I thought the Downton Abbey theme was pretty good….

Also, Little Dorrit (starring the devine Claire Foy…*sigh*)

I love little lush piano themes like that.

At a complete contrast, I also liked the theme of the Frank Skinner sitcom, ‘Shane’ :P

    Heck…

His sets are iconic. No-one can deny that. He may be gone but, like Mel Bibby, his work will live on forever, every time someone pops on a Dwarf DVD or watches a repeat (or, in 1,000 year’s time, simply experiences the episodes at an unconscious level in the space of a few milliseconds…).

    RIP, Paul.

Mine was REM – Monster. Still one of my favourite records ever, the feeling it gives me, still related to the fact that it was the first. Actually…it was either that or Ash – 1977. Another brilliant one there anyway.

Snap! Though not the same Gemma I wouldn’t have thought…:P

The first DVDs I owned were the T2 metal tin version and also…The Phantom Menace (the menus are better than the film!), as well as The League of Gentlemen series 2! All ordered from amazon.

Another interesting factoid – I received them on 11th Sept 2001, so…I’m not sure when I watched them!

    > perhaps a better example, really. Greatest cutaway gag of all time?

Yeah, I’d say so, though, as far as the whole Lineverse (Lineharium?) goes, I’d say the cut to Moss probably beats all. Though it’s not the same kind of cutaway gag, I know.

    > it can’t be a coincidence that they have the ‘unnecessary stairs’ on the Ted set as well…

I remember Linehan saying in the commentary that they were nicked from, er, heavily inspired by Fawlty Towers.

I particularly loved the nod to Geoffrey Perkins in the doco. If it weren’t for him we would never have had Father Ted, at least not in this form. A true hero of comedy that man.

So, ‘Kicking Bishop Brennan Up The Arse’ is their favourite episode! Not bad, though surely it must have been a close-run thing with ‘Tentacles of Doom’…

All I have in my mind during that episode is how they changed the house doorbell sound to a generic ‘ding dong’ to make the laugh work, otherwise it would have sounded too similar to the alarm clock ringing. Also, one of my favourite lines in Ted, ‘Father Jessop, whhat are you doing in Father Hackett’s underpants hamper?’

Not sure of the ‘stetsons are cool’ line. He is now saying too many things are ‘cool’, is he gonna say it about every single item he puts on? To be different, Amy should be saying it (and meaning it). Though maybe that would be too much like moving things on, development…and we can’t have that!!

It will be interesting to see if that’s the last we see of the psychic paper. Is he slowly taking the RTD-era apart piece by piece?? Well some things he can’t wait to get rid of while others, like the writing style for example, he can’t seem to shake.

He still can’t help writing Matt’s Doctor as Ten with a new head at every given opportunity… Okay he IS Ten with a new head, new everything, and Moffat has already said you write for the Doctor, not the actor, but still… the babbling speech after he falls out the chimney sounds like it was written for Tennant, as did several other scenes in ACC and during series 5.

It seems to me the only person on the production who doesn’t want Matt to be David 2.0 is Matt himself!

After the diabolical notion that ‘The End of Time – part 1’ was in any way suitable for Christmas Day primetime BBC1, at least this year’s was Christmassy, and very watchable from a more casual or standalone pov.

In many ways I do prefer RTD’s brash insanity of deadly santas and Christmas trees, the Tardis flying down the motorway, Poseidon Adventure-like japes, people screaming and looking to the skies on Christmas Day etc etc. Though you could be forgiven for thinking 2/3rds of each of those specials were designed to make you want to take up cringing into your Christmas sherry as a hobby. Only the shark really brought that kind of feeling this time, and for that we should be thankful!

‘A Christmas Carol’ is still a rubbish title. Kazran hugging his younger self is also rubbish! Btw, did anyone else keep thinking of Matt calling Karen ‘Kazza’ every time the Doctor said ‘Kazran’? Nope, just me then…

Lastly…Oh my god, Katherine Jenkins. Oh my god, Katherine Jenkins. Oh my god, Katherine Jenkins… Right, that’s that out of the way. :P

I never watch them properly on Christmas Day, it’s not possible, even this year the quietest ever. As always, iPlayer is my friend!

The lovely Katherine Jenkins and superb Michael Gambon saved this from being a little…wet. A few ‘wow’ moments but the fish and various re-used/stolen ideas (Moffat ripping from himself as well as hints of Torchwood with the girl in the freezer let out every year, really Moffat should have considered ‘The Girl In The Freezer’…) didn’t sit well with me *sigh*.

Murray Gold – his best effort for ages. Yep, the series 5 Doctor’s ‘action’ theme all over the place but he did an amazing job of making it sound fresh, getting my heart pounding (though not as much as Katherine Jenkins did…)

Matt – outstanding, and even moreso in the series 6 trailer, which was awesome btw.

I don’t really get on with ‘Night of the Nearly Dead’ (despite Eoin McLove) or ‘Going To America’ (the last episode). The sheep episode’s pretty dodgy too, but the fact remains that even the worst episodes have several big laughs (‘fuckin’ell’.

I wonder whether they would have been able to resist coming back for a special at some point down the line if Dermot had still been alive. It still defies belief that he died the day after they finished series 3. Only 46 too… Because Ted is repeated so frequently and feels so timeless it’s easy to forget that he’s not around. Still, he’ll live on forever as the second best priest in the country!

If you take the first half as a single episode then it’s definitely one of the best (I’d say it might be…the second best :P). I don’t know about anyone else but it gives me a real thrill every time I watch it. There’s just something about the pace, the cast on fire, the audience going obviously crazy for it, the buzz of it being Christmas that it seems to capture better than most specials like this, despite how mad everything is (or maybe because of this??).

Even though the second half has some brilliant moments e.g. Mrs Doyle priest naming, ‘look at you lying there like a big eejit’, it really does feel like the whole thing is getting a bit lost. You can understand Linehan despairing over it. You’ve got to laugh at the obviousness of ‘oh we’ve just won an award, let’s write about Ted winning an award!’ Though they are way too critical over what’s still sitcom at its most essential.

That’s something I wish I’d thought of when I lost £150 over some tickets for a London show. Last minute listing, a relisting, all that, the winning bidder then said they couldn’t afford to pay me…

I could have mailed them for absolute zilch, seeing as they were going to be wasted. But no way was I just gonna mail them to the bidder, you never know if that’s the kind of trick someone plays hoping to get tickets for nothing, then goes and touts them for shedloads, and even though I would be gaining nothing either way, I would still rather tear the fucking things up in my hands (which I did, lol, whilst openly weeping mind…) than just give £150’s worth to some random timewasting bastard!!

Coolest thing about the tram crash was that it used CGI running at video-look 50Hz. This is extremely rare, if you think about it, and looked really good IMO. Obviously Dwarf used CGI but I don’t think any of the ship shots were video-look. Some of the other effects shots were. I bet The Mill have hardly ever had to pull off that kind of shot.

It seems the long and short of it is that one of the writers/producers, Charles H. Eglee, wants to run his own show and not play second fiddle to Frank Darabont. It’s likely he’s taking some of the other writers who are leaving with him.

Well that was obviously the episode’s intent, but I’m sure most people wouldn’t mind if the events of Victory were never referenced again! We’re likely to see the new designs again (hopefully only the red and white model) but they simply cannot be the standard Dalek from now on, I refuse to accept it. Re-fuse! Re-fuuuuse!!

    > “If you remember me I’ll somehow magically come back.”

Yeah, it really is a little too close for the godawful Last of the Time Lords resolution, with everyone ‘thinking’ the Doctor back to his normal form. The Big Bang was, of course, infinitely better than that particular catastrophe, but it still contained the kind of devices RTD got slagged off for using on a regular basis. But that’s the difference right there, RTD used them all the time, where Moffat hadn’t, up until this point, needed to go down that route, mainly because he’d yet to write a finale.

Seb, I’m not taking the piss (in this case), after I rewatched series 5 a few weeks ago that’s genuinely how I felt.

Okay okAY let’s clarify this… TEH, TTOA and AC were GREAT, not simply ‘good’. Amy’s Choice remains my favourite, with Angels coming a close 2nd. In my eyes, these are the only episodes to match the great expectations of a Moffat-led Who.

Certain other episodes (e.g. The Beast Below) are only worth a re-watch due to Matt’s performance. In fact, Matt saves sooo much of this series, notably The Big Bang which people will only ever remember for Matt and the fez. Casting Matt is one of the greatest decisions in the lonnnnng history of Who decision-making.

I DO feel something was missing in series 5, and I’m not the only one. The saving grace is that none of the eps turned out to be total stinkers. Oh wait…Victory of the Daleks, a total disaster!

In many ways I enjoyed Sarah Jane more this year…

Merlin is currently pummelling Doctor Who’s arsehole! (yep, that’s one for the slashers, even if it doesn’t feature Bradley James…)

There are 3 good episodes in Who series 5 – The Eleventh Hour, The Time of Angels and Amy’s Choice. A few are half good, e.g. Vincent and the Doctor, The Pandorica Opens, but all in all…it really doesn’t inspire me to pay out for the Blu-ray. This has nothing to do with Matt Smith’s Doctor. He is far more watchable than Tennant in my opinion.

    Merlin bloody rocks.

It’s likely we WILL see the whole of Gallifrey back at some point. After all, Moffat’s hardly gonna resist taking up the thread RTD left dangling in front of him. Though IMO this is the kind of material more suited to series 7 and beyond…

I love how Bill & Ted’s phone booth takes elements of both the Tardis and the Delorean. Obviously you get the phone box element from the Tardis and the flaming, sparking madness of the Delorean. It’s crazy to think that one of the original ideas for the BTTF time machine was a fridge!

I vote no because, regardless of Benedict Cumberbatch’s views about playing the Doctor (he basically said he would never have done it), he really does need to play the Master opposite Matt’s Doctor. It’s something that simply has to happen. Well, if not the Master, some other nemesis.

The idea that she just wants sex from him is so brilliant. Suddenly you realise it’s the way Doctor Who should allllways have been, right back to the Zoe and Victoria days! *sigh* Zoe…the places that arse could have taken me…void space, for instance…

Fringe being as low as #94 negates the whole list. It pisses all over 80% of the whole 100, i.e. should be top 20…

BSG IS one of the greatest sci-fi/fantasy shows of all-time. It would be top 5 in my own personal list, certainly above the massively overrated Buffy (saying that, I would probably still place it #9 or #10).

I’d never put TOS up there at #2 either, though you can’t argue with its placing in this list, there’s no doubt it’s one of the most important shows ever made. TNG all the way for me (even if at least half the episodes now make me want to end my own life rather than carrying on watching…..lol)

2nd episode wasn’t as good, pretty flat through most of it (reminding me too much of listening to an actual boring radio show) but you can’t stop watching it. Steve could probably say and do anything as Alan and it would be worth sticking with.

Yeah, that would be my only issue with it. It’s a shame they didn’t do at least the odd exterior aside they could cut too at these points, if only for a few seconds. Still, it was funny and I’m gonna rewatch it right now!

Btw when he says ‘It doesn’t make sense but it’s still funny, it’s surreally funny…which is why we booked you.’ he reminds me so much of Richard Madeley it’s untrue. Maybe Steve’s been listening to Richard’s radio show for tips!
