The first thing I thought about when I read this thread was the story from, I think the Companion?, when Craig complained to Rob and Doug about Lister being slobby – while eating a sausage dipped in ketchup he’d squirted onto the table or whatever it was. That really stuck with me.

I would level the same criticism at Father Ted, however. As good as it is, I can’t watch it on repeat.

I’m amid a Blackadder rewatch. Having not seen the first series for a while, and knowing it much less well than the other three, I was surprised to discover how okay it was. Some episodes are basically in the mould of later series, but he’s doing a funny voice. Plus! Because I’ve seen Bells a fucking load, when I got to it it felt like an anti-climax. But the feeling passed when I reached Head and Potato.

Fawlty Towers. The best episode is probably the first one, for me. But they are all great.
Aside from the casual racism they’re pretty much perfect.
Rimmer had a lot of Basil in him. The chip on his shoulder. Desperation for higher status and laughing at people he sees as being beneath him. The snobbery. The barely suppressed rage at those who actually have higher status. Trapped by circumstance. Guided by avarice. Tortured by misfortune and destroyed by himself.
Surrounded by people he hates, alone in space / Torquay.
Lister has a touch of Manuel in him.

Frankie Boyle’s books make me laugh a lot because they’re often just jokes from his stand up.

Novels, though. I laughed a lot reading Time For Bed by David Baddiel. I laughed a bit at Flann O’Brien’s The Third Policeman. Portnoy’s Complaint had lots of very funny moments. Catch 22 is funny.
I’ve not read any Jasper Fforde, but want to.
I’ve got a copy of the Finkler Question by Jacob Howardson to read, but don’t want to.
I liked reading the Gobbler by Adrian Edmondson.
Woody Allen’s short fiction is very funny.
I seem to remember The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie being good, too.

I really liked Armstrong & Miller on Channel 4.
“It’s going to piss down!” And “Chuffy, Chuffy, Chuffy” are worth the license fee alone. And there isn’t even a license fee!
Their podcast a few years ago (Time ghost) really underlined their snobbery and prejudice (before countless hours of kids TV, quiz shows and mad singing called them a hypocrite), so I imagine there is also an attack on Charles’s poetry in there. But I’ll let that off. Because “do some cancer research. You fucks!”
