That’s the first time I’ve ever seen anyone include VII and VIII in “the classic years.”

“It’s a shame Chris Barrie is on public record as suggesting people should do other things with their time than play video games, especially when he will happily accept money to perform in them.”

I agree. It really is a shame that Chris isn’t a gamer, yet received remuneration for a great job he did in something that many people continue to enjoy.

    …wait, what?

    I actually don’t hate VIII.

I *liked* VIII a lot before getting involved with online…erm…discussions? Fandom? Not really sure how to finish that sentence, so let’s just say “before going online.”

Now I can agree–wholeheartedly–that just about every concern that’s ever been leveled at VIII is valid. In many, many ways, it’s crap. Period. (Have a fantastic one.)

…but I *like* some crap. There are plenty of songs, books, TV episodes, and films that I *know* are awful, but I enjoy them anyway. For whatever reason. Not even necessarily in a “so bad it’s good” sort of way. I just get caught up in something that I know in my heart of hearts is actually pretty lousy, and I’m okay with that. I can switch of my critical capacities and just enjoy it.

So VIII…I’m okay with it. I won’t defend it, I wouldn’t try to change anyone’s opinion on it, and I don’t even think it has any kind of merit, but I don’t hate it.

My hatred is reserved for VII, which I genuinely feel is worse in every way. (Has some great moments for sure, but damn…I hate VII.)

Yeah, you’re going out of the way to be shitty at this point. If your goal is to make sure nobody misses you the next time you inevitably quit the forum, though, you’re doing great.

Any chance of this making it, at any point, to North American app stores?

Ah, interesting. I honestly just thought it was something to do with my PC. Can’t remember how I reached that conclusion, but I always just figured I’d finish the game whenever I finally got a new computer, and then never went back to it. Good to know I wasn’t alone. (Or maybe it’s bad to know. I can’t decide.)

Also interesting that it contained so much content from an unfinished game. I guess that explains why it seemed like the game was about to end, and then just kept going into what felt like new, completely different (ahem) territory. Maybe inelegant, but it’s still pretty neat that that resulted in a much bigger game than we would have gotten otherwise.

I did finish the Grail game, so I don’t think I ran into the bug in that one. But I also didn’t like the Grail game, so…there’s that.

I loved The Meaning of Life (the best of the Python PC games), but my computer kept crashing when I got to the attic(?) part near the end. I never got to see the ending, which I assume is just that clip from the film.

I liked that one, though. I was very surprised and impressed that it wasn’t entirely specific to the movie; it mixed in a good deal of general (and relatively obscure) Flying Circus stuff.

“perhaps the nanobots just deliberately didn’t build a new Lister”

I figured that was down to Lister never having died in the first place, so there were no “parts” from which to rebuild him.

That doesn’t explain the obvious Kochanski discrepancy, but I thought they were rebuilding from what they had.

And if that’s what they were doing, then that means no George, because his remains were blasted into space and not onboard Red Dwarf when the nanobots dismantled it.

It’s definitely a good question, but I don’t think it’s one that can have a definite answer. There are probably discrepancies no matter how you slice it.

Many thanks to everyone who did fill out the survey! It’s been very helpful. I’m still compiling the data as there were a lot of responses that just indicated “The one where x happens…” and for just about anything after season 10/11 that means I need to do some research. Which is no problem at all, but it’ll take a while to crunch all the numbers.

I’ll update the thread when I post phase two. It should be interesting, so thanks again!

At this point I’d like to bring up the fact that I’ve never seen The Good Life and have no idea what Felicity Kendall looks like. I know Marilyn Monroe and her image quite well.

Having said that, the Kendall version of the joke is far funnier. It’s in line with the Rory Calhoun reference mentioned above. Sometimes the specificity is enhanced by the fact that it’s so specific it’s beyond your experience.

I didn’t know who Rory Calhoun was when I saw that Simpsons episode, and I’d wager most people didn’t. I’d wager as well that the writers knew damned well that that would be the case. Would it have been funnier if the name had been replaced by Matt Damon? More people would know who Burns was referring to, but I think having the name be too recognizable robs it of its comedy.

Jokes are about more than recognizing something. At least, they should be.

“I like The Principal and the Pauper by Ken “’The Devil’s Hands are Idle Playthings’ and ‘Meanwhile’” Keeler.”

    I thought I responded to this but I guess I didn’t.

Just want to say that I love Ken Keeler. He wrote some awesome stuff, especially when he graduated to Futurama, where his hit-rate was incredible.

I have nothing against him, but Principal and the Pauper is indeed shit.

P&C is right, though: it’s worth watching with the commentary.

“Bart to the Future” is what killed The Simpsons for me. The first time I felt truly baffled was The “Principal and the Pauper,” but overall the rest of season 9 was pretty good. I was glad to view it as an exception.

“Bart to the Future,” for whatever reason, just convinced me it was over. And while I know there have been a few truly good episodes after that, they were infrequent enough that I’m convinced I got out at the right time.
