    >And anyway, how do they plan to keep up the subplot, I mean he?s raped EVERYONE.

Ahh yes, and someone decided to make a reference to it in the show-

    Lister: Not Chen?
Holly: Yes, Chen, everybody, everybody’s been raped Dave

On another topic, it appears that Jamie Oliver will be the new Holly. Apparently he will be saying “Gordon Bennet” at the beginning of every line, which is concerning.

mmm, certainly. IN fact, I prefer superhero movies when they point out that the lone hero can’t change everything!

Well, more of a wall of water spraying down that they go through as they swing on the rope over the finish line. It’s… a good idea when on a diagram.

Just saw the Australian version- it seems to be more close to the original than the UK one. There is four events, and they change the entire arena, like they did originally- mainly because it’s too small to fit everything in! The eliminator was almost the same- except they have a ladder where there was the cargo net, and the water fountain instead of the paper thing they would crash through. It’s all right- a little hammy, but that’s what Gladiators is all about!

I must say that series XIV remains my favourite. This is mainly because it was all one long arc, and we all know from experience that Dwarf fans love having ‘to be continued’ displayed at the end of as many episodes in a series as possible. Not only that, but the shipwide AIDS epidemic was handled brilliantly. The proposed solution of removing everyone’s appendix was somewhat hard to believe, but then again Kryten did it, and he did have magical powers for the series.

BUT I digress. XVI is a good series so far, but what about Lister’s third GELF bride? I mean, a new condom vending machine in the disco was required, but surely marrying was a bit too silly. Of course Rimmer’s fluent GELF (well, he does have a thing for languages) created a great situation for them to annul the marriage, but it all felt a bit much like padding- and what’s with the set they used for the trial? black and white floors and no backdrop? LAME.

Look, we just need to go back in time and use borg nanoprobes fired out of a deflector dish on the back of a particle beacon with the trans phasic polarity set to the same frequency as the polaron gravometric tachyon time phenomenon.

    >There?s excellent stuff there, don?t get me wrong, but the gag-rate took a while to increase, the voices/animation took a while to come together, and the writing was sometimes pretty spotty.

One of the reasons why the first two seasons resonate with me is that they have heaps of sad moments. After getting the DVDs and watching without commercials, I got a little teary with some of the more emotion packed episodes. There were episodes with heart, something that only appears occasionally (such as in “he loves to fly and he doh’s”).

Back in the early 90s the Late Show team got a TV show called ‘Rush’, cut it up, and voiced it over in hilarious fashion- in the commentary they believe they were the first people to cut the footage together to create internal story lines. Anyways, here’s part one, and from there you can go onwards to the other parts (I have the DVD of this and Bargearse, the other show they made- brilliant)

In the lift, he said “Presumably they’ve all been resurrected as well” (or something to that effect)- meaning he didn’t totally direct the rebuild

“Revenge is a Dish Best Served Three Times” is made in a very ‘classic’ manner, “Springfield Up” is gold all the way through, same with “Yokel Chords”, “Homerazzi”, “My Fair Laddy” is a great Willie episode and he deserves more… and so on.

There are episodes that do have a great start and don’t deliver, as you said, and others with ludicrously complex stories (when Homer became a fireman? waaaay too complex). However, it’s still better than Family Guy.

    >I started watching during IV, but it was really just another sitcom for me at that point. It was in the post-VI years that I think I became a ?fan?, thanks to things like the Smeg Ups tapes, talking to people at school about it, reading the books, etc. So VII was the first series that actually felt like an ?event? for me.

For me that was series 8

    >The Simpsons?yeah I agree, around 3, 4, 5 & 6 it?s untouchable, but I just don?t hold the show in as high a regard as I do others. The fact that it?s been crap for years adds to that, I suppose.

1&2 have awesome stuff, seasons 11-14 are meh (adapting to a new team of writers/producers) BUT 16-18 have some absolute gold.

The ‘Jon doesn’t hear Garfield’s thoughts’ aspect gets broken all the time- there are many strips where it’s quite clear Jon is reacting to Garfield’s words.
