I’ve provided colours for IDW’s Forgotten mini series (and the recently released Dr Who: Autopia, and the upcoming Room With A Deja Vu, and Cold Blooded War), but I’ve not had a chance to look at this one yet. As for the likeness stuff, the BBC aren’t super picky about likenesses, but on the other comics we were told to go back and redo some bits (stuff like the wrong number of buttons on the Doctor’s suit, adding pin stripes, that kind of stuff). Sam’s girlfriend was stated as being saved in the first episode of LOM, but it was never explained how. When Sam was tortured in hospital by an escaped psychiatric patient in series 2 of LOM, it was implied that Sam was pursuing the same guy in the past, but again never specified – more likely that Sam’s midn was just reacting and trying to make sense of the outside stimuli. The final episode of LOM fairly conclusively shows that the 1973 was all in Sam’s head – but saying that Sam awoke with his 1970’s sideburns back in 2007… He spoke of his experiences to Drake before killing himself… but is likely that maybe Sam never awoke from the coma? Thought he awoke, but didn’t… thereby by making the Ashes to Ashes present, 1981-82 setting, and Alex (and her coma in a coma situation) also part of Sam’s own mind? Hmm. Just mind-fucked meself. Stuke and Chaplin, well, I see the merits of both, but totally different takes on the character. WOuld have been very interesting to see Chaplin’s take on some of the insane rants Stuke had to bellow out… “And I’m blind man! Blind and drowning in filthy black pus, aaaaaaarrrgghhhh!” Within my family for a while there be deadpan shouts of “TEA”… that was quite fun. If anyone knows where I could get a replacement set, I’d be grateful… Ebay hasn’t been much good in my experience. Hell, if someone could point me toward some scans it’d be good… as Tonguetied said, there’s bog all online. In fact, if anyone could even lend me the mags, I’d scan the lot and set up an archive. I always enjoyed the comics (surprise, me being a fan of funny books). Not so much the two straight episodes adaptations of the first 6 or 7 months, but the original stuff was really distinctive. Nigel Kitching’s artwork in particular has always struck me as fantastic, and I loved the way the comics would mix concepts from the TV series with the novels. “Lister The God” was a great time travel tale that fleshed out the cat history in style, and there were some Jake Bullet noir-esque comics kicking about too. I also enjoyed the deadpan satire of just how bad Red Dwarf USA could have been. The grave scene works far better as a pre title sequence. I would have maybe tightened some of the diving bell stuff a wee bit more, but that’s me just being picky. It’s a shame there’s no real way around cutting out Katerina – as pretty as she is, she’s pretty much superfluous to the plot, but moving the ‘cliffhanger’ to her arrival works really well.
