Is there anyway to turn the sounds off in game? Pretty sure I rubbed up against this with the last game, but I tend to listen to music on headphones whilst playing on the tube. Even with audio muted on phone, game audio seems to bypass and play through headphones along with music.

It’s not as though Red Dwarf hasn’t done this before, so it’s worth pondering whether the extended episodes of series 7 benefit from th extra material.

I for one really like the additional ending to Tikka, if only because it gives a rather neat explanation as to what happened to the curry and how they have more going forward.

There’s a joke in Starbugs cockpit in one of the other episodes that’s quite good, but otherwise the rest of the material can be taken or left.

I’d just worry that if Doug did get an extra 10 or 15mins it wouldn’t be used in the way we want it to be used. That’s to say, we wouldn’t get a nice exploration of plot or a satisfying ending, we’d just get more stuff thrown in the middle for the laughs.

Clare plays the Kochanski that Lister would actually fancy

Chloe plays the Kochanski that would be a navigation officer.

Maybe they are both two sides of the same personality and we only see them come out in certain situations … but I honestly can’t see Lister actually falling for the sort of Kochanski we see in Series VII … maybe VIII but there’s very little character to see of her in those episodes unless a “ooooh a woman” joke needs to be made.

Dax – it definitely works much better on first viewing. Although seeing it recorded and then seeing it broadcast a year later had me in stitches both times. But now it’s the deliver and the anticipation of knowing what is coming that gets me every time. Maybe not rolling on the floor laughing, but certainly giggling like a little girl.

The Moose gag, and the punch line with Cat guessing and Danny’s delivery was absolutely phenomenal.

I was in the audience for that, and you could tell every was excited to be there but a bit apprehensive for what we might get. When that scene happened, relatively early on in the recording, you could sort of feel the tension in the room lift as every burst out laughing and relax, knowing that the Red Dwarf everyone had been hoping for was back.

Sure Dave era will, for many, not live up to the first 36 … but man they have been giving it a pretty strong go.

Re Give and Take … I absolutely love the start, and I love how it concludes, but the 10min bit in the middle with Lister just sat in a hospital bed … the way it’s written and shot just feels like your typical audience sit-com and very undwarfy to me.

Other than that it is a cracking episode.

As for personal favourite moments … it’s hard to pick. Lister talking to his dad/himself is up there, as is the “jesus” – “yes” line in Lemons … although that had been spoiled for weeks in trailers.

I don’t think Lemon’s changes anything for anyone as it wasn’t really Jesus. It is possible that India gets the bag earlier than they would have done, but it’s also possible that the Jesus we see invented the bag all along due to being kidnapped by future space bums.

Twentica I had forgotten about. They never fix the timeline do they, so presumably Earth history from their point of view has always had a prohibition on technology in the mid 20th century?

What bothers me about that joke is that they have clearly taken bits from different takes and stitched them together to make one long gag.

Next time you watch it look at Cat’s hand movements. He does the same thing from 3 different angles that looks like it’s taken from the last “margh” of each take, a kind of fed up this is so simple why is it taken Kryten so long to get it gesture.

I was living and working in the United States when three separate peoples opinions were combined into one. And it wasn’t until 2016 or 2017, on a return to the UK, when browsing the web one night, I came in the middle of this thread, clearly a science fiction thread, and at once to my horror and outrage saw what I thought was a rip off of three separate peoples opinions.

I was already reaching for the telephone to call my lawyer when something happened that made me laugh. And it was something that certainly wouldn’t have happened on another websites forum. SO I left the telephone where it was and I went on reading, and I think within a few moments I had got what the thread was, and I was laughing all the time.

For me, made it then and what continues to make this thread so appealing, is that at times it comes to close to my opinion, even if it is three separate peoples opinions combined into one and so delightfully makes a mockery of the kinds of opinions I have. I sometimes wish we could combine different opinions all the time.

Maybe they are only able to change appearance at will when the person observing them wants to see their true form.

They likely have an instinct which prevents them from revealing who/what they are as a self preservation thing as well as completing their purpose of providing pleasure.

It’s only when the crew all realise the truth that their desire to be pleasures wears off, and is over written by the desire to see Camille’s true form. Kryten’s is stronger than most as he still likes Camille regardless of form, so she is able to change for him and the rest of the crew can see it.

So perhaps the condition Camille’s husband is curing is that initial instinct to appear as the person who is observing them wants to see, allowing them to change at will for anyone regardless of those people’s desires.

Plex is usually pretty good with figuring things out, though does need some help from time to time. What I can’t fathom though is why it can’t distinguish between Classic and NuWho. I know it’s pulling data from elsewhere but looking at the complaints about it you’d have thought they’d have come up with a fix for it by now.

Seb – partly yes. If you don’t know the references, you’re missing out. More so than with Casablanca / Camille I think.

You don’t need to have seen Casablanca to find Camille funny, it stands on its own merits, BTE does kind of rather require some knowledge of Blade Runner … especially the Kochanski bit, but plenty of other references to. Part of the enjoyment of BTE I’m sure is joining in with the little in jokes and getting giddy/excited etc for being able to pick them out. If nothing else then just understanding them and why they are important or exist at all.

I’ve only seen Blade Runner twice (actually don’t hold it in such a high regard as others do) so I’m only somewhat vaguely aware of what is being referenced.

I can never remember what Kochanski’s counter parts role is. I just know its a reference to a character in Blade Runner. I don’t really know why she looks the way she does or why she is important other than Lister lusts after her.

Same with Cat’s little squid models. I’m aware this is a Blade Runner reference, and I somewhat remember Almos’ character (doing something similar) – but I don’t understand why, what the connection is or the relevence. I’m sure if I did then Cat making them and leaving them everywhere would make more sense.

Not really knowing Blade Runner that well … but knowing BTE is heavily influenced by it gives me this feeling of missing out that I don’t get with Camille because the episodes stands on its own a lot better. In fact the only direct reference I’m aware of and get in Camille is the “always have Paris/Parrots” line, and thats partly because its somewhat within the public consciousness as a pop culture reference.

But, having said all that, I still enjoy BTE, for it’s exploration of character and for what it does for the show. I just don’t share in the in jokes because I don’t know Blade Runner well enough.

@Ben – I quite like BTE but I think there are differences between BTE and Camille, or even DNA which riffs on a lot of different movie ideas.

it’s the setting and the way it is parodied. i.e. Camille parodies Casablanca but with Red Dwarf’s setting. And it riffs on many love storylines that have excited prior to and after Casablanca in different forms.

BTE feels much more like a homage and re-make of sorts of Blade Runner than a straight up parody. It removes the crew from their ship, puts them in a completely different world, and then just lifts the Blade Runner story (which I feel is more unique than Casablanca) and tells it with its own characters.

Not to mention BTE feels like it is played more for drama than comedy, where as Camille could almost be said to be gently mocking Casablanca as every line, every situation is for comedic purposes.

That maybe why people view them differently, and are able to accept one over the other.

I noticed last night for time he first time the awesome covers Plex has for RE. Basically the DVD cover but just the background in the colour of the respective case and the logo. None of the other text or images. Nice and simplified. Looks really cool

Back in 2009 in the 24hrs leading up to the first transmission of BTE pt1 I engaged in a Rad marathon over on the TOS chat room. It was bloody brilliant, and lots of people joined in, with some dipping in and out as they had work and such.

But we got through every episode to that point in about 24hours. I think we only stopped for 30mins at one point to allow people to freshen up, get a proper meal rather than just eating snacks etc.

And yes by the end of it, I at least was really tired. The hardest part to get through was series 7, because you’re 16+ hours in and hardly anything is making your laugh. Series 8, as crap as it was, was a welcome relief from that 4hr dark hole and livened us all up a bit. Plus we knew we were then mere hours from BTE and New Red Dwarf.

After getting over that hump I was wide awake and the sorely disappointed by what that first ep of BTE delivered. I immediately met some mates, went and got a curry and had a few beers before collapsing into bed a few hours later having been awake for around 36hours.

Fun times.

Having watched the first episode, it’s pretty solid sci-fi, Star Trek-esque, with some pretty terrible jokes.

I actually really enjoyed it, the humour is broad but it lives things up where Star Trek can sometimes feels a little stuffy, but the writing was fairly strong, decent concept, really really good SFX, liked the story.

If the rest of the series is on par with this episode it’ll be worth following.

Are you thinking of the shot where it’s looking up at the landing bay from a 90 degree angle, Starbug flys up the side of Red Dwarf then levels out by doing a sharp turn and flys into the bay?

If so, that is a reeeealy odd shot. And I think it’s because it’s composed of two different shots.

That angle is used earlier in the series showing something I can’t remember now fly directly into the bay. They’ve then reused it and seemingly superimposed Starbug on top flying at a weird angle.

Granted space doesn’t have any up or down, but I can’t see why anyone would approach the landing bay at that angle so close to the ship.

Yeah I overlook it fine, and actually I really really really love the model and the shots they are able to get with it. Just that scoop jars a little as it just isn’t right. But hey ho.

Don’t think the nose is too big though. It is bigger, but it fits in better than the scoop does.

I wouldn’t be surprised if at some point in the future we eat a Dave era box set with new extras and commentaries.

That said, Doug said last year he was working on something for series 11 commentaries that never come to fruition. We speculated at the time that they might be done in the form of downloadable audio files but that hasn’t seemed to have happened.

It’s be great to get commentaries at some point, but on a DVD so soon after it’s filmed might be a bit boring.

The great thing about S01-08 was that years (over a decade in some instances) has passed since filming, so it was nostalgic for the actors and gave us some great stories. Recording a few months after wouldnlikely give us a lot of “well, I remember doing this last year” – just going through the motions a bit.

Doug and Richard would be he best person to do a commentary as we’d get some nice production details. But it’d be a bit pointless for series 10 as they spilled all in the ‘We’re Smegged’ documentary
