Personally, I’m thrilled that Murray Gold’s returning (it might only be for the specials, for all we know). Theme arrangement aside, I couldn’t really take to Segun Akinola’s stuff (not that it stopped me buying the Soundtrack albums each year). However, I happily let Murray Gold’s DW soundtracks play away in the background when I’m doing nothing else.

Just double checked ‘Howard Goodall’ on Amazon Music – there’s only the ‘Piano Fantasies’ release on there, Red Dwarf-wise. Don’t know what’s happened to the others, off-hand.

As for the Doctor Who s10 OST – unlikely. It’s a licencing thing. I emailed SilvaScreen, who’ve released all the other albums, a couple of years ago, and got this reply:

Thanks for your email.

Unfortunately, we only know that the S10 soundtrack is not available for us to license from the BBC. Maybe it will be one day, but we have no news concerning it at the moment.

A couple of YouTube channels I regularly look in on do Father Ted reactions, so I’m enjoying a bit of a loose rewatch at the moment. I was in my late teens, and it’s as funny now as it ever was. I remember being at college when we heard Dermot had died, and we completely dumbfounded. The other thing ingrained in my memory from the time is the Daily Star’s horrific ‘Father Dead’ headline, which still disgusts me to this day.

I’ve always tended to look upon Ted as one of the last great ‘traditional’ studio sitcoms, before single camera became more popular. You just don’t get them like that anymore. Absolutely brilliant.

It’s A Wonderful Life is a festive must, and I only discovered it as a direct result of following the adventures of the Crimson short one. And, of course, having made myself familiar with the movie, the Bedford Falls plot of the Dwarf novels makes much more sense.

Had a nosey through the BBC’s Red Dwarf pages to check those last repeat airdates, and I can’t remember that series 2-VIII 2003/04 repeat run at all. Even odder that Series One wasn’t included. It seems that the only time that the original first series was ever repeated was just after midnight, every night of the week following Christmas in 2007.

Although that doesn’t include the Remastered series, of course. Now, the first three series, Remastered, were shown on BBC2. The End was shown in February 1998, but I can’t remember if the rest of the Remastered series followed immediately, or maybe a few months later (ie after everyone had bought the video releases).

So I checked the Beeb’s ‘All Programmes A-Z’ search  thinking that maybe Remastered had its own separate page, but no. So dunno about the last BBC airdates of those.

What does have a separate page of its own is the Radio version, ie the episodic edits of the audiobooks, last broadcast on Radio 4 Extra in 2012. That page features an interesting little interview with Chris, recorded in 2009.

Did Howard Goodall pick the music for Series VIII? I thought he was just credited for the theme tune, given the only original track in the series was the Blue Midget Dance. Seems like a serious waste of his talents to keep him around just to get him to choose which pre-existing songs to license, but maybe.

Howard Goodall has some Red Dwarf digital mini-albums on Amazon, one of which is Series VII score. So…
