    These sound like writing exercises…

The cast might now be under investigation regarding historic sex offences?

    Todhunter may have worn flares?

Kevin McNally will have been drafted in to recreate the lost episodes in front of sycophantic festival crowds.

There may have been a Soviet character? Or an American one. To reflect the space race.
Cat might have been descended from Leika, which would have made the similie jokes a bit more confusing.

Or it might have been modelled more closely on Steptoe & Son rather than Porridge.
Lister and Son. Both played by the same person, obviously. Someone like – I dunno – Kenny Lynch?
And Rimmer could have been more of an Alf Garnett character, calling Kochanski a silly moo, and calling Lister all sorts of horrible names that most of us will have forgotten about by now.

Not really a high/low, but halfway frames is a genuinely good idea.
It would brilliantly represent how fast/slow the meat of the story began.
Plus there might be one of someone bending over hilariously.

    How about high/low Visual FX.

High/low alternate character played by main cast member (catchy title!). Best for me is Chris’s Low Rimmer in Demons and Angels. Worst is Spanners or Padre from the start of Dimension Jump.

Cat. So we didn’t have to watch Can of Worms.

Or one of the nice vending machines. So if I was caught I could easily pretend I was lifting it up.

Alexei Sayle used to sniff Pot Noodles in his act, prior to the Young Ones. In relation to what, I don’t know.
Pot Noodles were a new thing in the late 70s, weren’t they, and probably considered pretty bizarre. Reconstituted vegetables and dust. A ripe target for alternative comedy.
Once Lister has got the big laugh out of them in Marooned, I suppose it was an easy decision to use them again in Demons & Angels.

Personally I really like them as I only ever had them when my family were camping, and so subsequently think of them as “a treat.”
My partner had some Naked Noodles yesterday (curry flavour) and didn’t even finish them… The middle class ponce!
(I finished them. They were lovely!)

I too encountered that glitch. I still have the game somewhere.
Another game I didn’t finish was the first South Park game. The one where you had to throw pissy snowballs.
Nowhere near as entertaining as the Meaning of Life game, but vexing all the same.
And then there was Batman Returns on the Lynx…

    All tie-ins, I just realise!

Not sure if that link is for my benefit but I’ll assume it is. Thanks! But I knew you meant the series.
The series is based on the film.
If you’ve not seen the film, I’d give it a whirl. You might enjoy it. It’s a western in the same way that Gunmen is a western. I.e. not really. And it inspired one of the old, brilliant Simpson’s episodes.

    Evangelical eh? No kidding.

Great point about the Silver Survey.
There’s definitely a split in “current fan opinion,” which is what makes these threads interesting.
Have you looked at the Male Top 10 vs the Female Top 10?
3 series VI for the men; 1 for the women.
Why did I bring that up? Bit sexist.

    >I introduced my girlfriend to the show [a few] years ago, and it was almost like watching it anew – I certainly laughed a lot more simply through the joy of her laughing. It’s an experience I’d strongly recommend.
    She HATED VI.

Same thing for me. I remember being almost ashamed that I used to like VI as much as I did when we watched it together. Now VI feels much more like a childhood crush.

Personally, until the BTE reboot, I think the show got worse with each series. Series I was my favourite, then II, etc. Now it seems to be getting better. Which is very positive.
Like a few people here, I didn’t notice how ‘middling’ series’ V and VI were (ironically) until recently either. They were great when I was an adolescent. Rapid one liners, big ideas, actiony sequences… gunge and smoke.
I still like those 2 series, but not based entirely on their merits.

Dude. As an opinion, it’s fair enough. Don’t watch what you don’t like.
In turn I suggested that you don’t read things you don’t like. As a kind of “joke”. However, you failed to see the irony (as only a fan of series VIII would do), and took it at total face value. You called it a silly argument. I agree. It is a silly argument. Ahhhhhhhhh.

By the way this has nothing to do with your not conforming to the views of the ‘holy club’, as you put it. You just seem like a bit of a git.

Exactly. And that was YOUR argument, you daft cunt. “If you don’t like it, don’t [read] it.”

I didn’t go to Twentica but Seb wrote that the street scene was pre recorded. Which accounts for it’s weird, stilted feel. E.g. when Lister looks at Rimmer for ages without saying anything in the car, while Rimmer pulls a funny face that the audience can’t see…

I sort of know that channel 4 don’t count online ratings when it comes to being recommissioned, but that knowledge isn’t based on a program that debuted online and sat there for a week before being shown on telly.
It’s mad they did that. Considering it’s not a show for young viewers but has fans of all ages.

Well done for watching and thinking about VIII in such detail. I didn’t bother to watch it all when it was originally broadcast.
It really does seem like Ronnie Barker’s original idea for Porridge. Written by a child.
