Looking forward to the series. Haven’t decided yet if I want to watch Twentica on Sept. 15 or wait until its premiere on my birthday to do so, but I suspect I’ll probably cave and watch it early so I can react in real time with a lot of other fans.

On the point of making the characters do mid-series homework (the overall series that is, not a single series – or as we Americans call it, a season) to prep for this one, I’m not sure if that’s ideal, or a potential mistake. I suppose “pantomimey” may be a thing in XI, not having seen it; I only noticed it really once in Series X with Chris and his “Shakespeare is OVER!” bit. But there’s a difference between saying “wish it weren’t pantomimey” and “these characters should act like they did 20 years and five seasons ago.” Yes, there are personality traits an adult always maintains, but other things can change, like interpersonal relationships or reactions (i.e., I’m a lot more chill about certain things in my mid-40s than I was when I was 22, which is incidentally when I began watching Red Dwarf). Hell, there are changes the characters exhibit from Series 1 to Series 6, that could make some moments in 6 look pantomimey to someone who really liked Series 1-2, I suppose.

No, by “chemistry,” you might “they play off each other well” or you can mean “they seem to want to fuck.” Some fans who thought Smith and Coleman had the latter are pretty upset at the lack of it between her and Capaldi. I’m good with it; I think they have the former just fine, though.

That would def cause a problem, since I’ve counted the switches to help me keep track on the DVD watch before; they’re about equally childish in the theater. Thanks for answering.

At least he’s better than Harvey Korman at the grin thing. There are a number of times he sort of seems to turn amusement into Rimmer’s trademark irritation (although one notable time he couldn’t just channel anger was “Emohawk” during Danny’s speech about preparing to help save Lister and Kryten – “Ace” is clearly fighting off a guffaw).

Did your version of the rewatch (and the original, I guess) have the extended “black card” scene with Lister and the cake and painting an H on his forehead? I understand that’s much shorter in the remastered version ….?

What’s even more remarkable is how well early Chris and Craig work off of each other given they reportedly did not get on very well. Or maybe that just fed the mug-hogging competition and made it funnier. Probably that.

When Lister insulted a superior officer and wasn’t reprimanded properly, I knew something wasn’t kosher. Then everybody died, and I thought, “welp, that’s it, show.”

    “Yes.”

I tweeted the video to someone yesterday with only a humorous “I don’t even know, LOL” and I guess the band gets Google alerts for their name, because shortly after, they retweeted me. Since it gave me the opportunity, I asked about the blackface and where they were from, and explained in the US it’s considered offensive (and asked if it was even makeup anyway). The guy said they’re from Andalucia and his producer played Cat because he resembles him. He said the makeup artist “just put his skin a little darker” on the producer because he’s Latin, and said it’s not offensive, “it’s just performing.”

So there you go – I’m not doing a full “20/20” investigative report to verify his cultural claims, but he did address my questions quickly and pleasantly. And on Twitter, where there’s not much room to explain much. For whatever that’s worth. :-D

I don’t know where this band is from. But I suspect there are more countries than not where blackface isn’t seen as bad, where they don’t have the history the US and UK do with African slavery. If they’re neither British nor American, maybe they don’t think it’s offensive?

I still want to know what the fuck I watched …

    When did Rimmer become Palpatine?
