Quite hazy but last night dreamt about a film I was raving about to a friend and then suddenly found myself in, something to do with a religious cult I was trying to escape from. Then it changed genre completely Rat Pfink a Boo Boo style when Red Dwarf landed on Earth and the crew took on the cult. The cult were the bad guys, might even have taken over the whole world by this point. Anyway, I was barely in it once Red Dwarf turned up. Kryten had a, seemingly human, love interest played by Fiona Allen. He also had bare feet the whole time, like we see when he gets naked in series VIII, but apart from his feet he was “clothed” as normal.

That’s the mirror universe Lister with the mustache. Only in a deleted scene.

Oh I hate that, find it really cringey. So much so I suggested it as a low for the Holly moments High and Low article. Is High and Low ever coming back? I liked it.

Maybe my favourite film butler is Hobson in Arthur but I don’t think Hobson’s a good name for a mechanoid. Come to think of it, Lister and Kryten’s relationship is a bit like Arthur and Hobson’s.

There’s the line about going back in time and persuading Dustin Hoffman not to do the much-maligned (unfairly imo) Ishtar. (I also once really enjoyed an amateur production of Run For Your Wife, but have never listened to an album by Olivia Newton-John.)

Good hijack. I didn’t know about the convention of using IIII until I listened to the commentary on Back to the Future. Bob Gale points out that the clock tower is unusual for having a IV.

Definitely Hattie. Pretty much what Ian said, plus I genuinely think Hattie would be better suited to the show the way it is now than Norman would. If we’re talking about Norm’s various jeremiads and whinges over the years, let’s not forget his bizarre claim that he was upset about “the female Norman Lovett” being cast as the new Holly because he’d been promised they wouldn’t replace him with somebody like him.

Yep, but I’ve just had to look them up. According to Wikipedia it’s “Behold the man who is a bean” and “Farewell, man who is a bean”.

And everybody knows the piccolo part in the Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em theme spells out the name of the show in morse code, right?

Hear, hear. When Craig was on the One Show a while ago he was on about how he’d left Corrie because he wanted to do various other things, mentioned RD, his poetry, his funk and soul stuff, and Alex Jones commented on how hard he was working and it must be tiring. It was something along those lines, and Craig replied “Well, not really y’know – I’m not digging ditches.” I liked that.

Only got that photo to go on but the mask looks really good to me, and I think overall I like the rest of it too, shape-wise. Wasn’t keen on the big shoulder hoops in X. I like the chest and the big monitor. Don’t like the sound of “all one light gray colour” though.

It was a good exit for Craig/Lloyd but Steve not being there to see him off felt all wrong. Apparently Steve was meant to be in the live episode but had to be written out because Simon Gregson was unable to take part due to illness. I know it’s all usually recorded weeks in advance but I’m wondering whether Steve getting shitfaced in the cellar in Monday’s episodes and having to sleep it off was concocted so there’d be a plausible reason for Steve to miss the party? According to Digital Spy Lloyd “will be back for one final appearance tomorrow to say goodbye to his best friend Steve”

    > I suspect a return to the Street will be inevitable, though…

Here’s hoping for a Lloyd comeback special two-hander with Steve in a few years’ time.

    > What about the people Lister had eaten bits of when they were in dust form? Would they not be able to be resurrected?

For that matter, where did the nanos get any of the crew’s remains? Are we to assume something like the deleted funeral scene from The End happened at some stage, or did the skutters just sweep everybody up and put them in the bin?

Btw it’s “Petersen”, because he’s Danish.

Was about to say exactly that. It’s like Rory Calhoun in The Simpsons. Also Felicity Kendall is a funny-sounding name.

    > I’d agree Felicity Kendall wasn’t a good choice for the joke (instantly dates a future-set show)

For the most part I don’t like that sort of joke in RD but for some reason when it’s Holly I think they get away with it. I even like his QPR line in VIII, whereas I hate Lister calling the dinosaur “Barney’s ugly brother”.

    > I remember Douglas saying at the time of the tenth anniversary that he felt he owed the fans a really funny Red Dwarf novel after the dramatic direction of Last Human so it was definitely his intention to make series VIII as funny as possible too.

That’s interesting. You do have to wonder what Doug was thinking with VIII. I’ve said before that series is the RD equivalent to the Gene Deitch Tom and Jerry cartoons, except they really were made by people who didn’t quite get what they were meant to be doing and had very little respect or affection for what had come before. VIII just seems like it was. And yes it’s “bad television” but it’s fucking awful Red Dwarf.
