I love the DC Star Trek comics. Shoehorning in dozens of issues between II & III where Saavik is Science Officer. And then even more issues between III & IV where Kirk commands the Excelsior and it ends with them going back into exile on Vulcan and Spock gets his mind wiped again to tie into the start of IV.

To be fair, I’ve enjoyed what I’ve seen so far of it. Fish out of Water Jewish Doctor from Manhattan finds himself pressganged into spending five years as a rural doctor in a small town in the wilds of Alaska when he’d rather be on a sunny Californian golf course. One of those shows that’s a perfect antidote for the stress of city life I’ve found.

The Smegazine ran an April Fool announcing that (I think) V or VI would be animated and that Camille would become a main character. So I guess Camille could comeback in a modified form – still shape-shifter but can choose what she looks like.

I think the VI Starbug just about works if you consider Cat and Lister’s sleeping quarters to be one multipurpose room – medical unit, science lab, AR Suite, Deep Sleep Chamber etc. Figuring out the engineering decks is a bit trickier.

As I understand it I think there’s two factors in play. The BBC Film Library and BBC Enterprises had conflicting views over who was archiving what. As both groups thought it was the responsibility of the other to archive certain programmes, both didn’t give a second thought to destroying their own copies.

Also, when the show was being made through the sixties and seventies, there was no idea of the coming video revolution of the 1980s or that this little show made to fill a slot between Grandstand and Jukebox Jury would run for almost a quarter of a century and have a massive effect on popular culture (to the point where the BBC, in 2002, were successfully able to argue in a court of law that they own the right to the Police Box design over Metropolitan Police off the back that it was more publically recognised as the TARDIS instead of a piece of Police equipment).

I keep meaning to check, but I think in pretty much every series, I – IV at least, the corridor outside the bunkroom changes.

In I it’s a grey corridor curving round and then in II it’s a wall of pipes and metal curving round. In III it’s the white crate walls with two corridors leading off at right angles, as seen in Warbofrog’s picture. Then IV comes around, and in Camille it’s a corridor made of the off-white archways used to enter the bunk room, but a panel is removed for all the other episodes in that series so there’s now a third corridor that leads directly into the archway. V I think is the same as IV, though.

The trade off I guess is the Officer’s Quarters have more amenities like a shower unit, a kitchenette and a bigger telly.

I always figured that it simply hadn’t crossed their minds to not share a room. It’s brought up in ‘Bodysnatcher’ when Lister points out that the ship is big enough for the two of them to live on different sides of it and not see each other for the rest of their lives, although he does invite Rimmer to pop round for ten minutes on Christmas.

Quite a subtle one, but I do like Rimmer’s talk about dying in ‘Kryten’. He tells Lister to back up his Captain Rimmer: Space Adventurer charade by getting him to tell the women how brave he is. And instead of saying he died a hero’s death or in valiant combat, his go to is he died and took the news well.
