I remember Richard Naylor saying in that twitter Q&A he did in April that he might know more soon so entirely possible conversations have taken place as to what could be next.

Also I’m sure that other thread posted about what Doug said on Twitter wasn’t showing up when I did so above, just in case it looks like I didn’t bother to check.

Not sure this is an update on anything (depends how much you want to read into it I guess) but fuck it. As a response on twitter to “Will there be any more Red Dwarf projects in the future?” Doug said “If I was a betting man I’d say: definitely, 100% yes and yes.” In reply to a follow up asking whether he just confirmed a new series he said, “No I just gave you my opinion if I was a betting man. It got the biggest numbers on UKTV in 7 years.”

Some responses of note from this:

-The documentaries will be coming “later in the year” & “It’s not been decided yet”
-There are no plans for this to be the last show they do and Doug hopes to see more feature length specials.
– This one is “It’s quite unlike anything we’ve done b4. The two live studio audiences laughed a lot. Posse on top form, great guest stars, space battles, pathos, explosions, 500 plus VFX shots. Wonderful score.”
– “There are sequences you couldn’t shoot with miniatures though so most is CG but #Axis the company we used with Howard Jones Supervisor have done a truly gob smacking job on our VFX budget”
– “It’s not RD 13. It’s Red Dwarf The Promised Land. CB is a bit superstitious and didn’t want to call it 13. So we called it RDTPL and as I’m sure you’re aware absolutely nothing has gone wrong since.”

– On the topic on the budget for it: “Dave wanted us to make a 90 minute special in a 120 minute slot with a bit more money. They thought it would lead us to making something different to anything we’d made b4. And they’ve turned out to be right.” [The movie that didn’t happen] “had a budget of £20 million. This is something completely new and fresh.” “It’s the same budget as Red Dwarf XII but instead of making 6 x 30 mins we’re making 90 minutes and the rest of the £ makes 3x 45 min docs. As a consequence @RichardDGNaylor figured our we could claim a tax credit for RDTPL so that has helped too.”
– On a possible commentary for DVD/BR: “I wanted to do one for free ( the DVD budget can afford free)with @RichardDGNaylor and we still might but the idea has gone up in smoke a bit due to CV. We might do one as a podcast”
– Bobby mask timings: “Definitely a lot more comfortable, and not so hot. Still roughly 2 hours to put on, 1 hour to take off. But massive improvement”

Certainly possible as Richard Naylor said on twitter when the special was announced that “There was an option to make two specials back to back but wanted to test the format first”. So you could certainly make the leap to think that if this goes well then there might be 2 or 3 more.

“Danny John-Jules says Red Dwarf is ‘waiting to get everyone signed up’. With the four leads having their own work commitments, including Danny’s one man show I’ve Got To Be Me, there’s a bit of jostling going on to bring everyone on board. But fans of the sci-fi show needn’t worry, the show is on track to return once the cast is locked in. Speaking to Metro.co.uk at the TV Choice Awards on Monday night, he said of the new series: ‘It’s gonna be funny. ‘We’re just waiting for the ink and the stamps to go down. ‘I’m doing my one-man show so I’m not really concentrating on Red Dwarf. I’m not in Cat mode because I can do that like a light switch.

‘Right now it’s about trying to get everybody signed up.’

He added that no one has seen a script or any potential ideas for new episodes yet, and asked if there is anything he would like to see happen to his character, Danny is fine just to go with the flow. The actor told us: ‘I never ask anybody to write anything. I never have in 31 years. I’ve never asked for more lines. ‘When my character was the smallest I never asked for a bigger part. So what does he think is the key to Red Dwarf’s ongoing success? Danny, 59, insisted: ‘The key is talent. Showbiz. That’s what we’re here for, so every single person should be on that road, otherwise why are we here? ‘The actors are all dedicated to their characters and that’s why it works. There’s not any magic. ‘You don’t see us all hanging out at the pub every week. Why do you not see photos of all the Red Dwarf cast together? We’ve been in the show 31 years. Because we’re all individuals.’ Hopefully those individuals can get their acts together to bring us another hilarious series.”

Plus Dave’s advert for moving channel where they got the model unit in and the blurb on their corporate website that says “It’s not just in front of the camera where the comic genius lies either, with a wealth of scripted treasure such as Sliced, Porters and the globally popular Red Dwarf” [2 shows that aired new episodes in the last 3 months and one that aired a year and a half ago] suggests they very much regard Dwarf as an active concern (I don’t see them promoting repeats of Top Gear or Zapped alongside all their new shows for instance).

Plenty of good comedians and comedy actors out there, they won’t be allowed anywhere near Comic Relief’s endless parade of light entertainment celebs making scripted jokes though.
Partridge and an unexpected appearance from Paul Putner in a skit were the only highlights. Always seems like a massively missed opportunity considering the names it can attract to do something like a one off Taskmaster featuring people who’d never sign up for it normally.
