    > What I wanted to get across was: this isn’t a case of “The Gay UK’s TV critic thought Timewave was good”, it’s a case of “The Gay UK happens to have a Red Dwarf fan as a regular writer” … But generally one expects TV reviews to be a little less biased than that.

Wait, doesn’t Ganymede & Titan also have long time Red Dwarf fans reviewing episodes? SHOCK! HORROR!

I demand to see the results of full and thorough inquest into the matter immediately.

    > Are we all being reasonable and coming to an agreement, then? That’s weird. Where’s Better Dead Than Smeg when you need him?

    Will that do?

“Remarkably, Timewave actually gained viewers, for a series-high so far of 723,000. This is the first time a mid-series episode of Red Dwarf has ever recorded higher figures than its series premiere”

I know it has become something of a cliche to say this, but placing constraints on someone can sometimes help improve the quality of their creative output. Doug is already both writing and directing his own shows now. How much more can he be unbridled?

The thing about things like the Blue Midget Dance, Reality Sucks, or even the Dibbley Skutters is that with them the show was at least trying to be fun.

Timewave is just no fun at all.

    > I hate to admit it, but the “Everybody’s dead” scene frustrates me. It could’ve been executed so much better … Especially “are you trying to tell me everybody’s dead?” which I would have preferred Craig Charles to deliver shell-shocked rather than like he’s thick and he’s only just worked out what Holly means

Is he being thick, or is he is being incredulous? Lister had only just come out of stasis, meaning that as far as he was concerned he had been speaking to Todhunter only moments before. You can only be shell shocked after the scale of the problem has sunk in. Temporally disoriented as he was I don’t think he had the time for that.

Not to mention that Holly’s “they’re dead Dave” speech is probably one of the most cultural iconic parts of the show. It crops up everywhere.

    > I don’t think solo- Doug has ever really nailed static scenes of just comedy dialogue, which have nothing to do with plot. (Compare Marooned to Duct Soup) and this episode kind of brings it to the fore … The opening scene does nothing for me.

I still think the Mineoply scenes are the best the Rimmer/Lister two hander Doug has given them in the Dave era. Also the best acting he has gotten out of Chris, with the possible exception of his little tantrum upon losing the game, but at least it is still little.

I grew up almost exclusively on VHS tapes and DVDs, and have almost never watched a show on broadcast as it was coming out. Which means that watching all of the episodes at once (or at least having full control of when I do watch them) is the norm for me. I do still have a communal viewing experience though because I almost exclusively watch television with a family member to bounce my thoughts with. I never watch alone.

The most noteworthy thing this has produced though is that I next to never watch new television and spend most of my time with older shows. I would much rather go back to watch a well regarded or significant series from the past that has slipped me by than try and follow the latest buzz that is going around on Twitter or whatever.

Browsing the internet one night, I came across this forum, clearly a Red Dwarf forum, and at once, to my horror and outrage, what I thought I saw was a bunch of intolerant cretins that go around and attack people. I was already reaching for my telephone to call to this girl (Sarah), when something happened to make me laugh. So I left the telephone where it was and went on posting. Within moments I had gotten what the forum was, and I was laughing all of the time. For me what continues to make this forum so appealing is that it is at times so close to a normal fan community and yet so delightfully makes such a mock of itself and the kind of people who post on it. I sometimes wish we could introduce some of that same wild ironic humour to other online fandoms as well.

Yeah, well, proper English spelling is one of my bugbears, growing up in a region with increasing Americanization of the language. The few years I went to a regular school were awful with all of the kids saying “Zee” instead of “Zed”.

This is Canada, damn it! Well, that was Canada. This is the internet. So I guess it does not really matter.

    BUT STILL DAMN IT!

Seb, at present the combining of three separate people’s opinions into one by other posters covers a quarter of the forum, while the amount combined by jawscvmcdia alone consists of small cluster of inane forum threads. I hardly think that we can be entirely absolved of blame on the combining of three separate people’s opinions into one front.

    > What’s Labor Day? Is it when everyone has to deny the Holocaust and make threats on the safety of Laura Kuennsberg?

You know, if you are going to post an inflammatory UK political comment, you can at least go to the trouble of using the British spelling of Labour with a “u”.

And apparently Arbour day is a big deal in Calgary, so I guess I am just a little bit too far north for it.
