I had to do it the old fashioned way and take screenshots when the cast were in different parts of the set and then just cobble together the empty sets from those like a jigsaw. I had a lot of time on my hands *counts on fingers* *runs out of fingers* 19 years ago. Fuck me, I’m old. February 7, 2026 at 8:55 pm in reply to: Your Unpopular Red Dwarf Opinions #316449 Danny StephensonKeymaster The music selection also wasn’t violent death metal or something, it was just lame music. What I found odd about that particular joke, is it sounds like Rimmer’s normal music collection. But that isn’t what he says in the episode. as Clem points out it’s Arthur saying Erskib, not “bitter” reversed We’re getting confused between two different lines in the same bit. When Lister asks what he’s drinking, he does indeed say “erskib”. But then when he’s undowned his pint, he says to the barmaid the words “jingle bells” backwards, which is subtitled as “same again”. I will admit to being a bit of a smart-arse here with this, but after finding out that the Smegadrive/subs are being used legitimately for the hard of hearing. I may have to stop pulling this shit. August 17, 2025 at 1:37 pm in reply to: Thingiverse Red Dwarf #310097 Danny StephensonKeymaster I’m VERY interested by this thread. Excellent work Cardinal_Hordriss! You’ve made me want to try (for the 4th time) to build a new Red Dwarf in 3D for a printed puzzle I’ve been after making for ages! Fun Fact: The logo for DJXX which I did with Jez Harrison has no back to it! We ran out of time to finish it, so in true Model Unit style, we shot it in a way that hid anything that we didn’t want the camera to pick up. These gameshows are the reason why I always thought that University Challenge teams WERE on top of each other. I didn’t know that Vyvyan kicking Ben Elton’s character in the head was a joke for the longest time. I took that at face value. September 7, 2024 at 11:31 pm in reply to: Lego Red Dwarf Art Project #298117 Danny StephensonKeymaster You could add one of these tucked away somewhere for the box containing the hologram discs. It’s hard to think of other stuff that’s on the outside of the ship. A recreation of the bunkroom window shape maybe? I like the idea of adding a box, but that particular piece isn’t big enough to fit in any disk-like Lego pieces, but I’m definitely doing this! There is a newspaper stand that features in another build that is literally to my right as I type and it is perfect for such a scenario. See attached. September 7, 2024 at 11:28 pm in reply to: Lego Red Dwarf Art Project #298116 Danny StephensonKeymaster Very cool. I like how some of the F is a duller red because Lister hasn’t painted that bit yet. Nice touch. I’m really glad that came through! I’m wondering about grunging up the ship somewhat, but I think that might have to wait until I have finished the majority or I discover a way to have the rust visible in places. I can’t give myself too much to concentrate on at once, or the whole process gets a bit… noisy. September 7, 2024 at 11:26 pm in reply to: Lego Red Dwarf Art Project #298115 Danny StephensonKeymaster Thanks for all your supportive messages. They are gratefully appreciated. Absolutely lovely. Maybe somewhere you can stick in another little Lister and Confidence, doing their cha-cha-cha dance. I like the idea of putting things on the ship that reference certain events that happened on the exterior. Two ideas come to mind: – A polymorph of some description and – Bits of confidence’s spacesuit for that authentic Dwarf ‘ick’ factor. March 7, 2021 at 2:06 pm in reply to: The Sound Design Of Red Dwarf #264604 Danny StephensonKeymaster There’s a sound effect used for the drone of the Vogon ship in Hitch-Hiker’s Guide that shows up in Gunmen when Starbug is approaching the lava planet. Oh fantastic. I will investigate March 6, 2021 at 5:18 pm in reply to: The Sound Design Of Red Dwarf #264587 Danny StephensonKeymaster and then there’s that sound effect which I don’t recognise from any other episode which reaches the climax of alienation (?) and then it sort of takes it down a gear for the dialogue where Lister poos himself because he stole a bed from a hotel millions of years ago. Even as a kid, I understood there to be something weird about that scene. the absence of atmosphere is really jarring, but in a way that completely serves the story. It’s all about the dialogue right now, not the setting. (Not much of a set anyway but you know what I mean). Justice is a good example where sound design really helps the plot. The end fight scene with the simulant is great, the SFX have a real weight to them, and considering how much they’re meant to be hurting each other (themselves?) it really sells it. March 5, 2021 at 8:11 pm in reply to: The Sound Design Of Red Dwarf #264580 Danny StephensonKeymaster mentioned the ‘Luke’s X Wing/ Starbug’ sound and stuff. I’ve located the exact source of that sound! I shall reveal all when the time is right. March 5, 2021 at 5:46 pm in reply to: The Sound Design Of Red Dwarf #264575 Danny StephensonKeymaster I’ve always been a big fan of the sound of Lister’s space mumps exploding off-screen, it’s wonderfully evocative and the audience know exactly what has happened even before the reveal of the Cat A lot of the sound effects seem to simple come from vocal sounds, and that one is no exception :) March 5, 2021 at 5:44 pm in reply to: The Sound Design Of Red Dwarf #264573 Danny StephensonKeymaster I like the triumphant Also Sprach Zarathrustra-ish tone when the white hole collapses, but I think its reuse in Back to Reality is rubbish. That is an instrument that Howard Goodall likes to use a lot. Same with the Guitar patch that he uses for Ace’s Theme, but also shows up in some incidental music for Vicar Of Dibley. I believe it’s a Roland module of some kind. March 5, 2021 at 5:42 pm in reply to: The Sound Design Of Red Dwarf #264572 Danny StephensonKeymaster I don’t think much about the sound design of Red Dwarf… so it must be pretty good. This is a good point. When done right, it should be invisible. March 5, 2021 at 5:39 pm in reply to: The Sound Design Of Red Dwarf #264571 Danny StephensonKeymaster Has anyone heard any sounds from Red Dwarf that were in other shows? I know thematically there’s not much of a crossover, but I’ve not heard any sound effects used in other shows from around that time. Possibly even Doctor Who. I’ve heard a few sounds in Star Wars that were used in Dwarf in series 3 onwards. Hitchhikers would be a good example that could maybe have some similar library usage if indeed that is what it is, but I haven’t seen that show enough to know. I’m going to be doing some digging in preparation of a thing I’m working on so any information anyone has about the sound of Dwarf or anything connected would be really helpful. November 4, 2018 at 6:41 pm in reply to: Let's Talk About Inside No. 9 Live Episode #238780 Danny StephensonKeymaster One friend with a sharp eye pointed out you can actually see the ghostly figure in the window before it’s right up against it and clawing at it (it’s at the back of the garden, slowly making its way forward) and that there’s multiple occasions later on where you can see similar creatures hiding in the background, reflected in mirrors erc. which I hadn’t spotted before. So once again I was freaked out by it Yes!. I realised that too. It’s very much a “Pipes Sighting” scenario looking out for all the appearances… November 4, 2018 at 2:20 pm in reply to: Let's Talk About Inside No. 9 Live Episode #238775 Danny StephensonKeymaster OK, I’m very late to this thread. I mentioned this in the PipesCast, but broadcast interruptions scare the fuck out of me. I thought that it was excellently played. I was watching it live (I tend to watch things after the fact on demand, but this was diferent). I was expecting something to go slightly wrong, like Si said with the egg or the radio, but then the sound cut out and I was genuinely annoyed the music died down and then I realised that the dialogue was muted, so I thought “maybe this is part of the plot, maybe he’s deaf or something and that’s the point”. and then the “Technical Difficulties” board came up and I was pissed. When the show came back on and was still muted, I was just annoyed by that point. And even on a Whatsapp group. I’d announced that I’m not watching it anymore. By which point A Quiet Night In had started, and I wasn’t paying much attention to it, until I heard the music wavering, and when I looked up to see the ghostly figure in the window, my stomach lurched. That proper, horrible feeling when something isn’t right. I haven’t felt that in ages. Then the camera’s switched and the 4th wall came tumbling down. And from then on I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen. I even remembered to breath every once in a while. I thought it was fantastic. I tried to watch it again straight afterwards but I couldn’t bring myself to watch it so soon. I had to wait until the sun was up before I could manage it. And like Si said. I couldn’t trust my TV from that point on that night. I was expecting something to happen. Even at 11pm when Steve mentioned it would repeat, but at that point is was supposed to the the Ring, and I noped the fuck out of that for the night. My thoughts are pretty much down on record on teh Dwarfcast. But the long and short of it was: Pre-recorded stuff doesn’t bother me because I understand if it’s unfeasible to present it in a way to the audience on the night (ie Samsara having to be clean for the Pre-accident) it needs to be pre-recorded. I think it was much more frustrating for the crew filming it having to move from set to set in order to present the story in chronological order for the audience to understand. Especially with the Kryten-Rimmer/Cat-Lister threads running concurrently. The scenes with the live performances were complex enough to require the time needed (and I think we’re also on record to say that it was the longest shoot time of Series XI, regardless of pre-records). I tell you what colours the performance for the better for me is the laugh track in DNA. The scene where Kryten is troubleshooting his anatomy (ooh pardon), there is a distinctive high pitched squeak laugh which for me is just as much part of the scene as the dialogue.
