Hey, real quick, can I disturb our regularly scheduled programing to talk about a Red dwarf nightmare I had last night? If it helps it was actually really scary and weird

There is a thread for it. But also we just sort of post wherever the hell we want around here.

Would’ve been a sweet nod to nostalgia for them each to have a bollock hanging out.

Christ. Thought it was elevator from Stasis Leak, low light low quality look had me guess Demons & Angels then I tried out Waiting for God. Finally got close with Beyond a Joke (just a random VII guess) then got it right but only from thinking it was a vent scene.

Was it ever really explained why original Red Dwarf was equipped with exactly two stasis booths? Since it presumably wasn’t for interstellar travel, but it seems unlikely they’d have that along just for punishment? Sounds extremely expensive to equip a ship with that in case someone misbehaves. Surely they’ve got a prison cell or two if you’ve just been a little nasty and can space you if you’ve been rea0 naughty. “Stasis” is a genuinely bizarre punishment (and may be an indication that Hollister never actually knew what he was doing as captain).

This line landed incredibly well for me sumply because I’m coming off a watch of all the Star Trek movies, in which they certainly do spend 10 straight films just sort of all falling about on the bridge.

    You’re thinking Trans-Atlantic.

Perhaps now’s a good time to mention that a mid-Atlantic and Transatlantic are both names for the same accent, but more importantly, whichever name you use that’s the one I believe Kryten’s closer to than Canadian. I mean, he doesn’t even say ‘sorey’.

Actually a valid point regarding callbacks as Cured features waxdroids

Were they wax droids in Cured? I thought Telford just hosed down the experimenting droids and gave them a wig.

A genuine question, but are there any bubble episodes that haven’t been pilfered for Doug’s Dwarf?

I’m sure there are several. Meltdown comes to mind, the only relations to it in Doug Dwarf I can think of at all are:

    – They roll dice in Samsara, just like in Rimmer’s Risk campaign.

    – Light bees are mentioned in Stoke Me a Clipper, Trojan, M-Corp, and The Promised Land.

    – Twentica’s “Pythagoras wasn’t much of a pilot”, seeing as how Pythagorus [sic] was in the episode.

    – Dolphy’s third appearance in Cured.

    – Göring gets a shout in Blue, although Meltdown is neither his first nor his last bubble mention.

    – Wax Droid Theme Park and All Droid Shopping Station both have droid as the second of four words.

I assume none of these are what you’re referring to. These were unreasonably fun to come up with, though.

Smega-Drive artefacting be damned, in the episode her uniform quite clearly says Barrington. This leaves one of three possibilities:

    – She is wearing the wrong uniform and Rimmer didn’t remark (unlikely, knowing Rimmer)

    – Rimmer called her by the wrong name and she didn’t correct him, likely out of fear (possible, but this reality’s Rimmer doesn’t seem characterized by other inhabitants as a nasty tyrant)

    – Her name is actually Parkinson Barrington. (my favorite)

His accent’s usually described as more Canadian

I’ve also grown up with Canadians my whole life. It fucking isn’t, and it is quite funny that everyone (including Robert) seems to think it is.

But his pronunciation is random sometimes, like when he says ‘minimum leezure facilities’ and ‘study it at your leshure’ within the same episode.

Strangely, this would be a reasonable, even common way to vary the pronunciation between those two uses of the word. Just watched it back and neither sounds particularly out of place.

Do British viewers ever flag up when Kryten calls Kochanski “mom” in VII? In Robert’s otherwise convincing Generically Kinda American Accent, the occasional massive slip like this sticks out like a sore thumb, but is it as clearly wrong to people who haven’t grown up around Americans?

    Surely the better ending:

    – It establishes earlier on that bio-printed organisms expire immediately upon fulfilling their purpose – even if printed improperly – when Captain Herring melts.

    – All Rimmers were explicitly printed to serve as officers under the command of Flight Lieutenant Rimmer.

    – Rimmer’s demotion should expire all these clones, including the Rimmonster. This is a better mechanic for convincing Rimmerwto demote himself as well.

Has this been brought up before? It feels like this was supposed to be the ending it built to and they maybe technically couldn’t make it work, or Doug just didn’t know what to write to end the episode after that?

    SANTASARA

The gang are baffled Christmas morning when they find that Kryten is the only one to have received a lump of coal in his stocking, the rest receiving gifts. Most generously of all, Lister has received forty years’ supply of curries, including five thousand bottles of curry sauce, seven hundred curry sandwiches, four hundred curry pastas, eighty-five hundred curry lagers, nine hundred curry toasts, four hundred curry pizzas, fifteen hundred curry teas, and a dwina curry. Suspicion heightens when the bullet-riddled body of Marlon Brando is found on G-Deck. A Kryten best guess concludes that Santa’s naughty and nice lists were reversed by Marlon Brando, knowing that Lister had to kill him, and in his kind and merciful heart he didn’t want Lister to suffer the consequences of his inevitable actions.

A post-credit scene shows Santa cackling evilly, swapping his own lists as he cocks his gun and aims it around the corner at Marlon Brando.

I realize that I’ve confused the ending of Thanks for the Memory with the ending of TNG:Clues, in which the conclusion is “we’ll just try again and do it better next time”, which I suppose is probably also the logical conclusion of letting the Dwarf episode spin for two more minutes. And still doesn’t make sense, how the fuck are you going to conceal two/five missing days as soon as you meet anybody else with a calendar (which will happen much sooner for the TNG crew. RD it might be til after Timeslides resets it all anyways)

If DNA had ended as abruptly as Samsara, then it would have ended at the reveal of tiny robo-Lister, leaving the audience to assume that of course if they have a tiny robo-Lister then victory is guaranteed.

Thanks for the Memory leaves me far, far more worried that they’re not in the clear. They’re just gonna do it better this time? What the hell does that mean?

It literally ends on Game Over.

It’s such a shit Game Over that it’s far easier to believe it’s just another trick of the game or silly episode text than to believe the game’s ended.

Perhaps the original crew only became dust due to the radiation.

Didn’t they become dust because mice ate them then immediately shit them into conveniently arranged piles? I suppose that was probably a joke, but funny enough to accept it as explanation for me

For those who don’t know – I’m sure it’s come up here before – the DVD copies of X were positively fucked in the frame rate conversion for the States and slowed down (I want to say 4%?). You can really tell, hell, the theme tune’s down about a pitch. This watch-through I put my foot down and said we’re watching it the tough way, streaming it to the tv from a certain website with a Tongan domain. This may be the first time I’ve watched it at the correct speeds.

    – I had hoped it would improve some scenes by just having slightly more natural pacing. I was still surprised the couple times I really felt that it did, most notably the ‘introducing the crew to Howard’ scene. I’ve never enjoyed touch-T and ‘hosed him down and gave him a hat’ as much as this time. Couldn’t tell ya more.

    – The slow version the characters have voices that damn near rumble the room, but most of the performances, especially Chris and Danny, were still lower than I thought they’d be compared to every other series. Maybe it is a series of all things low-end bass.
