Hi, I’m Moonlight’s best friend and one of those bolshevik socialist trans girls you’ve all heard so much about. I rarely ever post here or anywhere, on account of crippling social anxiety (the last time here was probably in 2017). But I’m always around and I just saw this thread and wanted to chime in and say this has all been incredibly weird, disturbing and sad.

But mainly I wanted to echo Asclepius’ comments that you’re all a fucking great bunch of cunts. You really are. I mean, honestly, you are lovely guys. Your dwarfcasts have really helped me get through some tough times. The Smegazine and Re-disc-overy episodes have been some of the best material you’ve ever made. And your creation of the smegadrive leading to incessant meme threads popping up (or just turning otherwise miserable threads, such as this one, into incessant meme threads) has consantly filled me with belly aching laughter. Truly a boon to the community. Keep on being wonderful cunts!

I still need to analyse that Skipper shot. Side by side with the raw fx shot from the dvd. It could be an upscale but I’m not sure. If it does mean a new hd transfer has been made, then there is much to be excited about.

But the dvd raw model shots are definitely from a telecine transfer. Unmistakably. If they were from a videotape source they would look as shit as they do in the episodes. So the negatives were available within the decade Back to Earth was made. That seems even more unlikely that they would be lost in that time. It also begs the question of why an HD transfer wasn’t made at the time that they had them.

Also, if that is an upscale in Skipper, with how good it looks, it makes me wonder why they just didn’t do that for Back to Earth.

You could if I was in charge of it. Also Back to Earth interlaced correctly and 5.1 audio on XI and XII. And every missing raw model shot included. And commentaries with Rob and Doug on everything. Rob proceeds to praise the Dave episodes but says he prefer VIII.

The negatives of those model shots must be out there. What was it Doug once said? The BBC lost them? That seems really odd to me. They don’t lose anything. They do junk things, but only pre-1976. I bet it’s buried somewhere in the archives. Someone needs to get on the case.

Hey KyoSo, I’m a fellow lover of video editing and Red Dwarf fanedits. Missed this thread last year for some reason. Haven’t had a chance yet to look at your edits but I’m intrigued. I also did an edit of Back in the Red last year for a friend who was watching for the first time. Needless to say, he was still fairly unimpressed. God knows what he would have thought if I’d shown him the original.

I’d like to help you out with your bluray ripping problems. I know how important it is to have footage in the highest quality possible. What would be the best way to get in contact with you privately so we can talk about this?

Yeah, I also hadn’t seen Blade Runner when Back to Earth aired. Didn’t effect my enjoyment. Once I saw Blade Runner there were some parts that made me laugh more but it wasn’t a major issue.

Count me in as another lover of Back to Earth. Completely agree with all of performingmonkey’s points. And just in terms of pure comedy, the Corrie segment is far and away the funniest material. Such a shame the jammy dodger scene wasn’t reinstated for the director’s cut as it probably has the best big laugh in the whole thing.

An American Red Dwarf would have been excellent if helmed by David Mirkin and David X. Cohen. Mirkin is one of the few American producers who understands what made British comedies like the Young Ones great. Has a sensibility for rapid fire jokes and breaking all the rules of television. Cohen knows how to marry strong sci/fi ideas and comedy. And they both know the importance of giving depth to their comedy characters.

The original model did actually have some windows that size but you couldn’t see them from most angles they shot it from. You can see them towards the end of the end credits shot though. I think there probably weren’t so many on that model because it’s detailing was just really rushed.

I do think the windows, when they light them from inside look really cool but yeah, when you try to think about the scale it’s nuts. But then it’s the same with Lister’s size when painting the F. In fact that’s better with the new model, since the letters are smaller.

Yeah, that was my fan edit. I just noticed the comment the other day and found it very perplexing. It’s amazing some of the ridiculous shit people write on there.

Even aside from any Dave guidelines, they couldn’t have done it anyway. Since the actor wasn’t even cast when they shot the bloody scene!

Wow, I was just thinking about this the other day while showing a friend how terrible remastered was but I decided against posting for the same reason as this thread title. Despite how terrible an addition it seems, Holly doing it just for his own amusement does seem to make a hell of a lot of sense.

When faced with a majority of the criticisms of Can of Worms (the strange plot decisions, too many ideas, missed opportunities) I can’t really disagree with any of that. But it did make me laugh, almost more then any other episode this year, and at the end of the day that’s about the most important thing a comedy show can do, I think.

Yes, ultimately it doesn’t really matter. But it also isn’t that difficult to fanwank a lot of these issues, if one is so inclined.

Yes, many people have noticed this before. I believe someone on the dwarfcast once made the point that it wasn’t said whether he succeeded in that unfortunate suicide business.

I think Darrell’s hit the nail on the head here. If it hadn’t felt like Remastered was a replacement and there’d been no question that the originals would remain the definitive versions, perhaps people would have been a lot less angry. This sort of thing should always be just a fun alternate messing around with stuff kind of experiment.

There is actually a lot you can do with the music and model shots of series V and VI. A lot of unused material which I think is pretty good. As well as some deleted scenes. And don’t forget there are some absolute turkey composite effects, like the worm hole in Rimmerworld.

What really surprised me was that the shot of Lister in the fedora was used and in almost the exact same place. More so because I only used that for lack of any more decent footage.

Nice of people to say it’s accurate but I don’t really see it. A couple of shots were surprisingly exact but most of the footage in the actual title sequence was yet unseen and pretty weird and interesting it was too. I think my attempt and the official one can both be improved though and a v2 fan edit will be out as soon as I get my hands on that bluray. What can I say, I am tough to please when it comes to Red Dwarf title sequences.

I have a suspicion that they may utilise the I and II intro for at least an episode or two of the new series. The model unit are utilising motion control again so get Craig suited up, roller dripping with red paint and re-do the intro for the third time but now, finally as it was intended.

I have a great hope and a also a terrible fear. That Dave promo model shot was wonderful and long and motion controlled. This gives me hope that there will be loads of these. But then I start to think, that shot has been repeatedly used in all the trailers, with no other big shots in sight. What if that’s it! And the rest will be more in line with X’s fly bys. A scary thought.

Hopefully, they’re just holding them back and I’m being paranoid.

Also, we still haven’t gotten any closer to figuring out why the new version of the end titles was only used sporadically. When it appears in V and VI, that just feels really weird to me. You’d think they’d have decided what version they were using by then.

Thanks, you’re too kind. I did have fun putting that sound together. Though it’s full glory does get a bit muffled by the music. If I had a longer shot of Red Dwarf, I would maybe start it with just the Starbug sonic boom, then theme tune in on the shot of the Dwarf.
