Backwards has a superb ending, I always think that was part of the reason it got bumped up to episode 1.

I loved the VHS video designs when I was a sbool boy and created my own versions. This would have been 1992 when only III, IV and II were available.

I lapped up those DVD updates and I also bought the series 1 DVD before I had a player. It’s so weird I didn’t know about G&T until 2009 despite really enjoying TM:YNYN. Depending on what the extras are I may have to buy the Blu Ray despite not having a player.

I think Epideme is an excellent episode and the line about coat hangers is a great Cat gag.

Ten years ago the show was dead, thanks to Dave there are 21 new episodes which hold up very well to the previous 52. I was pumped for Back To Earth, X and XI (which was bigger, better and smeggier for at least half the episodes) and by the time of XII I settled down and just enjoyed (mostly) six new episodes. Mr Rat made me giggle for a week. I still get a laugh out of ‘sometimes they sleep with me’ followed by ‘mmmmmmmmm!’

I should have got the Lee and Herring one because I live their radio one shows. That is pretty obscure though.

The elbow titting picture was intriguing when I first saw it in the Red Dwarf companion. I must have been waiting for Rimmer to wear that jacket and point his finger out when series 1 was finally released the following year.

One of my hobbies is listening to Dwarf Casts and in the Skipper instant reaction episode Jo mentioned that Hattie should have been in the background of the Mr Rat scene. That would have been so perfect and I’m annoyed it didn’t happen.

To be fair BBC video did a great job of making it seem like the title was always there. Red Dwarf II Byte 2 was my first VHS because my off air series 2 was missing Parallel Universe.

You want the moon omelette on a stick.

The alligator landed on top of one of the many sheds and was precariously on the edge for two minutes until it finally fell off on to the nasty old Germans.

I see the audio versions of both novels as the better options. Both books benefit from a hefty edit – although the DNA section of Last Human should have been snipped and there’s still time for Chris Barrie to record them properly.

When I first saw that deleted scene (and the original ending to Only The Good…) I was pissed off that it wasn’t in the broadcast show, I think the scenes as broadcast do fit better tonally with the rest of VIII though.

The original version of Bodyswap was sweetened because the toffee crisp deserved a bigger laugh and the remastered version is a closer representation of the genuine reaction. That’s how I’ve always seen it anyway.

I liked Live on Earth when I was 15 and to be honest, I still think it’s pretty good (especially now it’s free on YouTube. I saw the Sickbag VHS at HMV in 2000 and just thought ‘nah…’. I’ve now watched it 18 short years later. Doesn’t do much for me in general but I like the gag about men being changed as often as nappies.

in reply to: When did you first read the novels? #228753

I got the first two novels for my 12th birthday in 1992. I’d seen series 2, III, IV and V. Series I was extremely rare and I used to freeze frame the scene in the hologram simulation suite to try and see at least a bit of it.

Anyway, I loved the whole of the first book but especially the Future Echoes section and I freaked myself out by imagining another version of myself walking in to the room like in the double Rimmer scene. When I finally saw series I the following year I generally loved the look of it but it bugged me that the stars from the sleeping quarters window were static when the ship was supposed to be traveling at light speed.

Fave bit of the second book was Garbage World but now I appreciate how amazing the Better Than Life section is. It could almost be a Black Mirror/Inside No 9.

Third book was long awaited (I got it for my 15th birthday) and at the time I wasn’t impressed although I like it now. Backwards passed me by a bit as by then we knew that series VII was being made which was a far more exciting prospect. When I got around to reading it I adored the Dimension Jump adaptation. I much prefer the abridged versions of Backwards and Last Human. Makes them tighter imo

I was there and remember it well. I was 11 and hadn’t seen The Young Ones so the Nigel Planer thing wouldn’t have appealed to me, but I had seen series 1 of Harry Enfield (Dr Doolittle was mah favourite sketch) and taped all of series 2 (to this day I call Saturday Jaturday because of the Chomonoly Warner football sketch). My friend had Red Dwarf III Byte One and partially inspired by this advert I rushed out and bought Red Dwarf II Byte Two mostly because Parallel Universe had been missing from a series 2 off air I had borrowed from another school chum.

I spotted Lister walking off the edge of the set when he sits down with his curry and you can see a monitor when he breaks the guitar in half. This is more to do with how much I watched every frame in worrying detail as a sbool boy.

VI was the first series that I got hyped about for over a year, devouring every bit of info I could from the smegazines, fan club magazine and of course Primordial Soup. For me it doesn’t hit the high mark of 2 & V, but it is the most excited I ever was on first broadcast.

The three points in my life I’ve loved Red Dwarf most have been series 2, V and BTE. I loved Back To Earth so much that I re-joined the fan club, started posting on G&T and went to my first Dimension Jump since 1998.

This was an amazing and much anticipated release back in 2007. I cracked open the cider and gloried in the three main documentaries and then watched Bodysnatcher and all the commentaries over the next few days. Great days they were, great days. It definitely felt like the end as well – surely there was no where to go after this? So amazing to finally see Bobby’s first day having read about it 15 years earlier.

I would recommend the audiobooks on audible as a great way to revisit the novels. Last Human and Backwards are on YouTube in abridged form. They probably shouldn’t be there but they are. I feel they are better in abridged form same as I prefer the fan edits of Back In The Red and Only The Good…

Fan perception of Dave-era Red Dwarf is a curious thing, makes one man weep and another one sing.

I love Krysis and Mechocracy above anything in X but I love the way X hangs together more than XI & XII. I think the show presents itself as it did in the early 90s and for me it’s that version of the show we’re seeing now. I’m sure I’ll cram in a complete re-watch of the Dave-era before the Pearl Poll. It has highs and lows but it’s unmissable and there is much to love.

Sean’s Show was right there at the start amongst all the other delightfully strange comedies on channel 4 and BBC 2. His RHLSTP was very engaging and I’ve been meaning to catch up on his later stand up stuff. But yes he always spoke to me and lots of other slightly isolated and warped people. He could do silly stuff well too and I think the first episode of series 2 of Sean’s Show is worth a look to see all these elements in full swing as well as an early TV appearance of Pulp at the end.
