(incidentally, this clearly isn?t that difficult a concept – the letter ?r? after a vowel often gets turned into a ?z? with the rest of the name chopped off. EASY.)

    Yeah, well.

The initial question from post 1 remains. Why? What’s the correlation between “r” and “z” (of all the letters of the alphabet)?

Nero destroys Vulcan rather than attempting to protect or evacuate Romulus?

It was the original plan to save Romulus (Nero and Spock tried it together) but it has already been destroyed at this point in time. That is also how Nero got hold of that kind of superadvanced technology.

It’s explained in the comics that were released prior to the film.

Ten years ago, I started writing a book about dating geeks. Why it’s a good idea, where to find them, how to get their attention, what to do on a date, etc. Never got around to writing down most of it, then much later I found out someone else already had.

Do you need depth in a Star Trek film?

Do you need depth in a Batman film? Probably not, but it makes it so much more fun to watch.

What Star Trek films had depth?

    Some episodes had.

    you> toast it.
Talkie Toaster> ?it? being toast ?
    you> yes
    Talkie Toaster> Awesome.

    And this:

you> no one mentioned toast? but you are a fucking toaster!
Talkie Toaster> That is a rather sweeping generalization about people.

    And this:

Talkie Toaster> Talking is my primary function.
    you> I thought toasting was
Talkie Toaster> Whatever gave you that idea?
you> the fact that you are a toaster
    Talkie Toaster> Am I a toaster? No.
    you> no!!!!!!!!!!!! flipping well are!!!!!
Talkie Toaster> Aha. Do not ask me any more questions please.

Epic. Make it into an episode.

Well, wasn’t that fun. Of sorts.

The lensflare kitsch really, really, REALLY got on my nerves 10 minutes into the film.

Other than that – big fun.

The characters were fine – the only one not to leave any emotional impression on me being Sulu. I’m not too sure about Scotty yet but will reserve final judgement until I’ve seen Simon Pegg with his original voice and all. Despite earlier skepticism, loved Karl Urban as McCoy. And Chekov was great. Leonard Nimoy did not feel out of place or forced into the story like Grampa Kirk back then in Generations.

I’ve liked Eric “Hot Hector” Bana before, so it comes as no surprise that I loved him as renegade Romulan. (“Story? What story? Sorry I was lost in Bana’s face there for a bit…”)

The thing that I loved most was Spock’s AWESOME MAGNET (or something) HOODIE. I want one.

The thing that was the most rubbish was Quinto’s Vulcan greeting fail. C’mon, anyone can learn that if they practise on a plain surface, like, I don’t know, the kitchen table.

So! Does this mean that my beloved ST:TNG will never exist now? … in that particular reality line? Whoa.

Okay. So on one hand side, all the nods and mentions and little references and all the… TRUE things that were in the script… on the ather hand side, this is, like, the furthest from feeling like “Star Trek”… ever. This leaves me with a bizarr queasy feeling in the stomach and the brain.

I agree that he was very good.

It was just odd to see the Chinese main role reprised by him while all the henchmen were proper Asians.

Oh, and “epicanthic”: wow there were a LOT of words and expressions in these episodes that I’d never heard or read before. Like… corks! Haha! Formidable. I want to watch them all over again and take notes. But I don’t have the time. Right now, anyway.

    The Talons of Weng-Chiang

Another Who story we’ve been able to watch, again thanks to Tanya and John ♥

That was quite good. I liked the big rats and the laser dragon and the time cabinet and the phantom of the opera chinese God and when the Doctor spoke of the 51st century (yay!) and some interesting and likable side-characters (the professor and Jago).

Odd though that they put so much make-up on a Caucasian to make him look like a Chinese man who can’t blink, instead of giving the part to a Chinese actor :x

The first parts were okay, but I thought it got better towards the end. Also, I didn’t like the Doctor at first, but liked him a little better in the end. But the way he talks to and about Leela made me cringe.

Vincent preferred this story over The Daleks, I think I liked The Daleks better, and also I definitely liked the first Doctor better (so far).

I also watched the documentary from the bonus disc and that was a real revelation, and kind of scary at the same time. Wow, the seventies seem a long time ago.

And miniatures were smaller then? :p

I mean, really. There has to be a technical reason why sometimes they look small and sometimes they look far away. … to do with the technical equipment or something. Is it the lense you use, is it the lighting, etc., and how does it work?

in reply to: Marleen’s NO SPOILERS Doctor Who Thread – Part III #98413
    TheLeen

    … so!

Thanks to Tanya & John being so awesome to send me DVDs, I have just watched:

    The Daleks

It’s difficult to even think of anything to write about it, because it was, you know, so very different from new Who; it was totally what I expected it to be like, and at the same time, not. So I won’t do the whole “I like/I don’t like” things – because the things I’d usually labelled “don’t like” amused me, and the other way round… or something.

All the characters are… weird. They switch between being totally amiable and total jerks. By the minute. Like, Ian and Barbara are such bores. Especially Ian. No wait, especially Barbara. But then I started to like Ian a bit. But then not. Argh!

From an “in-story” point of view, this was excellent. But it was a little difficult for me to keep the “in-story” perspective because things kept drawing my attention away. Things like the actors breaking off chunks of styrofoam rock in the cave and no one bothering. Or the actors casting shadows on the back wall of a hallway that was supposed to look infinetly long (and would have…) or Vincent saying “Ian, I want to go home” in his Barbara voice, or the Thals looking and talking like they came straight out of Flash Gordon. Or miniatures that looked like miniatures instead of a city. None of these are things I dislike, in fact I had a lot of with them, and not just for a cheap laugh, but they did distract me from the story a bit. But: the whole “oh, they don’t know the Daleks, oh, could the Doctor have made a difference back then, oh, if they knew what’s yet to come” gave us an additional thrill.

Awesome details: the Daleks. The Daleks being dalekky. The Daleks doing the nazi salute. The Doctor lying to the adults in order to get his chance to look at the city. The Daleks handing each other stuff with their acetabula.

Sadly, I couldn’t relate to the main characters much. The Doctor was good but remained distant. Susan didn’t do much for me, and her switching back and forth between being a whiny little girl and a carefree powergirl confused me. Barbara and Ian, well. I COULD relate to both the Thals and Daleks.

The episode(s) left Vincent and me discussing what happened with the Daleks. Did the Thal forget one or the other Dalek in the cellar? Did the Thal evolve into Daleks themselves? I suppose we’ll find out sooner or later…

So, does anyone think they can explain to me why the miniatures looked mini?

The Master generates a portal leading back into the Time War. He evilly offers The Doctor the chance to go back and stop himself from ending the Time War, therefore saving their people. The Doctor takes the chance and goes through, emerging on a space station orbiting Skaro. He spies on his 8th incarnation and Lucie Miller (as played by Sheridan Smith). Somehow he saves Lucie from the end he always thought she?d had (some bricks falling on her or something), he explains the situation to her and sends her back to the portal so she can avoid McGann?s Doctor. He watches McGann mourn Lucie and promise to himself that his next incarnation would take influence from her northern accent. Then The Rani appears and the long and short of it is that SHE was the one that was really responsible for wiping out the Time Lords. All the Doctor?s guilt over the War is suddenly lifted and the slate is clean for Matt Smith?s Doctor. Even though he can?t save the Time Lords he grabs The Rani and drags her through the portal back to 2010 Earth. She escapes with The Master, after she shoots Lucie. Now The Rani is BACK.

I’ve never seen Coronation Street (at least I don’t remember watching it) but on German daily soaps, characters often disappear for several weeks (or even months) in order to allow for the actors to do other stuff, or sometimes when the character just has nothing interesting to do for a while, as side characters are often used just to support some development for a major character. Even major characters “take turns” in providing the current story arc, while other major characters step back and aren’t really mentioned for a while. In character, they travel or something, or sometimes their absense isn’t even explicitely mentioned. It is so very, very common. Here.

Yeah. That picture really talks to me, too. It kind of says, “Norm wants YOU! … to hate all things dwarf except the bits where you see his head.”

    Tomorrow, innit.

    Bah @ you all.

I guess I’ll be watching recordings some time next week when I’m back in Berlin.

Chris, 49, who plays Rimmer said: ?The chemistry was still there. Once we were back together and in costume it was just a continuation of the norm.?

Oh please, no continuation of the Norm.

“I?m not bitter” is a quote worthy of being added to the creepy site header.

    Oh, that’s nice of you!

But you know, I’m really thinking about going for a few more days which would make travelling a lot easier (going via London for cheap, and stuff) so don’t worry for now!

I’m actually planning (loosely anyway) to go to London in late August already…

Hm hm hm. I didn’t go on proper holiday this year yet, maybe it would be smart to plan for some more time in the UK, if only to get to fly for cheap, and see some friends I haven’t seen in ages :) You too Si!

I’m sure it’s going to be epic and I’d certainly love to be there.

Incidentally, I will be in a country with neither Dave nor BBC on telly.

I don’t know. The website seems to like it as well. I’d already uploaded a new one, but this one miraculously re-appeared (during website downtime probably).

You will always think of a multiple of 9, and all multiples of 9 have the same symbol attached to them. Check the symbols next to 0, 9, 18, 27 etc…

This symbol is a different one each time you reload the page just to confuse you.

At least that’s how those things usually work
