I watched the 10%ers on broadcast. It was quite good. Lightly took the piss out of the world of show biz. so much like The young ones then doing that with Filthy rich and catflap etc. Rob and doug could mock the TV industry a little at a time when they had just experienced a lot of it at two main channels etc. There was one episode a bit sci fi TV in plot as well.

I’ve got the dark ages region one DVD.

Was a millennium thing. So i doubt ive watched it again in 15 or more years.

It wasnt Chelmsford 123, or blackadder, and so is a bit of an also ran. Certainly worse than any dwarf and not as good the strangerers which i liked though it went off a bit towards the end.

Think he reuses ideas and threads a lot, and does something or trys something new with them, so i would probably feel the same way I feel when I spot something referencing the past. Deliberately or less directly, I tend to spot similarities, If done well I dont mind. If it feels crowbarred in it’s a little less successful.

At one of the TV recordings Ian the warm up guy was gifted a fan in the audience making a claim her boyfriend had made her record a red dwarf porn film with him. I think Ian made her reveal more detail between takes of the actual show. Think it might have been Rimmer and Kochanski cos play, all I really remember is that she said they used a portaloo as the set for Star bug. Theres a tip for series XIII budget constraints.

Entangled is mostly genius writing of highest standard ever achieved by the whole of Red Dwarf,
its exposition including the beggs choke scene makes total sense, is consistent with Koestler it’s source material and the episode is unique among the rules of television plotting as a result of it’s non causal approach. Everything is good until the monkey/naked stuff.

You start off asking a pretty good question about widening the level of enquiry to the cast and crew, and pose what is unanswered that you’d like to hear about…

I’d say things like the movie script, the aborted episodes of series x with Kochanski and series 8’s ending are the kind of things It would fascinate me to read should they be ever given more details to fans at any point. Equally in working out what in “the beginning” does and doesn’t owe to those movie drafts.

Hologrammatic shadow gags bother me in explanation no more than microwave kebab plate materialisations, and Archie was too limp a penis gag to ever achieve robo orgasm. so I wouldn’t waste the casts time asking them such wank myself.

If Holly is back on Dwarf full time for XIII, it will feel more complete to have him there for many viewers, and what’s strange about that fact is that we’ve never really had Norman, Craig, Chris, Danny and Robert together as the only core crew in a normal situational bunk room red dwarf ship setting ever in the previous twelve series.

Definitely the school playground reaction to the show that first got me watching it, at age 12. Even just the juvenile adoption of the Smeg insult, required your curiosity to tune in and see what people were referring too. Dont know if that happens today, maybe to reality tv shows that are big on a saturday night or soaps among some people but there is zero talk at my workplace of television as a topic anymore. The odd star wars film is big enough to get the odd comment, thats about it.

“because of the whole triple-fried-egg-chili-chutney-sandwich scene, which I think is my favourite piece of character interaction in all of Red Dwarf. It’s funny, it’s touching, it gets to the heart of the characters and it sets up the story brilliantly”

    Tasty too!

“Doing a live show seems such an odd idea to me. I’m sure it’ll be amazing for the hardcore fans that have the time and money to go to the 02 to see it, but it’s a big fuck you to everyone else.”

Would you feel that way IF a live show DVD followed Lily?

While there is some money for making the shows, and then obviously revenue for worldwide sales, repeat screenings, and DVD and Merch etc. I think being a digital channle plus television in general being what it is now compared to the late 80s that the money isnt what it was perhaps back then for a shows stars and creator.

With Dwarf being a big recognisable brand and idea, the desire to do a live show to exploit that would be something that follows in the wake of Monty python and Still Game selling multiple nights in uk Arenas and bringing in Millions, thats the incentive right there, to make money after 30 years of making this sci fi comedy a sucess, including nearly a decade in the wilderness.

I enjoyed python in person and Still game on dvd, so either way with Dwarf live I would personally be interested, and i think a more general audience, even a nostalgia audience who isnt even that bothered with the TV show may be interested in the live show when its an event they can attend and talk about. I think the show could stage an interesting new narrative that also includes loads of nods to the shows history or “hits” in the way Still Game did. Could be a great celebration of the show.

I wonder about Robert in the mask though, even though he is used to say three hours or more on a TV recording night, I think a run at the 02 if ticket sales allowed a week of shows or more etc there might be some issues there in the logistics of it to be considered.

I had Twentica 36 places higher as my number 10 which was the biggest number of places different to the poll result. No surprise i was at the recording of that one. But a mixture of Kevin Eldon both as performer and the concept of his character and luci phol meeting her at DJ and being great in it all means im really into rewatching this one still XI aired. It gets near gunmen in its ambition and setting and adventure feel, i know many always want character study, but i dont, not always, and its very funny, and its a buggsy malone kind of a sunday watch chill out thing with me since the XI dvd came out.

Fathers & Suns, Trojan, Krysis, The Beginning, Cured, Siliconia, Give and Take, Officer Rimmer,
makes 9 Dave ones in my top 36. I’m still enjoying the new era DVDs in general.

Demons & Angels, Psirens, Justice, Terrorform, Emo Hawk, The Last Day are sitting just outside the bubble. Ive watched the old series tons of times and dont rewatch as often now and these are the ones i dont gravitate to. Where as like the poll Confidence & Paranoia, Rimmerworld, Balance of Power and Waiting for God are fair bit lower. I never rated the first series as being in its stride yet.

And im not signed up to the love of Mcorp. ive got it a good 25 or more lower down.

I’m gonna call it Back2Earth just to annoy more people.

My DVDs (reversed covers where possible) have always sat within a cardboard hard back slipcase for the Ronnie Barker dvd collection. Which previously housed complete porridge and open all hours etc sitcoms. All my pre 1980s comedy’s i removed from their packaging and keep in a wallet system for space. But kept this box as a handy container for dwarf and long before the irony of mr vegas or that Geordie Jesus being in a new open all hours it has kept my dwarf DVDs together, I always felt doug would have approved of the porridge link. 12 series now fills it. So come series 13 I’m fucked. As I don’t see a larger barker box being released. He’s not likely to do a new series.

I agree Ben, but can’t we just point them to “the strangerers,” the opening few episodes of which I like, and that millenium dark ages thing that I’ve barely rewatched, and then in the last 17 years a few novels. And conclude that had Rob written some solo dwarf since 96 some of it would have been interesting or funny, some of it patchy and crap, and there would still have been long periods of nothing happening with the show on hiatus cus he didnt write anything for a while.

Nice one Darrell, so the episode about criticism before it’s scheduled online preview, has been previewed ahead of its preview and praised.

The praiser has had his praise shared, and someone has criticised them for even watching it, and then weve critised the people who preview previewed it by mistake and now we are criticising the criticising woman for criticising the watcher and not saying sorry because she shouldnt have criticised him?

And all this criticism of watching the crit-cop one has happened because an episode called TIME wave was early?

There hasnt been a good ending to that bad episode that im aware of yet. I dont think doug has really finished writing that episode yet. he got close in series X.

clearly that episode had to finish the status quo of the prison story, return the possibility of a red dwarf with only a small crew onboard of central characters, so the see no ships ending might have done that better. but the third thing that was needed was an appetite for dwarf to return, at the time, as a movie.
“The smeg it is” while total shite helped the audience at least into a very long mode of “sitting and waiting for more dwarf” as opposed to a “dwarfs over forever” mind set. Now thankfully it’s a significant “end of chapter” marker, rather than the rubbish end to a tv show petering out forever and failing to fund a movie.
