As much as I adore Valve and the Half-Life games, they do have a habit of winding me up when it comes to release schedules. There always seems to be some sort of excuse for everything being a year late (Half-Life 1 has a big engine rewrite and Half-Life 2 was stolen so the security had to be beefed up) which could well be valid, but still. I guess once you’re sta down playing the latest release, you couldn’t give a shit about how late it is, cos it’s just so damn good.

But these episodes are annoying me. the fact that they’re acting as ‘Half-Life 3’ might be believable if they weren’t fucking called Half-Life 2: Episode 1 etc. It’s clearly a massive trackback, when they realised that creating extra HL2 content as well as a new game was going to be too much for the slowest developers outside of 3D Realms.

Series 1 and 2 sets cost the same as the series III sets onwards.

Ad for the topic… I think I prefer the later sets more. Series 1 and 2 do a great job of giving the atmosphere of a dank, life sapping, procedural mining ship, but the later inventiveness of Mel Bibby manages to give a much nicer contrast with nice, clean Officer’s Quarters and some brilliant dank and dark engine rooms and the like.

That and series 1 and 2 *is* too gray.

Actually, I’ve been thinking about all this a bit recently, and I think it’d make a great topic for a DwarfCast discussion forum. I think we have a decent split between us… one for the next time we’re all together, anyway.

I’m starting to appreciate series VII more and more these days. the thing I like about it is that it *is* different and it’s not nearly as funny as what came before it… but crucially, it feels like it’s succeeding in what it’s trying to do. Series VIII, form start to finish, feels like a failed attempt to recapture old glories.

VII is far more honest and far easier to accept, for me.

I do agree with Arlene on this one – VIII certainly has its decent jokes (and it’s a series that’s oft quoted round these part, surprisingly, although that can often be in an ironic way) it’s just that there’s seam of dismal shit running through the entire thing, and it makes it impossible for me to like.

Yeah, I reckon so. In theory, they’ll never be too old for the movie, because it’s a a complete re-boot, and so the age of the characters can be anything Doug needs. After all, Lister was a man in his 40s in the original pilot script for Red Dwarf.

The problem with doing it in 20 years time is that it’d be too weird having a different cast. Red Dwarf went on for too long with the current one to justify a recasting for the movie, unlike Hitch-Hikers. Once the cast reach a certain age, I can see all chance of a movie being totally null and void.

All but one of the Batman films have at least some merit, though. And, in general, they’re brilliant. I think Batman (sorr, I mean, ‘Mick’) has one of the most consistent records when it comes to movie adaptations.
