I don’t think I’d have a problem with BTE’s “real world” being a different kind of slightly strange, off-kilter world that was obviously not *our* world (obviously that would make sense story-wise, because they’re hallucinating), but the Blade Runner stuff is just so totally overdone. I don’t get what Doug was going for with that, and none of it really works at all for me.
I agree with Pete that going further down the meta-fiction route and deconstructing the show could’ve been good but, as I think has been suggested before, maybe then it might have been better to do something that wasn’t meant to be canon? Some sort of special anniversary celebration of Dwarf rather than proper new episodes. I actually really like a lot of the meta stuff in BTE. I love Rimmer wondering how he’s hilarious and neurotic, and Kryten telling him for example. Also like some of the more dramatic moments like the Lister and Kochanski stuff but again, the Blade Runner “homages” spoil it somewhat.

One thing I don’t like about the Director’s Cut is that there’s a really good Rimmer reaction shot in Part 1 that’s not in the DC.

Good article. I can still remember being annoyed by how Brittas ended at the time. I won’t say too much and spoil it, but as far as dreams in sitcoms go, Newhart probably won’t ever be topped.

Just spotted over on TOS the news that BBC Radio 4 Extra are once again airing episodes of Son of Cliché, Tuesdays at 11.30pm, which is nice of them.

I can see the similarity, but when he pulls that face in the Thanks For The Memory smeg-up he’s definitely already smegged up, and so it’s more of an apologetic “oops” face I think. I’ve just watched the Marooned clip and I do think you might be right though. Anyway, this has reminded me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhCI0JceBic&t=1m5s

If you enacted the Beautiful Town ordinance before you abandoned them it shouldn’t be too bad. Otherwise expect cockroaches in your house, weeds galore and lots of wilted flowers.

I’ve got two who are obsessed with working out – Cobb the bespectacled pig and Biff the hippo, but Biff’s moving soon. I’m hoping they’ll either fight or get it on before he goes. Deli the monkey and Joey the duck who calls me Mr C are adorable. I just got rid of a rabbit called Tiffany who was a bit haughty and up herself. Melba the koala calls me Toasty for some reason, which I like. Eugene, another koala, is a bit of a pretentious twat at times but he’s alright.

Yep, red, yellow and green items can affect your luck depending on where you put them in your main room. A good rule of thumb is to place green things next to your south wall.

Does everybody know the Pointless with Craig and Danny was on on Saturday? Still available on iPlayer of course. Definitely worth watching. There’s a great moment where Craig puts Brendan O’Carroll in his place. O’Carroll really does come across as being quite odious.

Payday bars are indeed lush. I also like Tootsie Roll, and Tootsie Pops except the chocolate flavour ones.

Isn’t it the case that in America they have a chocolate bar called a Milky Way which isn’t the same as a UK Milky Way, and is in fact a UK Mars bar?

    > The first two series were a bit rubbish though…

The quests were a bit more obviously formulaic in the first three than in later series, with all the wall monsters with their three questions and the designated clue rooms etc., but I prefer them to series 4. I don’t think they got the new format quite right in that series, but they tweaked and pretty much perfected it by series 5, which is great, as is 6. Series 7’s not as good mainly because some of the new characters are a bit rubbish imo. I really like 8 though. Shame it was the last, and so short.

The first of a new series of Pointless Celebrities being shown this Saturday has Christopher Biggins and Lesley Joseph among its contestants, so I’m guessing it must be the sitcom stars one that will also feature Craig and Danny.

I can forgive Norm if he’s genuinely sorry but if we’re talking about a potential return to RD, I think it’s worth remembering that Hattie hasn’t acted like a twat at all, and is surely more deserving than Norm of the opportunity to play Holly again, should the character appear ever again.

A lack of professionalism’s one thing, but some of the comments Norm’s come out with are really unpleasant and a few seem downright nasty, and none of it seems justified. I just get the impression he’s a horrible bloke tbh. What was he actually like in person Ian? And how did your set go?

It was the first episode I saw so it’ll always have a bit of a special place in my heart. My only problem with it are the few slightly jarring moments where Deb and Arlene don’t ring true as female Lister and Rimmer equivalents. I don’t find any of it offensive though. The guest cast are very good, including the Dog.

Parallel Universe during the ’94 repeat run. I was 11. I’m pretty sure they were already in the parallel universe when I started watching, so I couldn’t have had a clue what was going on not having seen the show before, let alone the first part of the episode. I hadn’t even heard of Red Dwarf. I was definitely hooked right away though, and the next time I saw Red Dwarf was when Backwards was repeated and I made sure I saw it. (I think that was only a week or two later. Anybody have those ’94 repeat dates?) Then of course I was utterly confused by the dramatically different look, Holly/Hilly, and Kryten, but it was like nothing I’d ever seen before, and of course it was very funny. I was intrigued and became a big fan very quickly, got the videos, novels, found out about the fan club etc. and never looked back.

    > Woof!, The Tomorrow People (both a bit slow)

I suppose those episodes of Woof! that were on were bound to be – the very first, and what was essentially a reboot. Pretty sure some of the Eric era at least was very good indeed.
