In terms of Morose, PLEBIAN Atari 5200 games you non-genius smeggers play, I loved Pen the Pig, TTTE&F Engine Rescue, Land Ho! (A Christopher Columbus Game), Risk (Ed Note- I loved Rimmer’s beating Caldicutt at Risk at the beginning of Meltdown; <…> minus weirdness, Ass-Shitting-ness (…), and IP Crossover Bloodbath), and I had a nice Star Trek Board Game, even… Yes, that had full 720-degree movement (1080 degree reasoning…); – trivia cards, and a pretty Damned lovely Hexgrid on a blue space image board with Green Starting Hexes at the corners, that I used, first for Brikwars in 2001, then in 2017, then we all can gosh-darn-tooting use it in any RPG/Wargames… Stuff! Yes! … And I had ST:TNG; the Game of the Galaxies, which had planets with names from the classic Trek (mostly TNG), depicted with 1, sometimes 2 adjacent moons. It was nice and fit the show (compared to cheap licensing camel shit). Anyone else play those PC games? November 14, 2025 at 11:53 pm in reply to: Mundane observation dome #313489 MeteoParticipant I’ll always give a boost to original eras over revivals, whether it’s a TV show, discography or genre copycats, so even if I-VI isn’t mostly objectively best (which it probably is), it’s got the freshness and the classic look, atmosphere and nostalgia going for it that make even the weaker ones a luxuriously indulgent experience. I think my next poll ranking will reflect this actual love more unapologetically than feeling duty bound to rank some good Daves above the likes of Balance of Power – sorry, objectivity fans! We’ll die off one day. I once saw a top 10 on YouTube (can’t find it now) that was largely sensible but included Identity Within. They were probably showing off though. But then, I consider the first novel to be the single best Red Dwarf ‘thing,’ which would seem crazy to many (but benefits from the show existing for the imaginary performances). Non-coincidentally, I read it before I’d properly seen anything earlier than VI, so it was my first go around with those stories. Nostalgia and early exposure play a big part, but they can be overruled. Series VIII and especially VII should be nostalgic as hell for me, but I find most of them repellant, having problems with them at the time and disowning them before the DVD era (Cassandra’s still good though). Yeah I agree actually, IWCD is to me the best of Red Dwarf, and I read it after I’d seen the first six series a million times. It’s all the bits you love from the show expanded on and given more room, and with some great moments that wouldn’t have fit the tone of the show but are fantastic. Some high budget CGI adaptation with all the cast doing voices would be heaven. I have a bit of nostalgia for VII, because I remember being so excited when I heard about it happening after such a gap, and for the t-shirt with the skeletons on, and Radio Times covers, not so much for the episodes. I had the “Back From The Dead” T-Shirt; – found it again in 2017, and wore it for over two years, before somebody threw it out: November 13, 2025 at 2:34 am in reply to: Lines from something else that sound like they’re from Red Dwarf #313414 MeteoParticipant Supposedly brought about for a few decades by the Grand Nagus Zek out of fear of the “insane” anti-capitalistic Federation. The dramatic parts were better than anything Doug Naylor, John, Marco, Mel and Scabby wrote after 1998. Except those episodes I’mma forgetting about. August 19, 2025 at 7:18 pm in reply to: Favourite flight deck/ship bridge room #310131 MeteoParticipant Yeah, the X drive room is crap and makes no real sense. The later Dave era one I’ve generally seen as an updated version of the Science Room, the same one we see in III – V basically, where they do medical stuff, piloting things, and anything else that needs computers and sciencey brainbox stuff. One thing the bubble era did really well was dressing, lighting and shooting sets so they often looked different. In my head, the room where Lister fucks the Polymorph, the room at the start of DNA, the ‘so what is it?’ room, and the room with the triplicator are all different places with some similar looking fittings, it’s remarkable to think they’re all the same set. It makes the ship feel much bigger, like they’re using different rooms and decks for different purposes. In comparison, the XI – TPL science room looks and feels the same every time you see it. Yeah, I’m going with Bubble Era. Series VII Starbug was nice, big, dark and cinematic.
