I really don’t like that shirt. It just seems so weirdly meta and self-aware.

Yes. Bored of the same blue outfit all the time.

I liked the mix & match aspect of III where he had t-shirts, shirts or jackets appropriate to the situation.

I always felt that Asclepius wasn’t used very well. There’s no build up to meeting him, then next scene he’s bazookered into bits. At least with Lanstrom there was some tension.

    >“some neurotic droid who’s completely obsessed with my pants drawer!” to which kryten responds “you mean I’m not alone?” what does this mean?

I’ve always taken the joke to be:
    – Kryten does not consider himself obsessed with her pants drawer
    – He thinks he’s ‘alone’ in being the only droid on the ship
    – “you mean I’m not alone” = ooh there’s another droid?!
    – shame face = oh, you’re calling me neurotic and obsessed with pants :(

Question for the Americans though: how well does this translate that the whole issue is regarding underwear and not pants/trousers?

    >Good old http://www.red-rose.com/www.cobalt.demon.co.uk/alt.tv.red-dwarf/reflist-tv-255.html is there for all your reference-getting needs (up to December 1997).

It’s quite interesting reading through this. It’s astounding just how many general cultural references there are. It’s a wonder that foreign markets ‘get’ RD, considering how many jokes rely on having a minimal amount of UK knowledge.

Maybe that’s why 8 is popular overseas, it has more accessible broad jokes, rather than quips about Felicity Kendal’s bottom.

I’ve always taken ‘stoke me a clipper’ as a malapropism. Nothing more complicated than Rimmer fucking up the line.

Quite a lot of the 80s references missed me, even though I was alive at the time and first watched Dwarf as an adult. Think it’s mostly footballing stuff that passed me by, like Peter Beardsley.

    >a fair few episodes seem to end with one of the main characters getting tortured in some way or another, don’t they?

This is one reason I’ve never understood the upset over the end of Tikka. Violence between the guys isn’t new, especially when in Quarantine you see they’ve beaten the crap out of each other.

It’s kinda sweet in a slight slash-fic way that in all these years and with a spaceship five miles long, it’s never occurred to them to have separate bedrooms.

    >Why not Lily? Explain yourself, please.

Well, I pretty much thought the follow sentence did just that. The actors are integral to the show for me.

I’ve not read the books, listened to the audio books, read any magazines, or anything like that. I’m mildly curious about some of the different aspects of the books but not enough to actually bother buying and reading them. I’ve not even watched the story-boarded ‘lost’ episodes on the DVDs. I tried one of them but the ‘reading stage directions’ stuff really put me off.

Basically, I love the TV show. Just the TV show. Only the TV show. With these actors.

If the movie had ever happened and it was cast with different actors, I probably wouldn’t bother watching until it got to Netflix, and wouldn’t have liked it much even then.

    Nope. No interest at all.

It’s a character comedy and at this point the actors are as much a part of the characters as the script.

I just presumed it was nicer because of rank. Officers get swish white rooms, third level technicians get plain grey ones.

Although as the bunk rooms have gotten bigger over the years they make increasingly less sense. Most people would prefer to have a smaller room privately, than an enormous room they have to share. The amount of space taken by the bunk-suite in XI/XII could be used by two double bedrooms quite easily.

    >Wait, how much did 6 pints of bitter cost in 1978? I just realised I may have been interpreting this joke all wrong ever since I first read it.

    43p each, or £2.58 for the 6

The price of a pint from 1928-2015 in todays money

I’m a big fan of the BBC TV version, and it was always clear in that it was a generous tip.

    >But if that were the case, why wouldn’t they be wearing Holoship uniform? They are all wearing variants of Rimmer’s uniform.

Huh, yeah. Good point. I guess I only thought they were ex-holoship as they were ‘good’ crew. But I guess Dwarf must have had intelligent competent crew somewhere. We only saw Lister and his mates.

Considering the light bee has clearly been upgraded at some point, to the level it could survive a 6 month trek across Roman Europe without a recharge … then yeah sure, it can project a separate piece of clothing.

I doubt that the majority of the audience even remember the whole soft light / hard light thing. Even when he was soft there was a bunch of inappropriate touching of things anyway.

I preferred the earlier series when it comes to clothing. Both Rimmer and Lister had a naturally varied wardrobe. Casual comfy stuff for chilling in the bunks, jackets etc for going out and about in. Rimmer’s captain emerald outift had different levels of formality, with the t-shirt underneath, smooth jacket or big padded jacket for going out.

More recent stuff it’s like they’re cosplay of their own characters. Like we wouldn’t recognise them if Rimmer wasn’t in a blue tunic or Lister in a leather jacket. ALL THE TIME. I mean, only weird creepy people wear the same thing every day. Looking at you Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg.

I don’t buy the whole colour coded soft/hard light thing. Other than being a convenient visual indication that something about him had changed, I don’t see any reason why he’s tied to that colour.

He’s always worn all manner of different outfits and uniforms when the occasional demands it, you can’t tell me that he can never wear red or green again.

It’s interesting how it highlights the role of the character as a ‘viewer stand-in person that asks all the questions which I can’t remember what the proper name for is’.

I guess just like Holly got dropped due to the exposition role moving to Kryten, Cat didn’t have much to do in VIII as there was nothing that really needed an exposition prompt.

I’d always presumed it was less a case of Dwarf being unusual in having productions problems, and more that they’re unusual in openly discussing them.

How many other sitcoms have 30+ minute in-depth documentaries on every series DVD? (That’s not a rhetorical question, genuinely asking.)

Considering the detail of the description of his meals in Tika, it’s looking pretty rice free.

    LISTER
Thursday. Always the same meal: three poppadoms with mango chutney –
    KRYTEN
    Those little onions –
    LISTER
    Dill pickle –
    KRYTEN
That day-glow green mint sauce that just doesn’t wash out –
    LISTER
The red stuff that no-one knows what it is –
    KRYTEN
Then a shami kebab starter –
    LISTER
Followed by a chicken vindaloo, kamikaze hot, with a fire extinguisher on stand-by.
    KRYTEN
And two scoops of kofi ice-cream.
    LISTER
And two indigestion tablets. <LISTER sighs heavily>

    Also … no naan.

I had remembered there was a good discussion over the Hattie/Norm returning as Holly thing previously :)

However, I would presume Norman far more likely, as didn’t he ask to be in XI/XII but it was too late to write him in, hence just the Skipper appearance?

All of those seem incredibly likely, except maybe the snacky one.

Not sure I’d exactly cheer for Norman to be back. I say Norm, as it’s always him coming back. No-one ever seems to consider Hattie and I’ve no idea if she even has any appetite for it.

I’d likewise always thought that the Lister/Mrs Rimmer sex hadn’t happened either. After all, no sign of the alphabetti spaghetti anywhere and I’m sure anything fun with that would end up being messy.

There’s nothing to say it was a male though. Cat’s polymorph had a batch of fertilised eggs ready to lay in a host, but that doesn’t mean all females are always carrying eggs.

As with many things Red Dwarf, it doesn’t do to pick at the logic too hard. If polymorphs ‘feed’ off of emotions, why do the crew get them back when it dies?

    >as if a band going out on tour is “a big fuck you” to everyone who can’t make those shows, therefore the band should just stick to making albums.

But a band touring perform songs that people have already have heard. It’s not like the entire set is completely new music that will never be heard again, other than a recording of one show.

    >I’d say that porn is probably the clearest example where watching something performed live in a theatre full of strangers is really NOT preferable to watching a recorded version in private. The chance to shout out “he’s behind you!” just doesn’t make up for the downsides.

Lol yes, true. Maybe not the best analogy but it was the first thing that came to mind.

I’m not opposed to multi parters in principle, it’s just unfortunate that the most well know are Back in the Red and Pete, which were both drawn out and padded well beyond what the plot could carry.

I’d say that Epideme/Nanarchy is an example of it done well. There was too much story for one episode, but enough was added to make it last two without feeling stretched.
