This might be a well-known mistake, but not to me. In Dimension Jump, there’s a rogue frame of Starbug at 16:15 (my copy) between the pan under Ace’s ship and the cockpit interior (“they’ve ditched into the drink” scene, when Starbug is already crashed). Three consecutive frames:

I don’t often specifically choose to rewatch Angels and Demons as it’s not a favourite (I’m not keen on the half on the Low ship) but watching it now and I always forget how good the beginning is. Well, it’s all very good, but I *enjoy* the first half much more than I seem to remember.

The model shots are brilliant too.

Now finding the same with Back to Reality! It’s not a favourite, for some reason, but I’m enjoying it more than I usually think I do.

Maybe V really is the show’s peak. I enjoy VI but between the two I think I prefer not having quite so many repetitive/formulaic jokes. They have their place, of course, and they do still make me laugh, but I think Red Dwarf does better without them.

It’s an unusual comedic structure, thinking about it: straight, funny, funny, funny. Normally you’d expect it to go funny, funny, funny; or straight, straight, (straight), funny.

I don’t think I’d ever listened properly to the names as I didn’t realise Davro was one of them! Certainly never linked it to Bobby. I’d always assumed only the last name was the funny one – and didn’t know until this thread or similar why “Quayle” was humorous.

I agree with all of this. I think the other names are in there for comedy, but as a secondary later which would mainly be picked up by people who rewatch. The immediate joke to elicit a laugh was Quayle, and the rest are just a bonus.

I think Heidegger is probably to start it off sounding like these are going to be legitimate, serious, people; I didn’t know who he was but historically the great thinkers haven’t always had English-sounding names so his works on that superficial level as well.

An observation of fan perception rather than the show:

I came across a Twitter thread ranking the episodes in the user’s favoured order. Camille came below Krytie TV, Queeg was below {sobs} Pete and BITR because it was ‘boring’ now they’ve seen it so often! These were the two lowest-ranked eps of the BBC-era, 60 and 51 respectively. Much of series I and II came in the low/middle, most of VII was middling/top third … and number 1 was Siliconia!

Just blew my mind, to see such a COMPLETELY different perception of the episodes. Absolutely amazing.

Similar to the time wand, it was only years later that I saw ‘wand’ being used for everyday things like vacuum cleaners and blind openers. I used to wonder why Kryten had come up with this fancy magical name.

Huh, I’d never thought of that before. The only ‘wand’ I can think of for household electricals is curling wand (for hair, not that I ever use one, terribly damaging things). Maybe that nomenclature fad* passed me by.

Maybe it’s just the pandemic sending my hygiene standards sky rocketing but it just seems rank to see him rub his finger across the grime and then stick it back in his mouth!

Can’t Smeg Won’t Smeg very nearly triggered my now mostly-dormant OCD. NONE of them washed their hands after handling the raw chicken – just the thought of it is making me feel anxious even now.

It’s kinda funny how TPL kinda addressed a lot of the issues some people have with a lot of the Dave era. Too many plots, not enough time, quick endings, broad characterisation, over the top acting etc. And then people go asking for a series again which presumably would have the same issues as before.

Ha, true, I am guilty of that. For me I guess it’s a naive hope that we might get one last decent series – and I actually overall enjoy X and XI, the highs outweigh the lows for me. Also a series has more chances of getting a total of 90mins right ;)

BUT as long as we get the highs along with any lows, not just the lows, I am happy to get more Red Dwarf in whatever format that may be. I think most of us accept it for what it is now, and still overall love it even if it’s not as good as it was in its prime.

Is that true, though? I know that IP/copyright law would prevent the seller from making, well, copies, and selling those – but just selling the single, original script that legally belongs to you is allowed, surely?

My first thought would be that surely it breaks some NDA (so not copyright, true). Secondly, they don’t have the right to make any money from his work that is not available to the public.

With second-hand physical works (DVDs, books, merchandise) the original owner paid for it from a licensed seller, so everyone due money from that sale would have got it. It is usual that such things may very well be sold on later, but the original dues have been paid. An unmade script not publicly available is an entirely different matter.

This is what I thought too. Plus I don’t think he’d want his name on something fake with the possibility of people believing it to be genuine.

The movie scraps would make a great follow-up to the series VIII book. Type up Doug’s anecdotes about the whole development hell, then print the script/s in full, illustrated with concept art, read-through photos and whatever else.

Or have Chris Barrie read the script over some drawings like the other lost stories.

I don’t think there’s any way of messing with them without eBay giving one a strike as well, for being a non-paying bidder. The only possible way would be if someone bid highly and then eBay pulled the listing from a report, but I don’t have quite that much confidence in eBay when it’s not indisputably conclusive such as a prohibited item might be. I don’t quite know whether to feel sorry for the sap that’s already bid or not.

If Doug does deny its authenticity I guess that might help the case against the listing but I still don’t have much confidence that eBay would act quickly enough.

I don’t think this deserves its own thread but just an FYI – it appears Red Dwarf will no longer be on Netflix (UK) after June 14th. Apparently this happens periodically with Stargate in the US and it often comes back once the contract is renegotiated, but I don’t hold out hope for this as I would imagine RD may be moving over to BritBox.

Presumably for many of here it’s more of an inconvenience than an actual problem (or none at all if you already have BritBox and it does go there), but still worth a heads-up.

From ship/cage projection to light bee, we have to assume that everything post s03 is at least much newer technology Kryten picked up at some point and used to upgrade Rimmer.

Obviously doesn’t explain why then you couldn’t have two holograms, ship generated and light bee generated … or even multiple light bees … but eh, it’ll never be completely reconcilable.

In this case, I reckon Rimmer would have threatened that if they ran a hologram of anyone with a higher ranking, he’d change it (or however many) into versions of himself ;D I think he learned from Me² but is still so petty he’d have gone ahead with it anyway, because it was hell for everyone else as well.

Would they have thought to have another hologram or few? Extra company, sure, but was there anyone Lister and Rimmer could agree on? Even if there were somehow, I still think rank would have been Rimmer’s sticking point.

It would also be possible that Holly vetoed the idea even if the others wanted someone else around.

Crushing/zapping light bees is presented as if it (re-)kills holograms, and the end of Meltdown wouldn’t mean as much if Rimmer could just transfer to a new one (unless Holly ignored his pleas).

There could be a techy explanation for this (I’m thinking like when you delete a file and it syncs to delete the file wherever else it’s stored) but I don’t know if that would make sense or why they’d set it up like that. The holograms don’t have the full human experience anyway so why put the possibility of re-death? Or is it some sort of bug that’s never been fixed?

quinn_drummer series VIII didn’t count in my mind, because although the universe may not be populated the ship certainly is – but actually it fits very well into the premise of an unpopulated universe, it just feels totally different from the rest because our characters are not alone any more. But the crew are alone in the universe.

I don’t know if this is a vain grasp at trying to find an objective distinction, but it sometimes feels like they tend to at least meet more people AT ONE TIME in Dave-era episodes? BBC-era, they generally meet individuals whereas now they tend to meet other crews or groups?

Holoship a notable exception, but also Holoship is really really really really good.

Yes exactly. Holoship is an exception in the BBC era but we only actually see at most 3 of them on screen at once, and although they are not actively hostile it is immediately clear they are not friendly either, they only stopped in the first place because they were interested in Rimmer. And our main characters don’t even meet the crew, only Rimmer does; the others only ever meet Don Warrington’s character.

This is one thing most of series X and XI got right, for me, that apart from Lemons and Twentica (and arguably The Beginning, but the Yes-men barely count as actual characters and our crew don’t meet those) although we meet more characters overall it’s usually only one or two on screen at once. Samsara they barely even meet them, though it feels weird for the audience to see and know far more of them than the crew ever do.

The same goes for camp Hitler in Cured. The point is he is the reverse of the man we perceive, so that’s fine. And it is an absolutely brilliant performance.
But when a character is meant to be the bad guy, to have a dimwitted simulant or what is essentially Johnny Vegas in a pink coppers uniform, undermines the character and the situation.

I think Hoguey works because he isn’t meant to be a menace, that’s fine and he can be a bit silly. The humour there comes from subverting all our expectation, especially with regards to the crews relationship to him.

But imagine Inquisitor played like that. Urgh!

I largely agree, except the simulants in The Beginning – I can forgive the comedy there because although they’re idiots we know they are a real threat, there is never any doubt that they WILL annihilate our crew when they get the chance. They don’t get out of it by making the villains sympathetic to their side, they only get out of it by outwitting the villains. Whereas throughout much of the Dave era they meet people who are or become sympathetic towards them, which dilutes the original feeling of the universe being a hostile and lonely place towards the last human alive. In the BBC era they rarely leave any characters they meet on friendly or even civil terms! Lots of escaping rather than being let go.

Thanks for that, quinn_drummer. So not quite humans every other ep, but when compared with the first VII series the contrast is clear.

In Samsara it’s very odd because we the audience ‘meet’ the humans yet our main characters either don’t, or meet them briefly off-screen.

Is Dear Dave the one with the vending machines and him falling on top of one? I’ve just put my finger on why miscellaneous machines having personalities in the Dave era irks me but not in the BBC era – they don’t figure prominently as individual characters in the BBC era; at most is Talkie Toaster in White Hole. But dispenser 23(?) is an actual character in Dear Dave, I think, and the vending machines in Mechocracy certainly have more than a passing line.
*They’re part of the plot*, whereas in the BBC series, interactions with ship machines with personalities are mostly just to give us slices of life (except arguably in White Hole – and TT is never implied to be a character always there. Revived to test the intelligence upgrade, but we don’t see or hear from him again until the Dave era. He’s certainly not keeping them company after that ep by any means). There is no sense of having a conversation with the food dispenser as peers, but the interactions with dispenser 23 are more like friendly acquaintances rather than the machine just there to perform a function.

I guess it could be a signal of Lister’s loneliness that he’s looking for casual companionship from machines, but I dunno. Just feels like writing that relies on extra characters despite it ostensibly being just the 4 main characters. Fathers and Suns is another, we meet the medi-bot as another character – which it wasn’t before. Doesn’t feel quite such a lonely, lifeless ship any more.

So it’s not so much having extra personalities that bugs me, but how big a role they play and how much the episode relies on them.

^^^ agree, agree, agree, with all the above. The universe being well-populated in any way is its own problem if overused, but being populated only by human creation and not humans themselves is still a lonely parameter, with Lister the last human alive and Rimmer the only other human in his life.

I have other problems with the universe being populated by beings with their own personalities, but when they met humans before (BBC-era) you didn’t know when they next would meet one. In Dave Dwarf it feels like every other episode*, so it almost doesn’t matter when they leave Lister’s life, because he’ll meet humans again soon enough.

*I do not know if that actually is the case, but with the 3 Dave series that’s how it feels to me, anyway.

To be fair, rule number one of the reddit is no Smeg appliances. Nothing about toasters though, unless they happen to be made by Smeg. This is not a comment on the quality of it otherwise, though.

I think it helps that the delivery of the material is so good in the show that even if you don’t necessarily understand exactly what they are referring to the general concept of “someone has made a rude/suggestive joke” still lands and the adolescent mind gets that it’s humorous without needing to know the specifics!

Well we know from Parallel Universe that the Skutters can procreate so I’m sure with 3 million years and very little else to occupy themselves they could have created quite a few new baby skutters!

The skutters in the prime universe are male, so I guess Madge came over from the Parallel Universe. It does sound like they’re monogamous so any procreating will have been limited to when the children are old enough and by the gestational period of whichever skutter carries them (presumably the female if they’re conceived in this universe).

It makes sense to me that there probably would have been lots of skutters to start with but over time became fewer, perhaps not a high enough priority to use finite resources to replace them unless needed. So limited replacement, a small amount of procreation – presumably there are ‘enough’ skutters but with more hands and sentient machines not as many skutters are needed as before.

Re: Backwards, when I watched it before the Quarantine Commentary there were several places where the transitions were so seamless I had to rewatch a few times to work out how it had been put together. One part in particular springs to mind: when Rimmer and Kryten are talking to a man (I forget, it could have ben Arthur Smith’s character) in the pub; Rimmer’s standing on one side and Kryten the other, and Kryten’s translating for Rimmer. The cuts there are obviously where they change the direction of the tape BUT it’s so natural that it took a few watches to click, for me, even when I was looking for the changes! I’m not a huge fan of the episode overall for some reason, but the technical side of it never ceases to amaze me.

My thought about Rimmer’s outfit is the same as Pete’s, that the ship’s computer had an archive of all the uniforms used by Space Corp and/or JMC employees throughout the organisation’s history, allowing Rimmer to choose which one he wanted. The Series 3 and onward outfits may have even been added to the database post-radiation leak.

Interesting, that also works – for post-radiation leak uniforms, the ship would have been in inhabited space still, long enough for the database to be updated automatically (remotely).

The hologram uniform in III-V is like a double breasted naval dress tunic, so I’d say that’s probably the Space Corps standard hologram uniform, maybe for officers (Rimmer asking for an upgrade because he’s got ideas above his station maybe).

The beige work uniform would be Red Dwarf/JMC issue, and maybe he switched because in the first two series, he was focused on maintaining his duties despite his hologrammatic status so wore his uniform.

The quilted jobby from VI is I think, a riff on Picard’s ‘off ship’ jacket from TNG, the “man of action officer on the go” look.

I was never particularly a fan of Picard’s ‘off-ship’ jacket, so it’s no surprise that I’m also not keen on Rimmer’s puffy top either. (Love the colours though, of Rimmer’s.)

Not really based on anything, I figured the tunic + vague, non-JMC badge was a standard ship’s hologram thing, the reflectivity giving that hint for the audience’s benefit, and thought we were just supposed to pretend he’d looked like that since he was first booted, like the other retcons.

I don’t think we see any non-hologram, non-hallucination, non-alternate-universe-flashback variants of a uniform to compare before the khaki returned …

Perhaps he had a lot of trouble accepting he was a hologram and for the first two series insisted on having a live person’s uniform so he didn’t have the constant visual reminder that he was now dead. Then maybe by series III he had better adjusted – plus the fact they don’t spend so much time with old crew in whatever form (time travel, holograms of them, etc.) and there would no longer be the factor of it showing he was very obviously being ‘different’.

We see George McIntyre’s first day as a hologram in the khaki, so it could even have been standard to bring them back in it at first to give them time to adjust. (Not sure how that would work with the hologram interviewees being in the shiny uniform in Holoship from the get-go though – they weren’t around long enough to adjust.)

I’m not proposing any of this as serious theory, just pondering ways it could be explained rather than handwaved.

I always place Rimmer as being from an upper middle class upbringing, or at least as having ideas towards that higher class of standing in society. For me he would see being in a union as beneath him and he would see that as the position of the working class Lister’s of the world, banding together to take more things away from people like him who are their betters.

Definitely potential for character development there – I agree he would have initially been that way. Is it possible he’d have come to empathise with those of a lower class? I don’t know.

I can certainly see him wanting the power as a union rep, I just don’t know if his motivations would have been what the union members would want!

This is exactly it for me, I think. I watched RD via a friend’s DVDs to start with (just the once through) then later Netflix and UKTV Play. In my mind, ‘the bunkroom’ is the grey, first 2 series, because they spent so much time there rather than in any that came after. I honestly struggle to visualise the other quarters they used because we didn’t see them anywhere near as much.

I think it took me 3 tries to get into Farscape, I have no idea why, but once I did, I was gripped! Absolutely brilliant. You forget the puppets are not real people quite quickly, they’re so well done. I haven’t watched it for a while though other than the odd standalone ep, simply because I haven’t had the emotional energy. (Same with DS9.)

I rewatched series 9 and 10 of SG-1 recently but wasn’t in the right frame of mind to start from the beginning, and am currently going through Atlantis – for some reason that’s a lot easier to pick up, maybe because it’s from an established universe and they pretty much know what they’re doing from the start (in terms of gate travel, anyway!).

This era Red Dwarf does a few movie inspired ideas and non of them require an prior understanding to appreciate the jokes at all.

I can thoroughly testify – my film knowledge is almost non-existent (I only know Camille references Casablanca because it’s explicitly mentioned in the ep, plus later having read/listened to background info) and this era Red Dwarf still makes me laugh out loud :) I guess appreciating the filmic inspiration must help give an extra layer of enjoyment, but it’s not required to still enjoy what’s on the screen.

There’s nothing to say humans developed the tech on Earth either. Once humans went extinct the sentient life forms are still capable of running and maintaining ships, stations, etc. if they are functioning well themselves; even more so if they have somehow developed beyond their original programming (likely out of necessity).

Unfortunately none of those have distinctive titles either, that I know of.

I assume the joke was just that his head was so big it looked like a helmet, and the wording is such that you just assume it’s a sports helmet (can you tell I didn’t get that they were referencing a real team? ;) ) but clearly it works even better if you get the real reference too. Especially with Cat being American, and Zero-G football already established in RD very obviously being the futuristic equivalent of American Football.

… I don’t actually remember the joke either, but with it written in front of me now, that’s my very sheltered English take on it :p

The top result of that YouTube search is a compilation that someone else has done by the looks of it, so you could listen without giving the composer your clicks/views/whatever metric YT uses for channels if you’d rather.

I always thought Alan Rickman went up for Rimmer, not Lister.

That’s what I thought, but The First Three Million Years confirms it was Alan Rickman for Lister, and Alfred Molina for Rimmer.
