    Knowing Me2, Knowing you?

Oh that joke was made about a week ago. Whoops.

in reply to: A Red Dwarf, Alan Partridge Crossover? #264090

    Er no.

    Love both of them though.

Chris Barrie and Steve Coogan might be casual acquaintances given both of them started their careers being impressionists.

in reply to: Rob Grant Dreamwatch interview 1996 #263913

Said he wanted to write a couple more RD books and be involved with the film.
25 years later we are still waiting for both!

I don’t particularly like the opening post II guitar theme tune. I know that is probably a hangable offense. I just prefer the original, more downbeat version in I-II.

Life is constantly repeating itself, like time spewing back into the Universe.

It’s not a bad episode if you compare it to a standard half an hour of standard tv sitcom. Compared to most Red Dwarf it is fairly mediocre, but compared to most of VIII its probably the best of a bad bunch. It has its moments mostly by Geraldine McEwan. Like the idiots, the Germans are everywhere I always thought was a good line. Rimmer ogling Kochanski is a bit off, given previously he made it clear he disliked her. Or is it different because this is a reconstructed rimmer by the nanobots and this is a different Konchanski?

If VIII had been 6 episodes with Back in the Red as a 2 parter, Pete 1 and 2 deleted from history and Earth had been made as planned as the last episode, it might have been a lot better.

I watched it last week and enjoyed it a lot. Ok it won’t win any Oscars but was a heartfelt effort with plenty of good gags. I am probably the target audience being a bloke approaching middle age so not sure if anyone under 30 will watch it.

Films like this kinda make you wonder what a RD movie could have been like.

in reply to: Worst episodes of series 3-5? #261169

Tricky one as the standard between 3 to 5 was so ruddy good. In fact I would challenge any other British Sitcom who had such a consistent run for 3 series/seasons. Overall I would probably say Bodyswap as it was basically just one funny concept stretched out to half an hour. Also I would say Lister would never have let Rimmer in the soft light era ever have his body! The other two I would probably mention are Meltdown and Terrorform but really they are still very good.

Wasn’t it in Robert Llewelly’s book that he envisioned Rob Grant as some sort of miserable agony uncle?

Something in the works could mean a few things like the documentaries that were supposed to be shown with TPL. Or more AA adverts.

Or remastered series IV to VIII.

in reply to: Doug’s Thoughts On More Dwarf #259054

I think Red Dwarf is the sitcom equivalent of the Rolling Stones.

Give them a few more monkey glands to chew on and slap on the extra makeup, they will be good for a few more years.

It was a very brave and frank programme and I hope he continues his recovery. He is a very talented performer and I hope that this results in him finding some more work.

in reply to: Christopher Nolan saw Red Dwarf #258831

Does this mean that the next Red Dwarf special will have Michael Caine in having a backwards dump?

in reply to: Your Unpopular Red Dwarf Opinions #258378

RD works better without Holly since Kryten was introduced and they should stop trying to bring the character back. Sorry Norm/Hattie.

in reply to: Radio times: Best Series Poll #258377

Personally I would go for IV first as I think that has the best balance between sci fi and silliness. Then I would go V,III, VI,II,XI, XII, I,X,BTE,VIII and VII.

However in terms of ratings series 8 had the highest ratings so it proves that most people have no taste.

This will probably be made into a movie with no problems then.

If Danny had stayed on the show this could easily have been put into a death in paradise episode.

in reply to: Almost XIII news #247349

Personally I would be quite surprised if we get another Series. In 20 years Doug has managed one special and one 6 series (which nearly fell apart when making it) without Baby Cow helping out.

Visionary genius writer and all round good bloke? Yes. Realistic and efficient tv producer? Probably not.

I am in the camp of being very grateful of the post Dave tv shows and treated those as a hugely welcome bonus to one of my favourite tv shows ever. But everything has its time and I think RD might well have past it. Sorry.

in reply to: This Time with Alan Partridge #246659

Watched two episodes so far. Meh its ok. I was a massive Partridge fan in the early years, less so the recent outputs post Iannucci. Post the film and I Patridge personally I don’t think its the same any more. The Nomad book I did not like at all.

Perhaps it’s me but I think they have reached the end of the character and where they can take him. Coogan is an excellent performer but I think in toning down Alan they have lost some of the sheer comedic value of the I am Alan Partridge days. It is still one of the finest comedy character British TV has ever produced though.

On a side note I have always wondered if Chris Barrie and Steve Coogan know much of each others? I believe both started out on spitting image, and both are car enthusiasts. Sounds like a tv show to me.

in reply to: Why doesn't Chris Barrie read Last Human and Backwards #238212

I nearly misread this and thought the question was if Chris Barrie could read Last Human backwards.

He would need to do it in the red room though.

in reply to: What will happen if one of the cast dies? #236123

Well they would probably have a pot of tea, bit of a chat and go home I suppose.

in reply to: Chris Barrie has updated his website #236122

I am fairly confident we will see Red Dwarf Friday the 13th. However knowing how idiosyncratic the series has been I suspect it won’t hit the screens until 2020. You could say that is all part of the charm, on the other hand about half of the leading cast will be pushing pensionable age by then.

As other said it is a shame that they have done very little for the 30th Anniversary considering how busy (at least in post 1999 terms) the Red Dwarf juggernaut has been at recently.

in reply to: Complain about Series XIII #236121

I love it when Doug goes back to the old ideas. And we really needed the third installment of the Pete trilogy. As far as I am concerned, that’s all the loose ends tied up in Red Dwarf now.

in reply to: Strictly Come Dwarfing #235999

Though it’s great to see Danny getting some work to show his stuff, It is a tad unfair on the rest of the field as he has been a professional dancer in the past. I suspect the beeb have not done their homework on this one.

in reply to: What if Series 9 had been made immediately after 8? #235108

Series 8 is a bit strange as by that time Doug was very interested in making the RD film and yet 8 is probably the most mainstream ‘tv’ series of the whole cannon. Especially after series 7 was much more film like with no live audience. I suspect if they had stuck with the beeb it would have evolved into a Fools and Horses show with occasional special episodes

A bigger question would have been what if they actually made a film.

in reply to: What if ITV had produced Red Dwarf instead of the BBC? #234892

I geninuely can’t name a decent ITV sitcom that I have ever watched. I suppose Hardwire was ok- and it lasted 1 series. ITV had men behaving badly and then gave it to the beeb and it then became one of teh biggest british sitcoms of the 90s. RD would have been shown in a graveyard time and ditched after 1 series.

If Channel 4 had produced it on the other hand would be a different story……
