It would appear that I’ve fucked the timeline on this. That said, the concept would still work if the hologram disk partially pre-boots upon removal from a box, or if Lister had had to manually activate a pre-boot sequence, and plugging it in & flipping the switch is just the final step that hooks it up to the Projection Suite.

Perhaps the new Rimmer still has a sort of ghostly presence in the room when the disk is inserted but not initialized. His hologram is prepared to appear at any moment, and to save time the personality was pre-booted so that flipping the switch only has to quickly turn on the picture and sound.

I do, however, wince slightly at “wait… are you trying to tell me everybody’s dead?” The delivery, and look on his face feel so flippant, and for me it’s jarring when the very next shot is him wandering into the drive room disbelieving and distraught.

To play devil’s advocate with myself, one could argue that a combination of shock and non-comprehension of what he’s hearing could account for it… and we do get Norman’s disembodied punchline “should’ve never let him out in the first place” which is one of the most hilarious and perfect deliveries ever.

It’s hard not to chalk that up, in part, to the line being a little shit. I don’t think there is a believable way to play it without changing a few words.

I forgot that he calls the planet Rimmerworld in his creation monologue, I had it in my head that they only call it that when taunting the future crew.

Are there many Rob era episodes that have puns/play on words as titles? The only one that’s coming to mind is Terrorform, which is quite evocative. I suppose Gunmen to an extent, but that’s similar.

Three more sort-ofs in my scan:

– Waiting for God (maybe more a reference in the vein of Tikka, etc. than a plain pun)

– Thanks for the Memory feels a bit of a jokey title, at least, maybe just me

– Meltdown is at least very heavy on the double entendre

The Last Day could be Shutdown, as it would fit more with the one word titles of III. And I know they were concerned due to the smutty interpretation of it, but I much prefer Natural Born Rimmers to Stoke Me a Clipper. Is there any other story where the payoff to the title doesn’t come until the last sixty seconds of the episode?

“Polymorph” only pays off at the end of the episode as well with the “Contents: 2” sticker, as before that they were technically only dealing with a monomorph
