I’m pretty sure it’s a reference to the 1938 Thomas Bentley film “Marigold” but there’s not enough detail on the Wikipedia page to make this lie plausible

I was only really into anime for a few months back in the early 00s, but it felt like much longer because I watched Dot Hack

There might be a disc changer mechanism or something for the official hologram, & the 2nd one is more basic because they’ve cobbled it together themselves.

This is like that time that Sherlock fans convinced themselves that there was a secret fourth episode of the final series coming because the finale was so awful.

    OK, good to know!
So yeah, they Lucas’d it. Recompositing effect shots is on the line, but creating brand new CGI effects is crossing it. Even if the execution is much more restrained and the goal is purely recreation, the principle is the same. (Unless they went the “optional extra” route of course.)

It is optional, they put both versions on the disc.

Same with the Doctor Who blurays, which is fortunate because they only ever seem to update the episodes that already have perfect VFX, like Timelash & the one with the giant rat

Kochanski spends most of VII as “the new girl” & most of VIII as “the wallpaper” but when she’s actually allowed to be funny she’s my absolute fav & I really wish she had another series to settle in & just be a weird nerd.

Dunno where to report this but I guess it’s a sort of mundane observation – whenever I get the “request is being verified” anti-bot thing on this site it only unlocks the main domain, so all the smegadrive images are broken until I specifically go there as well

People assume the doughnut boy line undermines Hollister’s credibility as captain but I reckon it’s like a Gattaca situation or a caste system where that was a limitation placed upon him & he rose above it.

But that “I should tell Yaz I love her”/”You won’t” interaction felt pretty pointed. I don’t know how to interpret that other than as a jab at Chibnall – unless that was there because Chibnall personally felt regret and asked for it to be put in.

    “You won’t… but she knows”

Basically reiterating to 13 & the audience that their relationship was valid & mutual even if they couldn’t make anything more of it.

When the Rani explains that the Master’s gene explosion genocide thing was the cause of the bigenerations and the sterility and the finale’s events and that it basically did kill all the Time Lords eventually, with extinction being a little slower, I took that to maybe be meta-commentary that the show itself was mortally wounded from the Chibnall-era and succumbed to its wounds eventually. I don’t necessarily subscribe to that take myself but I’m wondering if that was meant to be a deliberate meta-shot from RTD or if I’m reading into it a bit. He kept all the Chibnall stuff canon which I really really respected, but then to be like, yep, this is all the Chibnall Master’s fault felt like a 180 on that.

I really don’t think that’s the case at all. RTD may be off his game recently but I don’t think he’s dumb enough to both a) buy into all that internet-brained stuff about the Chibnall era being an unprecedented turbo-disaster, and b) take something he thinks has hurt the show & weave it even tighter into the ongoing narrative.

You know what… that was alright 🙂

First bit felt like a bit of a cop out but once the episode settled in I enjoyed it.

Lovely cameo, even if it didn’t seem to have much of a point! And yes I did call that final shot but now time has shifted by a degree so we’ve landed one actor to the side.

For the record, I actually don’t mind CB (and I haven’t heard his much vaunted Big Finish stuff). But ‘The Twin Dilemma’ is pretty indefensible.

It’s indefensible in the sense that it’s completely middle-of-the-road for the era & not worth getting worked up about, despite also not being remotely as bad or crazy as everyone says. It’s the Sonic Forces of 80s Who.

The core idea & execution of them living in a fascist’s idea of utopia, & it inevitably crumbling in contact with reality, is really excellent. I’m also enjoying the Rani’s return, even if they haven’t quite done enough to make her more than The Master 2 so far. Of course the whole thing topples over into RTD nonsense by the end but I still really enjoyed the episode, & will continue to like it for exactly one week, until it’s permanently bolted to the side of some stupid garbage & rendered unsalvageable (not that I’m pre-judging part 2 or anything)

They didn’t even line up the spines on the blurays, which normally wouldn’t be surprising because home media cover designers are all psychopaths who do that on purpose (sorry you can’t convince me otherwise), but I expected better from Red Dwarf after the DVDs & the remastered VHSes & such.

I quite liked this episode on its own but I’m a little concerned about the implications of every god from every culture ever apparently now being real.

I was under the impression that RTD’s little storybook phase was more or less contained to his own pantheon, & at some point he would put it all back in the box the way he found it, but now he seems to be suggesting that there’s always been magic shit going on everywhere & we just didn’t notice for the first 60 years. Which is a) kind of stupid, and b) a fundamental change to the show.

    Am I overreacting?

I remember sitting on the carpet in a stranger’s living room as a tween, my parents having dragged me out to visit a family friend or a distant aunt or something. I’d brought the Programme Guide to read while the grownups chattered away for the requisite 15 or 16 hours. During a quiet moment I shuffled up to my mom and innocently asked “what does this mean”, pointing to the index entry for “transvestite”. She said she didn’t know. I considered opening the question to the floor, but my innate shyness pulled me back from the edge, and I returned to my corner with a shrug.

“Consent or pay” might be a little less disgusting if it actually removed the ads instead of just promising to withhold the evil ones. Also if they didn’t keep trying to convince you that personalised ads are good & you like them actually, right there in the same box where they’re charging you money to get away from them.

Maybe after Empire of Death I’m just happy to have a plot that at least pretends to be semi-logically consistent instead of one that goes “Oh yeah the TARDIS can time teleport them from the future back to modern UNIT, oh and also we’re not gonna adequately address Ruby making it snow, womp womp, fuck you.” (I do largely like this season and this era but holy fuck did that finale blow.)

Empire of Death isn’t real, we all know that. It’s a fake episode, they’re all paid actors.

My (unserious) pet theory is that it was originally going to be an alien rights movement, & the point of the livestream was to show UNIT storming in with guns & cages & fascism & such. You can’t tell me that never crossed the mind of the man who wrote Kerblam.
