Given the typical demographic for furries and presumably the sheer number of spaceships, surely many furries have been brought back as holograms. Would they want to be brought back as their fursona full-time? If not, would they want to be able to morph into it at a moment’s notice, or does that take part of the fun out of it compared to actually going through the process of dressing up in a holofursuit?

I simply think it’s the right amount of just kinda funny to leave it ambiguous and a little sci-fi-ey to imply a missing series that it fits the show perfectly.

Perhaps I should synthesize this into a third justification as well – “Back to Earth is not Series IX” matches the exact type of half-homage half-parody of sci-fi tropes that, for various reasons, have plagued sci-fi media for a long time. In this case, bizarre naming/numbering conventions, ambiguous/changing titles, and things that are “technically” (but not officially) designated a certain way. Fittingly meta for Back to Earth.

I don’t think so honestly. Doug has been enigmatic about the rationale behind “Series X”, but he’s pretty much made it known that it isn’t because he considers BtE to be Series IX. More that he considers “Series IX” to be a hypothetical series that would have taken place at some point between 1999 and 2009, if it had happened. That’s not too big a mystery, what is a big mystery is why he would choose to torment us with such postmodern wankery.
