked the gag at the end, i laughed. But perhaps leave the fourth wall stuff after this pilot. As we’ve seem from ‘Back to Earth’ it tends to split the audience in two. If you want to make a full series, leave it out :)

    5. I preferred it to the ‘Mobisodes’ !

I couldn’t agree with you more. It tends to be people who actually either work in TV or respect the way TV is made that are so annoyed by 4:3 stretchyvision. Most normal people don’t care, which really annoys me personally. I HATE stretchyvision! Another pet hate of mine is the way some editors handle 4:3 material in a 16:9 frame, but that’s a whole other thread.

It’s not helped by the fact that a lot of Sky engineers and engineers who install DVD players for older people actually set the picture deliberately to 4:3 letterbox, even on 16:9 TVs. I have no idea why they do that. It’s not as if they leave the default setting on, they deliberately change it to 4:3L. Dumbass engineers!

Hyperdrive on paper should have worked. The concept was good, the casting of Nick Frost and Kevin Eldon were spot on because they are great comic actors. But it just didn’t work. There was no spark to it, it was just meh…

Anyways, i have no idea why people try and compare Hyperdrivel and Red Dwarf. The only possible link the two shows have is that they’re Sci-Fi comedies. They’re not even the same style of comedy. It makes just as much sense to compare Airplane 2 or Galaxy Quest to Red Dwarf, in other words none at all!

Hmm, i know there seems to be an anti-Lovett agenda going on recently, but comeon that comment was hardly anything bad was it. He didn’t exactly say ‘You were wrong to say that’, he was just giving his opinion on the bloke.

Anti,Lovett sounds like a great idea for a tv show! I’ll suggest it to BBC Scotland.

Watching the Directors Cut now. I’m shocked at how similar the edits are to the Directors Cut i did. Two edits most noticeably. The one where Cat is saying ‘It’s about this big…..no this big…’ He then says ‘Man it was just….’ then in the Directors Cut Rimmer cuts in straight away saying ‘BIG?’ instead of Cat saying ‘What’s the right word?’ The second one is the cutting of Cats Monkey Boy speech which i also did. A few others matched up too. Not exact edits, but edits being in the same places where i did them, just not as drastic as mine.

I’m not saying anything at all, i’m just chuffed that i think along the same lines as Doug. Either that or they copied me, bwuahahahahah….na never.

Interestingly they still use that one on some DVDs. The UK DVDs of ‘House’ have that one at the end, even with the really old VHS titles in it. Bizarre.

I think the most obscure VHS oddity i’ve come across is buying an original series of Star Trek VHS tape set and discovering at the end of the three episodes that were on the tape an ENTIRE episode of Bagpuss. Explain that one away, ha. It was a brand new tape from a shop too, sealed and everything.

Was wondering the second i first heard about this DVD. Are they going to be as frank about the production as they were on the earlier series DVDs? Seeing as they are trying to flog this as a possible catalyst for a new series, it wouldn’t be worth their while saying on the documentary stuff simliar to what was said on the Series 7 documentary and commentaries. I would have thought it’ll probably be more of a love fest. Can you imagine Doug saying on this DVD ‘Dave were tightasses with their money’ etc

Comments very very welcome, ta very much….

    >1) Music on the first scene – I would have used the Observation Dome music from ?Better Than Life?

Thought about this. But i don’t know, in this modern Dwarf that music just seems old fashioned somehow. Plus my Series 2 DVD was a bad pressing so i couldn’t get a copy off of it anyway as Disk 2 doesn’t work :(

    >2) The airlock noise doesn?t really make any sense – look at the wide shot near the start, and it?s pretty clear there IS no airlock :)

So where the hell does Cat come from then? Ha. That sound effect doesn’t make much sense, but i think it makes more sense than the original scene because the Cat does just appear from nowhere. And it’s clear he jumped from somewhere lol.

    > the cut is more jarring than the original line, and it seems more typical of Rimmer to go into all the details.

But it seems untypical of Rimmer to actually know all that stuff. Remember this is the Rimmer who has failed his exams however many number of times and knows bugger all about anything other than cleaning up clogged vending machines, it just seems uncharacteristic that he’d know all that stuff.

    >5) Could you really not have lost the ?I already AM packed?? If you cut to Lister just before his hand goes up, along with the fact that you?re cutting to Lister ANYWAY rather than going straight back to a wide shot, I?m sure it could have worked.

I did try and remove that bit, but continuity was screwed up whenever i tried it because Lister would suddenly from one shot to another be looking in a completely different direction for no reason, and even if i did get the continuity right it just seems odd that Lister would suddenly motion to Cat with no feed line from anybody else. It was the lesser of two evils to keep it in.

    9) I think that an ?End of part 1? break-sting would have made more sense than using the full minute-long credits for a nine & a half minute ?episode?.

Definitely. But i’m a sucker for those end credits, so sue me :P

Comments very welcome again by the way. Cheers.

    >Stabby – just watched it again. You must do parts 2 and 3?please! This version works so much better, the comic timing is better and it shows that the material (of episode 1 at least) was good, but simply needed proper editing. Don?t know if parts 2 and 3 will be a similar case, but damn I?m impressed with your work here.

Thanks v.much. I will endeavour to have a go when i’ve got the time.

By the way i’ve added annotations to the video to show exactly what is changed if people are interested. No Andrew Ellard style jokey subtitles though, i just don’t have the wit!

    >I considered this, but Kryten tends to do what he?s told.

True. A cut for the inevitable Re-mastered version maybe ha :)

    >That?s the very line. I think that whole end bit can be snipped off as it?s already clear what they?re about to do, and nothing particularly funny or important is relayed to the audience.

Again very true. I did try cutting the end of that scene, but it just seems like with that bit cut the Cat never really has that much of a chance to shine in that first episode. Yes he has that whole speech at the beginning, and i tried to get rid of as much of that as possible, but none of it was that funny or very catty, whereas the last part was quite catty and very well delivered, so thought it should stay in.

    >Wow. Obviously enough (from my cut, natch) there are a few remaining unwelcome lines that I assume must have amused you more than they amused me. But this is really well done.

Which ones in particular? There were a few i really didn’t like, like Krytens ‘ooh i already am packed’ line, but getting rid of them would have screwed up continuity. In that jokes case, with that line taken out, Lister motions to cat but without Kryten accepting the mission beforehand it just doesn’t seem right.

    >I want to see your edit of Part 2 and Part 3 now, because your edit of part 1 is hillariously good work. A massive improvement for me, Stabby.

    >Watched first couple of minutes?so far seems good, though cutting out Kryten?s post-card and explanation of where he is makes Listers ?surf boy back from broom town? line nonsensical.

Yeah Thought this, but then also thought that Kryten saying ‘What a vacation sirs’ would let the audience know that Kryten has been on holiday (plus the stupid hat and hawaiian shirt) and where else would Kryters go for a holiday other than the broom cupboard. Yes i know it’s not perfect, but it’s better than nout :)

That’s a good point. Katerina was mostly useless, but if you were to delete all that you would really need a scene where Rimmer actually sets up the dimension changing timey wimey stuff, and the scene where it all happens has Katerina in almost every shot so would be hard to get rid of her entirely.

Yeah very true. I think putting actual ‘canned’ laughter would be an outrage. But i think a properly recorded laugh track like they had in Series 7 could work. But then i’m in the camp of people who did actually think it worked well without it. Just a few parts in it which had jokes which would have sat better in an audience sitcom.

Nice to know our stuff’s getting a look in by them though :)

Wow really? Be interesting to see this. I recorded all the shows to my computer yesterday, and without the ads and the extra titles and recaps, the whole show clocked in at just over an hour long. I tried going through it and seeing what i could get rid of, but i couldn’t find a lot that would genuinely benefit from being deleted. Most of it that wasn’t completely vital to the plot actually had some decent jokes in.

So will be interesting to see what you come up with :)

I think it was Graham Linehan who wrote Ted and IT Crowd that said that creators of popular programmes should just not bother reading reviews, because at the end of the day the positive ones don’t help and the negative ones hurt.

Plus actually listening to reviews and what other people think should change about the show can go hidiously wrong. See JNT from Doctor Who for details. Also see Doug Naylor listening to people about what Series 7 should be like.

Lee Evans was the best thing in it. Anyone else get the Malcolm reference? :) Got to be deliberate.

But like most people here, I thought it was ‘meh’. I honestly think NuWho has lost its sparkle. For me it happened after Rose left. Especially with the overuse of the Daleks and Cybermen and the constant bringing back of previous characters. I don’t feel like they’re moving the franchise forward like Series 1 and 2 did, they’re just repeating the same old stuff. Hopefully when Matt Smith comes along, the reset button will be hit, and we’ll get some new decent stories with the genius that is Steven Moffat at the helm.

Oh and i defended the doctor kissing every f*cking woman he met at the beginning, because it was new and different, but i just sighed when it was done this time. For gods sake do something original, like stick your hand down his trousers or something….jeeezus!
