Until very, very recently, I heard it as ‘Rasta Billy Skank’, as in the name of an artist/person.
It’s only within the last few months that it clicked it was ‘rastabilly’ like ‘rockabilly’. I think cos I saw it written somewhere.

At the time, I was pretty gutted. I was super-invested in Red Dwarf VI, and the cliffhanger ending properly messed with me. Having to wait three years back then felt like an eternity, and the delay caused by Rob and Doug splitting, and Craig getting arrested, and Chris wanting to leave too… man, it felt like the rug had been pulled out from under me. In many ways, it helped strengthen my character, and make me the hardened, rough’n’tough emotionless man-husk I am today.

I don’t know. As a kid, it was always my least favourite of Series IV, but I’ve never been able to isolate why. As I’ve grown older, I’ve found it funnier and funnier, and now it’s an episode I really enjoy.

Maybe it was because it was at the end of my off-broadcast-VHS tapes, so it took longer to to get to and got rewatched less? Maybe because even for Dwarf it was a bit more out-there and bizarre? I dunno. Maybe now we have a lot more Red Dwarf that is of much worse quality (looking square at you Series VIII), it raises Meltdown by comparison.

They were done by Bruno Elettori, who I gather also illustrated Enid Blyton book covers in the late 70’s and 80’s i think, and also at least one Seventh Doctor VHS cover.

But I’ve no idea where those RD covers are to now. They’d be fantastic to see without the text n stuff.

You’re presuming there that the script editor and producers AREN’T already doing this – they can offer advice as loud and judgmental as they like (Well, to a point – you’ve got to be professional and courteous with this stuff too), but it’s up to Doug to decide if he wants to heed that advice and implement it.

I do think Doug needs Someone who is willing to be abit more judgmental on his script though, like someone needs to be able to say Doug is this personality tuck idea really necessary to the plot? or do you think perhaps you should cut some stuff out of Officer Rimmer so you can give it an actual ending?

I don’t think Doug has bitten off more than he can chew. I think that Series X (and maaaaybe Back To Earth, but that production is a crazy anomaly within Red Dwarf anyway) was the only instance where things seemed to get out of hand, and even then the problems didn’t seem to be ‘Doug generated’ – he seemed to be putting out the fires rather than starting them. How much is Charles Armitage involved nowadays? He didn’t come across as particularly helpful in the Series X documentary, and he’s nowhere to be seen in the XI docs.

I think the current set-up where Baby Cow is now involved is a much better situation for everyone. You can also see how much more assured Doug’s direction has become, tracking from X, through Over To Bill, through XI/XII.

That said – Personally, I’d love to see Andy DeEmmony have another crack at the directorial whip, but that’s because I’ve been watching a lot of Red Dwarf VI again recently.

Amen. Series III through VI were my ‘first broadcasts’ that caught me around 11 to 14 years old, and had a staggering impact on my sense of humour, creativity, everything. I and II are folded in with that as I rapidly consumed them on VHS around the same time. VII and VIII caught me on a slightly waning interest and at a more critical time, as I was going through university and ‘growing up’ (I guess…?). By contrast BTE, X and XI are hitting me hard in the nostalgia stakes, and making me long for a simpler time in my life, so they too have a much different feel for me compared to the earlier series, but I’m really enjoying them.

I’d love to be able to go into the entire run fresh – watch I thru XI in one block, seeing each episode for the first time. That must be mindblowing, seeing a timelapse of Red Dwarf like that.

I love VI. It felt like a real shake up, losing Red Dwarf and Holly, new sets, the crew really forced together, working as an actual team. And the gags were good, and constant and consistent. The vis fx were superb, the direction felt fresh. Every aspect of production felt on top of it’s game, and it’s got a fucking KILLER ending.

Sure the running gags can get a bit tiresome, and the Cat’s burgeoning stupidity wasn’t good to see, but overall, the series is more hit than miss.

Yeah, it lacks a slower paced “character” episode. But that’s not to say there’s no character driven moments! Look at Out of Time, as the crew are at appalled at what they are destined to become. The banquet scene in Legion may be slapstick (albeit slapstick done well, as opposed to the blatant pantomime of VIII), but it’s got heaps of character.

Nah, I love VI. It’s an absolute fucking corker.

Yes, they absolutely should have continued Red Dwarf after VI, and I’m glad they did.

Although, yes, it has taken a very long time to recapture itself after all the upheaval that was wrought between VI and VII, but we’re now into the strongest run of episodes for a long time, and I’m glad we’ve got them and more to come.

Pete, enlighten me. What’s the process for getting ropey old 1987-era video into a HD-restored state? I mean, I know it’ll never be pin-sharp, etc etc, it’s old video and even if you had the first gen recordings you could only do so much. But what CAN you do to it to upscale it? I’m as interested in the tech specifics of this as I am actually seeing what you’ve done with it.

I spoke with Norman about this on the weekend, as I was lucky enough to guest at the Wales Comic Con. Shared a minibus journey with him to the venue, and he didn’t seem to know much about this show, it was something he’d worked on last year he said, but that was it, felt pretty dismissive of it to my mind.

Still, we had a good chat about other stuff, I avoided much Dwarf talk, but we spoke about Rik Mayall, Alan Rickman and Victoria Wood’s passing, and Norman’s interactions with them on various projects.

Yup Paul, parking on site at Pinewood. Pull into Pinewood, once you’re through the gate, there’s a miniroundabout, second exit, you’ll see a security guad, show him your ticket, and they’ll direct you to park in front of the Audience Marquee and portaloos. I got there for 4pm last time, didn’t have any issue getting in.
