I loved the mashup of the two opening themes.

At least they got the spine the right way around.

shame about the words “Red Dwarf” and “The Comic”, though.

Yeah, I would agree with that.

I must admit I found Morrisey a little unconvincing at times but it might be because I know too much of his other work… I find it much easier to suspend disbelief if all the actors are new to me!

    I’ve now finished Tip Toe.

Last episode was just as tough and affecting to watch as I expected, however I thought it was let down a bit by how unrealistic the banter between the straight mob members seemed. Are blokey “football hooligan” blokes really pretending to hump the most effeminate member at every opportunity and instantly live-streaming it? I mean, I don’t hang out in those groups so I could be wrong but they felt like cartoon characters.

The ending monologue about how acceptance is being rolled back with every moving of the goalposts and every removal of a flag hit home here, though, in a town where our Reform-controlled council have just ordered the take-down of all Pride displays, of all reference to Pride on social media and the cancellation of all associated events.

Not even going to bother to edit that. I have time.

This is a book and is also real life but I was reading about Moscow’s historical intelligence operations where they would send spies to spy on people but then also needed spies to spy on those spies and then further spies to spy on THOSE spies until they needed, like, 400 million people and I thought that sounded very Grant Maylor.

Were they printed in BTL? I’m almost certain those are the drawings I mentioned seeing.

Added an updated Starbug to the bare wall in my childhood bedroom…

… messed up the perspective on the rear legs but never mind.

I still have the last episode to go but I don’t think you’ve spoiled anything knowing how many warnings I’ve seen about it being a tough watch (plus the glimpses of that scene). 😅

I don’t watch Doctor Who so may I instead take a moment to say how bloody brilliant his ‘Tip Toe’ on Channel 4 is?

I’ve been trying to get a reprint collection of the Smegazine strips off the ground for years with no luck. Through my Transformers and Doctor Who work, I’d managed to get a few contacts rolling at IDW Publishing on the US, and BBC Books (as it was back in the day) and Titan Publishing. I’d pitched up various idea for straight reprints, and reprints with new material in the back, and other variations starting back in 2010. There was always the consensus of “This is a nice idea – there’s no audience to justify the effort”. Very frustrating.

It’s also a rights nightmare. I’d first approached Rebellion. Fleetway Editions originally published the mag, and they were bought out by Egmont and eventually the bulk of their back catalogue ended up at Rebellion. But after talks with their rights department, they don’t have the Smegazine, and don’t know who does.
Egmont originally bought out Fleetway before carving up the back catalogue, and they don’t know anything about it either, which is a) frustrating again, and b) insane. Theres just no paper trail readily available.
When Rob and Doug had divided up the rights for RD, Rob could do comics, and I had a few meetings with him about it, but it seems even GNP don’t actually know what the dealio is. Rob was also very keen on making new comics, and not reprinting the old anyway, but my arguement was let’s use the old to help springboard the new. Anyways…
I assume the original editor Mike Butcher miiiight have an idea, but who knows. The original art files are likely gone/unobtainable/mostly destroyed/in private hands. So any collection would have to be high res scans of the published materials done with some care and attention…. Which also takes time and money. And which this half arsed effort is obviously NOT doing.

It’s something I’d LOVE to do, and edit the collection, but it’s just…. Ugh. Super bloody unlikely.

I’ve done some work for Rebellion on 2000AD as an artist and toyed with the idea of reaching out to both parties to see if some kind of crossover could be pitched to run in the prog several years back (not that I would ever have been put on such a thing, if it happened). It almost certainly would have been a “no” from Rebellion so I can’t say I regret not asking but such a shame more comics never ended up happening if there was willing.

If it’s not actively taking money away from the original artists, and the people doing it aren’t taking in a massive profit, and the quality is good, I have no ethical issues with it.

Same, but I’m not sure the third clause is being fulfilled here.

There was a fan-made Sonic The Comic graphic novel collection that began releasing a few years back collecting remastered scans of the pages that was obviously created with love, I don’t get that vibe from this.

I appreciate that it’s morally and legally wrong but is there anywhere else you can buy a quick and easily physical complication of these comic strips?
    I’m considering buying it

There’s a comment on the Reddit thread saying it’s reduced in size, making some of the word balloons difficult to read, just FYI.

Talking of which, with Rimmer gone why don’t they take the opportunity to boot up a new hologram of someone else for the back half of VII? It might have been nice to have George McIntyre around for a few episodes.

I would presume the crew’s hologram files are back on Red Dwarf and they only have the ability to remotely project an active personnel member from Starbug, not boot new ones.

They could have theoretically just booted up another Rimmer once the nanos rebuilt the ship, except they were captured as soon as they arrived.

So perhaps that’s what they did once ‘resurrected’ Rimmer was un-ressurected, just booted up another Rimmer which was updated via back-up from Starbug.

    See, it almost makes sense…!

Just seen painted versions of those Cozmic Scale Models from the other year and I’m not sure they’re any better tbh.

Despite Stoke Me a Clipper being one of the better episodes in VII, I don’t think having an Ace episode was a great way to get rid of Rimmer.
And there was me, putting it in my bottom 2 Series VII episodes, with the joint lowest score to boot, largely because of how bad I thought it was as a send off for Rimmer. I do feel like “he becomes an Ace” was a good idea for an eventual endpoint for Rimmer, but it just doesn’t work when done so suddenly. In Stoke he doesn’t really complete that journey, he’s just emotionally manipulated by Lister into pretending he has so he can fuck off as soon as possible.

This goes back to someone else’s comment that keeping Rimmer’s heroism from the ‘Out of Time’ cliffhanger as a key part of the resolution would have served to set up him becoming Ace. It’s weird they didn’t do that, in hindsight.

Yeah, they’re looking good and there are lots of subtle details that really nail the South Park visual style.

Were there Park-ified versions of the crew in BTL at some point? Seems to have stirred a memory.

Aside from the funeral vibe, I think they’re alright? It’s difficult to get a lot of detail right at a few inches tall.

It’d be another matter if they were an official release, mind.

I like how weirdly biblical this one feels, almost like it’s a depiction of Cloister The Stupid rather than Lister.

Weirdly, that Hattie face has been mirrored, which is probably why it doesn’t look like her because our faces aren’t fully symmetrical and the shadows etc don’t sit right.

AI doesn’t do that, this is a manual Photoshop.

Thanks… I actually had the pleasure of being in the audience for an Adam and Joe reunion podcast (the first one before they started doing them every Christmas, I think) where Adam played the longer one on the big screen and I got to hear a room full of people including celebs like Jonathan Ross and Edgar Wright laughing along, it was very special.

That’s a good start, prof. I used to really enjoy Macromedia Flash before they killed it, now I don’t have the time to animate but it’s lots of fun.

Here are a couple of Adam and Joe podcast clips I animated around a decade ago.

It was interesting to learn that the BBC were so worried about misleading people into thinking it was real that they disclaimed it upfront and included Written By credits, but some people did still think it was real.

Which is apparently the same with ‘War of The Worlds’ – I only learned last year that this whole thing about people thinking it was real and it causing widespread panic is tosh!

I remember seeing some of it live on the night, presumably my parents thought it would be Ok because Craig was on it and I loved Red Dwarf. Bad idea, I was 8.

There’s a bit where you see the ghostly figure standing against a wall in a room which lead to me being scared of the full-length curtain covering the kitchen door that could easily fit someone standing behind it. For YEARS I had to kick it every time I went in to make sure nobody was hiding there.

I heard an interview with Jon Hamm once where the host mentioned watching the show made him want to smoke and Hamm was genuinely quite upset by that.

I don’t drink. I’ve never enjoyed it and only ever got drunk out social pressure, which you sort of stop giving a crap about as you get older so I stopped around the age of 35.

…. except when I rewatch ‘Mad Men’ and get an urge to drink whiskey.
