I loved Westworld when I first saw it…I was probably 13 or so. Don’t know if I’d still like it so much now, but I’m sure I’d still have some residual fondness for it.

    >if you fast-forward the DVD past the end of one of the documentaries there is an easter-egg clip

Wow, I didn’t even know this. Any further clue on how to find it? I’ve watched all the documentaries and I’m pretty sure I just get returned to the menu after them…

You know what, you bastard? That’s going to end up in my review on NTS, simply because it’s absolutely right and now you went ahead and stuck it in my brain. Curses!

    >Smeg4Brains has oodles of GIRLS he urgently needs to have sex with this weekend. Aren?t you jealous, Phil?

    I am…I only have six. :-(

I actually set this weekend aside for writing duties (finally giving Afterbirth, my novel project from a few years back, the good strong rewrite it deserves) but if I don’t break up my writing I tend to push on after I’ve run out of steam…which isn’t a good thing.

Also it’s been a while since I’ve played Mario Kart with anyone I actually know.

Maybe Sunday afternoonish? That’ll give Pete/Ben/anyone else time to chime in if they’re up for it.

Oh, and did you ever get Smash John?

The old NTS was getting kind of stale and predictable, so we’ve introduced a wise-cracking four-year-old cousin for Seb, Cappsy’s adorable Chihuahua who wears a different hat every week, and my own rapping grandmother.

    Hope you like it!

Is this that movie someone mentioned on this site a while back, only to have one of the producers or something drop by to call us all jackasses?

    That was fun.

    >the cooking scene works very well, even though most of the rest of the episode is crap

Oh, I like that episode. It’s flawed, but it has its charms. I also like the Dave’s Syndrome episode, and the one with Jessica Stevenson is pretty great.

It’s not a bad series by any stretch.

Last night I was watching the episode in which Manny and Bernard write a children’s book. I forgot how funny that one was. The Fran plot is kind of laughless, but all the stuff with the children’s book was golden.

If you’re out with a group of friends and one of them is visibly irritated with the rest of you, “Let’s see who can screech the loudest!” is an excellent thing to say.

I’m amazed at how many people like only the first series. I think series two is still excellent and series three, on the whole, is pretty funny. Some of the best moments occur post series one.

I can understand why somebody would see series one as the strongest…but I’m less understanding of why it’s the only one they think is worth watching.

    >(AFAIK, it?s never been out in R1 before)

Correct. I know because this has been my prime difficulty in recommending the show to others.

    >remind me which country the show came from, again?

We also got a 3 disc Hot Fuzz (you guys got 2, I think?), and significantly better editions of Blackadder and The Thin Blue Line. I’m sure there are other examples, too, but those are at least the ones I know offhand.

    No clue why this happens.

Oddly enough our Father Ted DVDs only had commentary on a few episodes from series two, though everything else, as far as I can tell, is the same. Why they bothered to leave the commentaries off (as they were already recorded for R2 and probably wouldn’t have caused any rights problems) is beyond me.

Also, I just got my Black Books 3 DVD today. Were there commentaries on the R2 version? There don’t seem to be on this one…

I have nothing against Grogan, but it does puzzle me that anyone would consider her a superior actress to Chloe. Arlene rightly points out that both actresses were operating under completely different obligations to the greater show, so the comparison IS irrelevant. But I have trouble with how easily they dismiss Chloe. I’ve never thought of her as a bad actress in the slightest. In fact, I quite like her. She’s a talented girl. She deserves a better appraisal than she got from that article.

    >Williams only took the role in the first film because he was promised (contractually, and everything) the opportunity to play Two-Face in a later film, and subsequently got absolutely shafted.

I’ve heard that they dumped him because they didn’t want to have to rename the character Blackface.

    >Half way through season 10 and still loving it.

I think Seb’s point was that 3-5 were pretty much flawless–not, as I had originally assumed, that the greatness stopped there.

The show still continuted to be fucking excellent right up through 8 (by my count), 9 had its highlights but the show started to really show its weakness, and 10 I don’t remember at all, but, being honest, that’s more down to me than the show itself, as that’s about the time I kind of stopped watching television.

    >Change it to 3, 4 and 5 and remove the ?arguably?, and I?m in agreement.

Not a fan of 6? Honestly I could expand it to 3 – 8 and be perfectly happy. Eight had a few dud episodes but it also had some of the out and out best, and on the whole the quality level was still very high…high enough for Best Television Ever consideration at least.

    UPDATE:
I’m a cock, because I guess I waited too long and the are no longer on sale at that particular store. Back up to around $50 per season. Boo.

I went back to buy it and nothing. So I’ll have a look online; I’m sure I can find them somewhere for approximately that price…

I’ve actually re-bought books that came back from a friend with creased spines or folded pages or something. That way I can still have a pristine (or close) copy, with the added bonus that I no longer need to be precious about the copy that is now damaged (making it an excellent candidate for travel or the beach).

    I have mental health problems.
