Penny, you’ve clearly not read a lot of G&T. When we’ve talked about the fan club on here, we’ve tried to stick to constructive critism (although we’ve occasionally got frustrated), because the problems the fan club are having could actually be easily fixed if there was the skill and, indeed, the will.

You like BTL? Good for you. A significant section of fans do not, and also recognise that the production values are just not good enough to attract people to the fan club nowadays. It’s somewhat unfortunate that the fan club have chosen to focus on the lack of fan contributions, especially when many people sent stuff in that was not published. And, yes, Penny, I HAVE contacted James on more than one occasion, and left feedback on BTLi. That’s you assuming I’m stupid again, isn’t it?

The ‘mumbling and crumbling’ comes from a real desire to have a excellent fan club. I have no idea about the amount of effort coming from the fan club team as a whole, but the point is that it’s not meeting the standard expected from an official fan club when it comes to things outside DJ. James has admitted as much, to his credit. I wasn’t suggesting the whole fan club team should leave either; I was responding to the excuses that have sometimes been used by some team members to excuse late or substandard output. It’s a voluntary position, producing output which is paid for by the fans. Either you provide the service that is being paid for, or you don’t do it.

Again, if you really knew the type of site G&T was, you’d already know this. Also, seeing as you actually haven’t seen the site that is being discussed, what’s the point of you even trying to contribute to the thread?

Well, exactly. It’s easy to feel sympathy for the fan club team when you meet them in person at conventions (which continues to be the one thing they do really, really well), but if you’re trying to get new members, you really need to impress people nowadays. I can’t think of a single reason for someone to pay their subs at the moment, and I consider myself one of the more understanding members. Directly blaming fans for the failure of BTL is both bad PR and actually pretty insulting, given the history behind the production of BTL in recent years.

And Penny; please stop addressing people on here like they’re fucking stupid. You should have worked out that G&T posters are fairly bright by now.

Basically, if you’re not capable of producing something halfway professional, or don’t have the time to do a good job, then don’t do it. No-one is holding a gun to any of the fan club teams’ heads, and they can leave at any time without anyone blaming them.

I actually didn’t know they were that important! I remember watching them with my dad on TV and so got the Spitting Image jokes, but knew nothing about their achievements. Surely a revival is due?

I’ve not seen Ed Wood, although I’ve always adored Beetlejuice. A Nightmare… I only saw recently, and was utterly charmed by, as I was by Corpse Bride. I need to see more of Burton’s stuff, really.

Heartbeat is a show for people who want to be nostalgic about the Sixties. Frankly, I’m amazed they’ve even bothered moving on in time. And Last of the Summer Wine doesn’t have to be set in any particular time period for the jokes, really; as Seb says, it’s not like they’ve actually changed from episode to episode. Although Harold and Marina look even sillier with advancing age. What makes me sad about LOTSW is that it wastes Peter Sallis’ talent; he was absolutely awesome in The New Statesman as the retired hangman and pub landlord. Oh well, the series pays Roy Clarke’s pension, so I guess he can’t be bothered to raise his game.

Hmm…I got 31, and to be honest, I’m having trouble working out why you’re singling out Rose for this accusation. Surely nearly all DW companions show these traits? Also, DW is a kid’s show; one that is enjoyed by adults, but a kid’s show all the same. If the character development sometimes seems a bit simplistic, that’s probably because we’re talking prime-time BBC One family entertainment.

It’s possible that I saw series 1 first, and I’m almost certain that I saw series 2, because I was an obsessive fan of series 3 (knew several eps off by heart). No idea about the first episode, though. I was defintely a big comedy watcher by 1988, as I remember the continuity and series like Alexei Sayle’s stuff, so I think it’s highly likely I did see series 1; but no vivid memories, sadly.

There?s a great story about Katy Manning bumbling in late for her audition for Jo, and chain-smoking all the way through. They loved her.

IMO, Captain Jack is brilliant, and brings guaranteed entertainment. You can do very well without K9, but he?s cute when he?s around; it?s a nice idea. I think you?ve misjudged Rose, as she?s a much more complex character than she initially appears. But anyway?Romana. Yes indeed.

If it makes you feel better, Arlene, the only time Louise Jameson permitted Leela to scream was in ‘The Talons of Weng-Chiang’. She kept pushing back on the writers on other episodes, insisting that ‘Leela wouldn’t scream’.

I think Jen’s character is really misunderstood. She’s ostensibly a stereotypical woman, but as the first series progresses, it becomes clearer that she’s not actually as good at being ‘girly’ as she thinks she is, and that she actually has more in common with Roy and Moss. Also, I’m fairly geeky, and even I have had silly shoe experiences and have eaten goat’s cheese salad, and have read Heat, so Linehan’s writing really is on the button.
