I’m looking forward to see how they resolve the cliffhanger, so far time travel in the show has broadly been ‘whatever you do in the past has aready been done before you went back in time in the first place’.

I’d like to see a return of some of the RTD era companions someday down the road. I know that SM will wan’t to put his own stamp on DW so we probably won’t see any in season 5 or 6, but think about it..

Doc 11’s first companion is ginger ;)

Which did make me think of a senario where Catherine Tate would stay on for one series with MS after DT had left.

    Thanks for the reply. ;)

Maybe it’s just me but did anyone else notice that the actual morphing of 10’s face into 11 wasn’t very well done. I can’t work out whether it’s simply the beams of light that are concealing it, but it just seemed a bit, odd.

I think what suprised me most about this episode was that we actually saw 10 physically change into 11, i’d convinced myself that we wouldn’t see the exploding jesus regeneration this time,

Anyone else think that he’d changed into MS in the radiation booth until we saw his face?

Tanya Jones>You could have just decided that they probably knew better than you at the start, and nobody would have thought any less of you.

Now stop it and play nice.

Can we .please. just go back to the thread discussion.

For me Doc 10’s last words were a pretty poor choice for helping us to ”let go” of the character.

    >I have to say, I find the quickie regenerations – Eccleston to Tennant, Jacobi to Simm – to be unusual in their treatment of the process as ?same guy, new face?.

Both had their reasons for being that way, of course. A catchphrase or two aside, RTD wrote nine and ten more or less the same, at least early on – he wanted the Rose relationship to be maintained, and it often feels like he?d really have preferred to have had one Doctor all the way through his run (that being Tennant). And once The Master was back, big and bad, it was a case of ?grab the TARDIS controls and leg it? – the character?s just been through one personality change, another so soon would be painful to write.

A lot of the trauma of this regeneration had to do with the fact that Doc 10 simply likes being the 10th
    Doctor.

I like the idea of regeneration being presented as form of reincarnation.
The idea that the self consiousness remains but everything else around it changes.

I loved the fact that Doc 11 instantly snaps you out of all the melodrama of the death and the almost year and a half build up to it with ”Legs! I’ve Still Got Legs!” :)

And i guess the door is always left open for ten to appear again(sort of)as he is living happily ever after with rose in the parallel world, and the 50th anniversary is not that far away.

It’s good because it avoids the need to use time travel to bring him back.
He essentially is playing the same (but different) character. Doesn’t he have part of Donna’s personality in him?

Muz> And on that note why didn?t the exact same regeneration process crash the TARDIS last time round if it did here? Oh well. Nitpicking. Loved it.

Possibly doc 10 was doing all he could to hold of the regeneration even as it was happening (i don’t want to go!) making it paticularly violent.

Andrew>(I don?t expect the Time Lords to be dumped again. Now they?re back, they?re back – leaving the Whoniverse as RTD found it.)

Well, beutiful episode, i was a mess at the end, but as it happens i was right about the timelords. I genuinley hoped i was wrong and they would be back permanenley.

My theory is that The ‘Doc 10 likes being 10 and doesn’t want to regenerate/seeing it as dying’ storyline is a sort of meta in reference to the publics reluctance to let tennant go and accept a new face.

I liked the fact that it was the departing Eccleston who says goodbye and the new guy Tennant who remindes/reassures us that ‘it’s still me, i haven’t gone anywhere/ died ect ect.’

    Hoping they do that here.

Andrew >Ah well, at least we?re having two very different interpretations as to what that clip gives away. (I don?t expect the Time Lords to be dumped again. Now they?re back, they?re back – leaving the Whoniverse as RTD found it.)

I really do hope so, and i think i .might’ve. worked out what the knocking in the masters head actually is now, based on the clip and the preview of part II

I’m still no wiser as to what on earth the four knocks for the Doctor is though.

And hats of to the casting of Timothy Dalton as a timelord, which was frankly a masterstroke. I got chills listening to his speech at the end.

Andrew >I actually regret watching that. Not often I feel that way – and it?s from the start of the main ep, so it?s hardly secret stuff – but it gives you an awful lot in a short time. If you?ve not seen it yet, I recommend not doing.

I’ve seen it and i concur, I’m just hoping that RTD doesn’t treat the timelords like the other end of season baddies and are brought back only to be conviniently got rid off in 45 mins.

After watching that clip, i’m not keeping my hopes up.

    >Off-screen deaths. They never take.

True. I have an odd image (probably miles off) of the Doctor turning up in harriet jones’ flat and saving her after the screen goes fuzzy.

I’m sure CE’s Doctor made a comment about HJ leading britain into a golden age, that implied that he’d seen it and was .possibly. a fixed point in time that Doc 10 altered.

I know it seems silly, but i wouldn’t put some sort of time-reset button off the cards for TEOT

This is RTD after all, not a critisism, just a theory.

    Karl
”Well it kind of does doesn?t it? Who isn?t like 24. It?s an established show that always needs to come back to a core set of rules. Yes over time those rules will change as the show needs to evolve to reflect it?s audience. Each Doctor is different anyway, so I can?t imagine Moffat intends to simply re-run over RTD stuff.”

Sorry, The 24 reference was a bit silly and sort of in jest.

I agree, i like to think the Doctor’s various experiences inform his mental state after each regeneration, i’d like to see a little bit of that darker nature/arrogance in Matt Smith. I think he could play that well.

After watching confidential i find it a bit silly that RTD seems to think you can only take the doctor down this different darker path at the end of his time, why? What’s wrong with taking the doctor down this sort of darker storyline direction more often? Has he not seen 24? Jack bower shooting old lady’s in the leg? Erm, maybe that’s an extreme example but you see the point

Just because he regenerates into matt smith doesn’t mean the reset button needs to be pushed and he’s back to good ol’ jovial doctor who follows the ‘rules of time’ (he owns a time machine, that’s sort of breaking the rules already) and everythings okay at the end. That’s silly, it would feel like a backward step after this.

Yes, i know they’ve done it before but i think they’ll want to keep it unique this time and maybe do it through some sort of dream sequence, or my personal favourite, DT looking in the mirror and seeing a quick glimpse of MS.

Well, everything really, since Matt Smith is playing the same character as DT, and he’d basically be meeting himself, i understand it could be explained through time travel and/or a dream sequence but it would feel a bit odd.

I liked the darker edge to the programme, but for me the end doesn’t quite sit right with me.
I know it was done to give jack a tortured soul/making tough choices edge, but for me it goes too far. Maybe that was the point, i’m certainly not ruling him out becoming a bad guy in the future because of this, at least for a time.

The only issue i had with series VIII is some of the jokes being over explained. But all in all, i enjoyed both, i think the problems with both were blown out of proportion because of the fact that both were the last series of Dwarf for 11 years.

I suspected kochanski would be killed off a few weeks ago when those two well made fan trailers for back to earth were put on you tube. one of them involed kochanski getting killed off, i only realised after that robert may have unintentionally gave away some of the plot when he understandably thought they were both genuine, they were brilliantly well put together after all.
