But could there have been one more link after Behind the Beat, just an outro or whatever, before handing back to regular BBC Two continuity. Just checked the paperwork – Danny isn’t in Behind the Beat at all (and it lists every single item). More to the point, there’s also no little link played by pres at the end either – Behind the Beat just went straight into a trail for Gary Shandling’s Show. March 28, 2023 at 8:39 pm in reply to: Weirdest Audience Reactions #283556 John HoareParticipant Going to guess this won’t be written on G&T, but maybe Dirty Feed. As I recall, I started planning that piece, and then stopped because I *couldn’t* bloody hear the repeated bits of sweetened laughter. It’s not that I didn’t think they existed – Moonlight’s video proves that – just that I couldn’t hear them. Because of that, I lost confidence I could ever write it properly, and gave up. Don’t think I’ve changed my opinion on that in seven years, either… December 6, 2019 at 4:54 pm in reply to: Dirty Feed #256537 John HoareParticipant A four part series about the origin of Fawlty Towers… although not everything is quite as it first seems. http://www.dirtyfeed.org/tag/fawlty-at-large/?order=asc October 3, 2019 at 4:52 pm in reply to: Life On Mars/Ashes To Ashes complete box set uploaded to BBC iPlayer #254745 John HoareParticipant I’ve been meaning to write a comprehensive article answering that question for years. Now might be my chance. September 8, 2019 at 11:37 am in reply to: Dirty Feed #253798 John HoareParticipant A ridiculous article about Are You Being Served?, which easily matches my most ludicrous pieces about Red Dwarf. http://www.dirtyfeed.org/2019/09/beyond-grace-brothers/ September 8, 2019 at 11:35 am in reply to: The Loss of TOS #253797 John HoareParticipant Loading here! A script-to-scene analysis of one of the best episodes of KYTV, ‘Challenge Anna’: http://www.dirtyfeed.org/2019/07/kytv-challenge-anna/ Look, I spared you all my Shangri-Las piece from earlier in the year, so BE GRATEFUL. June 6, 2019 at 4:35 pm in reply to: Girl With A Crazy Dick Sucking Problem #250340 John HoareParticipant I swear, sometimes I wish I’d never launched this forum. May 21, 2019 at 5:26 pm in reply to: What dream would you be mortified to have been recorded on the dream recorder #249441 John HoareParticipant Ditto. April 26, 2019 at 10:33 am in reply to: Avenue 5 – Armando Iannucci 'space comedy' gets greenlit at HBO #248185 John HoareParticipant I don’t think I ever heard about this. What did he say? A certain Seb Patrick went to a Q&A with Armando Iannucci, and he said he didn’t really like Red Dwarf. I’m sure he talked about it on here, but I’m buggered if I can find the thread now. April 23, 2019 at 6:08 am in reply to: Avenue 5 – Armando Iannucci 'space comedy' gets greenlit at HBO #248094 John HoareParticipant The fascinating thing about this is that Iannucci has gone on record before about his distaste for Red Dwarf. It’ll be interesting to see what his version of a space sitcom is, and how it differs. April 14, 2019 at 11:00 pm in reply to: COKE ADDS LIFE! (Pepsi would be *buried*) #247678 John HoareParticipant Some lovely jingles, though. April 11, 2019 at 8:43 pm in reply to: Almost XIII news #247485 John HoareParticipant I think once you get into all this area, I realise… I don’t really *need* to see any more of the Dwarfers. I have no appetite for any of this stuff at all, in the same way that I don’t listen to Doctor Who Big Finish stuff either. I have too much other shit I’ll never get round to listening to first. Which is not a reason not to make any of that stuff, of course. This is about my limits, not the show’s. March 30, 2019 at 3:19 pm in reply to: Six of the Best Part 2 #246839 John HoareParticipant THIS IS FUN. I am going to entirely change the rules as I think a Dave-only release would be interesting (and I don’t think they’d pick one episode of BTE), so feel free to ignore this if deemed not in the spirit of the thread: Lemons The Beginning Twentica Officer Rimmer M-Corp Skipper That’s kind of meant to be a balanced, “clearly this was meant to be a big episode” kind of list. If it was my personal list, I might be temped to change Twentica for Krysis, and Skipper for Mechocracy. January 25, 2019 at 2:14 pm in reply to: At what point do the hullucinations start in Back to Reality? #243256 John HoareParticipant Also, I’d never really considered it before but Back To Reality’s idea of being pulled into a fantasy world so smoothly that you’re not aware of the transition is pretty similar to how Better Than Life is handled in the novels, isn’t it? I touch on this a little here. Rob and Doug have been doing this as far back as the original Cliche series: Better Than Reality January 18, 2019 at 1:51 pm in reply to: How many times have you watched the episodes? #242800 John HoareParticipant 1-VI is *really* tricky. I really did watch them endlessly, but I can’t put a number on it. Definitely more than 20, probably less than 200. VII and VIII I watched a bit at the time (all recorded off-air on VHS), and then… stopped. I haven’t watched any of them except for prepping for a DwarfCast in years. BTE: I saw it at the time. Never really gone back to rewatch. I can’t face it. X and XI roughly three times: once on TX, once to prep for the initial DwarfCast, and once to prep for the Retrospective DwarfCast. XII is only twice, because we haven’t done the Retrospective DwarfCast yet. Even the better episodes, I just don’t feel like rewatching. I don’t really do that with much TV these days, to be fair. My lifestyle doesn’t support rewatching the way it used to. I watched Lemons and M-Corp a little more than that, as I had to write the reviews. December 26, 2018 at 11:20 am in reply to: Dirty Feed #240991 John HoareParticipant RELATABLE CONTENT TIME: http://www.dirtyfeed.org/2018/12/6-times-your-favourite-tv-shows-jumped-the-shark/ December 3, 2018 at 12:50 pm in reply to: Bias, Corruption & Coercion: Why The BBC Must Be Denationalised #239396 John HoareParticipant No. October 31, 2018 at 2:28 pm in reply to: Dirty Feed #238669 John HoareParticipant Ah, thank you! Definitely worth getting the DVDs – what’s especially interesting is how little of it is topical comedy. It’s mainly just an extremely amusing office sitcom. I’ve never read the book, but I should try it after I’ve finished my rewatch. I seem to recall it’s based around an unmade script for a DTDD film… October 31, 2018 at 11:14 am in reply to: Dirty Feed #238665 John HoareParticipant Something I wrote about Drop the Dead Donkey’s unbroadcast pilot: http://www.dirtyfeed.org/2018/10/drop-the-dead-donkey-the-unbroadcast-pilot/ October 21, 2018 at 3:14 am in reply to: Anyone got a link to fanfic? #238256 John HoareParticipant https://web.archive.org/web/20080920080733/http://www.reddwarf.nildram.co.uk/txt/fanfic/kryten.htm October 2, 2018 at 7:12 am in reply to: BBC Two – new idents #237744 John HoareParticipant Didn’t BBC 2 also have those fucking terrifying idents of a bloke running through the woods being chased by soldiers and dogs? They did indeed. Very expensive-looking, and worked brilliantly before dramas and the like. They came in during the 2007 rebrand… and were withdrawn in 2009. Such a waste. They should have run for years. September 28, 2018 at 2:51 pm in reply to: What's the most you've laughed at Red Dwarf? #237578 John HoareParticipant “I need it to turn the lights on and off” in Legion had me rolling around the floor in absolute hysterics. September 28, 2018 at 2:49 pm in reply to: BBC Two – new idents #237577 John HoareParticipant As I understand it, Dave, when they brought back these idents in 2014, they chose only to bring some of them back, hence why the one where the 2 has steam coming off it and the shard of metal weren’t seen in the montage. Yes indeed. The goodbye was to that particular 2 shape as a concept, but also a goodbye to the *current* set of 2s in use (at least on BBC Two network – Northern Ireland had a wider selection). It might have been nice to include a few others, but at seven and a half minutes the montage was probably long enough, and I wanted to give them a bit of time to play, rather than moving on after five seconds or so. I’m glad people enjoyed it. I directed the final montage, but plenty of other people were involved in getting it to screen too, and the announcer Beccy wrote a lovely introduction for the beginning. FWIW, I am of course biased, but I think the new look is absolutely stunning. I love it to bits. In many ways, it’s more like the original 1991 set than the later, more action-packed idents which came after it. Thank you. I’ve been meaning to write about Chance in a Million for ages – by rights, we should have covered it on G&T as soon as the DVD came out… Meanwhile, I just wrote this about the churn of television: http://www.dirtyfeed.org/2018/06/the-churn/ (Please note, Westworld fans – at no point in this article do I say that Star Trek: Voyager is better than Westworld. A skim-reading of it might suggest I do say that, but in fact I do not.) April 5, 2018 at 12:52 pm in reply to: Dirty Feed #230241 John HoareParticipant Ah, thanks Ben! I really appreciate it. I’m expecting less feedback at the moment anyway, on here at least, because I’ve drifted away from writing about sitcoms. I must rectify that… April 3, 2018 at 8:36 pm in reply to: Dirty Feed #230136 John HoareParticipant Something fun about an early version of the famous letter in The Breakfast Club: http://www.dirtyfeed.org/2018/04/sincerely-yours-the-breakfast-club/ March 26, 2018 at 9:36 pm in reply to: ….Comedian found GUILTY of causing offence! #229936 John HoareParticipant I have just read some more of this thread and I can’t say I enjoyed it. They were weird at the time, and they’re weirder now. October 3, 2017 at 2:35 pm in reply to: Old YouTube competition vid where bloke drives to stone circle to moan about VII #222468 John HoareParticipant GAH WHAT THE VIDEO HAS BEEN REMOVED THIS IS AGAINST MY PRINCIPLES AND EVERYBODY SHOULD FOLLOW MY PRINCIPLES September 24, 2017 at 8:16 am in reply to: Dirty Feed #221829 John HoareParticipant It’s been a while since I wrote anything on Dirty Feed which seemed suitable to let people know about on here, but I’ve finally come up with something. On one of Trev and Simon’s funniest and rudest jokes… and how it was censored for video release: http://www.dirtyfeed.org/2017/09/a-public-service-announcement-on-trev-and-simon/ September 15, 2017 at 12:41 am in reply to: "There wouldn't have been a Series 6, 7 or 8…" #221303 John HoareParticipant Yeah, I hadn’t thought of all that shit. Fuck that reality, I’ll stick with this one. Apropos of nothing, here’s the stage direction for our first view of Daphne in the pilot script: FRASIER OPENS THE DOOR TO REVEAL DAPHNE MOON. AN ENGLISH WORKING CLASS WOMAN IN HER MID TO LATE TWENTIES. AT THIS MOMENT, SHE IS REACHING INTO HER BLOUSE AND ADJUSTING HER BRA. “AT THIS MOMENT” makes me laugh a lot. September 14, 2017 at 3:04 am in reply to: "There wouldn't have been a Series 6, 7 or 8…" #221276 John HoareParticipant I seem to recall me and Ian having EXACTLY this thought experiment a while back. But this was before BTE, which means it’s a whole different ballgame now. Personally, I couldn’t give up VI… but I’d sure as hell give up anything past that for the chance of a brilliant Red Dwarf USA. Which, given the right tweaks and the right creative team, could have been marvellous. September 5, 2017 at 1:07 pm in reply to: What if Channel 5 produced Red Dwarf? #221043 John HoareParticipant If you’re good, you calmly assess the situation and get the channel back on air as quickly as possible. If you’re bad, you yell FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK and wait for someone to rush in and save you. I hopefully do the former… these days.
