Colin Baker – Revelation of the Daleks. As loath as I am to pick another Dalek story (and such a comparatively awful one, at that) this is honestly the best from Colin?s era. >Really? I was going to ask if there were any better ones because I?m having trouble wanting to sit through RotD?s second half. Well why not try a Big Finish Audio, why not ‘Medicinal Purposes’? That story is fantastic with the added bonus of David Tennant in it playing a mentally challanged guy called Jaime. “Jaime and the Doctor, Jaime and the Doctor!”. It is certainly the best performance of both Colin Baker and David Tennant, their scenes together are a delight too because we have the hindsight to know that Tennant is the Doctor! February 6, 2009 at 2:39 pm in reply to: Marleen’s NO SPOILERS ‘Recommend Me Old Who’ Thread. #90655 JamesTCParticipant >> I don?t like RTD as a person >You don?t KNOW RTD as a person. From what I have seen in Confidential he comes across as a funny guy, witty, but I just think he is mean with certain comments, he compared fans criticize his stories on the internet to mosquitoes (may have been another insect), I just found that comment completely out of line and it doesn’t make me think highly of him, a few other comments about people on online message boards have been said, the people who mock him as a person are wrong but that is just a vocal minority. I give credit were credut is due and I slaughter episodes which deserve it atleast in my opinion, what is wrong with that I don’t know but RTD seems to think me saying why I don’t like a story makes me a mosquitoe. February 6, 2009 at 1:55 pm in reply to: Marleen’s NO SPOILERS ‘Recommend Me Old Who’ Thread. #90650 JamesTCParticipant I don’t like RTD as a person (though this raises what I think of him by a mile) but he is a good script writer (unless he goes for epic epicness finales or Christmas specials). Episodes like ‘New Earth’, ‘Smith and Jones’ and ‘Partners in Crime’ are wonderful series openers which RTD writes fantastic, I have already said this on IMDB that I wouldn’t mind if RTD wrote the opener every year, he always does them well, series finales on the other hand, well I won’t get into that. Really I just wanted Rose to die. >>It can look into more depth into a companion, yes. But when the Doctor is sometimes used as a background character just to take a companion to a new place I find it stupid. >What do you think of Hartnell?s era? In the Hartnell era he has 3 companions, of course it may seem like he is not the centre but that is because you need to explore all characters.I always find in the Hartnell era it is more a few stories in one splitting each of the cast up, ‘The Time Meddler’ and ‘The Aztecs’ for example. Usually the Doctor will not get the biggest story but he still gets a story! >They will date at the SAME speed. The Daleks look shite in almost all the colour classic episodes (fair enough, that?s just my opinion). ‘Revelation of the Daleks’ and ‘Remembrance of the Daleks’ had those brilliant looking Davros Daleks. >They now look brilliant, including the CG versions. However, in 20 years time they will look and sound as cheap and sad as the old ones do. Many effects in the classic series were laughed at even then, which is often the case in the new series. I just think that CGI will date much faster than the effects of the classic series which were usually models on string. Watching some Troughton stories with the TARDIS floating through space it looks more realistic than the TARDIS flying through space in the new series. >>I wanted a bloody death and don?t care who it was who dies. >Jack died. After Jack died Dalek Caan said “One of them will still die”. >>1) Praised for special effects – They will date much quicker than the classic series. >This is about as far as I got. What does this actually mean? I find CGI will date faster than the effects of the classic series, ‘Trial of a Time Lord’ sace station still looks fantastic today and it was over 20 years ago, I wonder if ‘Rose’ will look realisting in 20 years. >>?Dalek? is superb, >Arguably one of the best Dalek episodes in new Who. Well what has it got to contend with? ‘Doomsday’? The only new series Dalek story I find that is up to the quality of ‘Dalek’ is the latest three parter finale. January 30, 2009 at 5:22 pm in reply to: The thought occurs… #90193 JamesTCParticipant Oh do we have to get into this? Fine. >>1) Praised for special effects – They will date much quicker than the classic series. >No. They won?t. I think they will, the way CGI is advancing these days. I mean the Lazerus monster is already dated. >>2) Companion oriantated. >God forbid a show should be interested in more than one character. It can look into more depth into a companion, yes. But when the Doctor is sometimes used as a background character just to take a companion to a new place I find it stupid. >>3) Ruining certain enemies – Cybermen, Autons, Daleks though not the Sontarans apart from their pre-rugby match chant nor Davros, he was mostly fantastic. >We?ve discussed the Cybermen, but what did they do wrong with the Autons? And I think you?re wrong about the Daleks. Overused? Yes. But used badly in all those appearances? Only in Manhattan, I?d say. Davies writes Dalek dialogue like almost no-one else can. ?THIS IS NOT WAR! THIS IS PEST CONTROL!? Not specifically the Autons (though they had bad bits like the Mickey monster) but rather that big blob thing, I found that awful. The Daleks are overpowered to the point were I find it just stupid and the only way to stop them is a big hoover or a companion opening a thing on the TARDIS to stop them all (should I get into the fact that if she can see everything she can kill all evil and all Daleks ect.) >>4) Re-making Big Finish – ?Jubilee? and ?Spare Parts? were much better before. >Spare Parts was better, but also completely different so I?m not sure the comparison to an admittedly lame two-parter is fair. I haven?t heard Jubilee, but ?Dalek? is fucking superb, so yah boo sucks to you. Listen to ‘Jubilee’, it is bloody brilliant, easily the best Dalek story ever written. I listened to it specifically because as you say ‘Dalek’ was great and I was not expecting it to be very good, I am glad I was wrong. >>5) The Jesus pose – I hate that so much I put it on, why does the Doctor need to actually get up (?The Stolen Earth?) to regenerate? >Because it looks cooler than rolling around on the floor with a shimmery blue face. Cooler? The Doctor wants to be cool when he is regenerating? >>6) Cheating – One of them will die? >The Donna who was one of the best companions the Doctor?s ever had did, indeed, ?die?. Layered meaning, there. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death That explains what death is. Itis like saying if you get your memory of your life until you were ten you die, no, I get the meaniong, I just hate the meaning, I wanted a bloody death and don’t care who it was who dies. >>7) ?Epicness of the epic Daleks? or finales – I don?t like the new series finales, promise so much and never deliver, less is more I say. >Hang on, so you?re annoyed that they ?promise so much and never deliver?, but you want ?less?? Make your mind up, man! Either you want it big and they don?t deliver, or they make it big when you want it smaller (ooh pardon etc. etc.) You can?t have both! They are seperate. Less is more is a preferance, I think a finale would benefit being like ‘The Empty Child’. RTD is hung on being “epic” so what I want is him to deliver on his promises and not just end up using a big giant button to make it all happy. In ‘The Stolen Earth’ it promised so much and delivered in ‘Journeys End’, I was fine with that, the story felt epic too, he got it right there I felt. January 30, 2009 at 4:41 pm in reply to: The thought occurs… #90179 JamesTCParticipant >From everything you?ve said, I get the impression that you won?t be happy if it?s anything other than a glorified fan fiction audio drama starring Colin Baker. Don’t get me wrong I am happy to see new Who but it is like having a scale of happiness. On the top is a new Classic Series DVD, then we have listening to a Big Finish (only listened to about 30) and then at the bottom is new series episodes. I don’t like the way the new series is – 1) Praised for special effects – They will date much quicker than the classic series. 2) Companion oriantated. 3) Ruining certain enemies – Cybermen, Autons, Daleks though not the Sontarans apart from their pre-rugby match chant nor Davros, he was mostly fantastic. 4) Re-making Big Finish – ‘Jubilee’ and ‘Spare Parts’ were much better before. 5) The Jesus pose – I hate that so much I put it on, why does the Doctor need to actually get up (‘The Stolen Earth’) to regenerate? 6) Cheating – One of them will die… 7) ‘Epicness of the epic Daleks’ or finales – I don’t like the new series finales, promise so much and never deliver, less is more I say. Though I think saying things like that makes me come across as a real twat, think? Wrong word, it does, I will balance my argument with a few things I like from the new series – 1) Moffat – A fantastic writer has been revealed through the new series. 2) Tennant – I think him as an actor, person and Doctor are all brilliant. 3) Nods to the past – ‘The Next Doctor’ with all the Doctors, love anything like that, small but a nice nod. 4) The original theme – The first 3 series had a brilliant theme. 5) An extras 60 minutes of Who than before. 6) Spin-offs – Torchwood is weird but entertaning, nothing special but entertaining. Sarah Jane Adventures is pretty good too. I will admit this, while typing for the series I started typing a negative comment I had’nt thought of. To say Big Finish or the Classic Series is perfect is far from the truth *ahem* ‘Time and the Rani’ *ahem*, I just find them to be over all much better than the new series, I could sit down and listen to 3 Big Finish audios or 3 CS stories but I could not watch 6 episodes of new Who. Oh and ‘Planet of the Dead’ will probably be bad atleast for me is because I think Tennant as the Doctor is running out of steam, every episode he gets a new catchphrase and it is getting to me, I enjoyed ‘The Next Doctor’ warts and all but the writers are starting to get lazy with the Tenth Doctor, “What can the Doctor reply here?” “Oh just shove Allons-y there”, I love his Doctor but if he says Allons-y one more time I may have to, erm, turn off in anger for ten seconds, yeh that will show him. Despite what I say I am easily pleased, I loved ‘Just the Smegs’ for one thing. It is just as I said, I have a scale, I can be easily pleased with the likes of Family Guy which are good but not great, Big Finish and Red Dwarf hit the top of that scale though. I do tend to favour the Colin Baker audios but that is because he is my favourite Doctor and Evelyn and Peri are my two favourite companions. I type too much. January 30, 2009 at 4:10 pm in reply to: Ludicrous prices payed for DVDs #90169 JamesTCParticipant I payed ?40 for two seasons of TNG each and ?45 for one season of Voyager. Now they are ?13 each in a much shelf friendlier case. January 30, 2009 at 4:08 pm in reply to: Fuck #90168 JamesTCParticipant I actually don’t really care, if I cared about original versions I wouldn’t love Who DVDs so much, I would say “Eh restoration team, stop ruining my Who by giving it a clearer picture and better effects on certain releases”. I would love to have the original cut on the DVD but if it is not on there well I will just bitch under my breath for a few seconds.
